I thought Brooks would jump on the UVA job. If the reports are true that
UVA offered him in the first place, and then offered him two-thirds of what he is currently making, I can understand it though. His ego would not have allowed him to do that. And most everyone elseโs ego would not either.

I loved Bonnie. My kids went to her camps. Really good era but I donโt
remember any final fours. I guess I could have said relevant again in fairness to your point.

Six out in the portal, zero in as of now. If we want to be hyperbolic as
of this moment, we only have five โplayersโ still here and that is fluid. When the next guy portals out, we wonโt be able to put five on the floor.

Whether you like him or not Brooks made VT womenโs basketball relevant. He
took the program to unprecedented heights. He recruited at levels our program was not known for. He made the job attractive to a coach like Megan Duffy after he left. If he leaves Kentucky to go to UVA (very possible in my mind), he has already recharged that program that program. The guy has not moved around that much, imo, and if he comes back to Virginia (UVA) he will retire there and be a pain in our posterior. I donโt particularly like him but I do respect the coaching job that he does wherever he goes. He is a great recruiter-full stop.

I donโt know. Good question 34. Questions like that are the premise of my
post. The more information given to the fans about post season decisions for not playing the less disappointment or upset.

Iโm just an investor in VT sports trying to learn more about how decisions
regarding my money are made. Iโm not a big investor but Iโm a longtime investor who has spent a lot of extra money going to bowls and post season basketball tournaments. Without accountability, the dead horses are going to be the investors.

I agree with you. I posted much the same yestetday. Very close to Wahoo
great Cory Alexander too. And he is not a young guy. If they want him it may be his only chance to get back home. We would have to prepare to see some former Hokies in Hoo gear maybe.

Serious question. Did they vote to play? Or did they just play? Or were
they told to play? I know they had a new coach in Pearl junior but they had to be disappointed not to make the NCAA. But they played in the NIT and won it. Thereโs something to be said for that.

How in the world can Tech hold on to Ball next year? The money that will be
offered will be impossible to match, right? I guess we knew when we got him to come here if he blossomed he would probably play somewhere else the next two years.

If the second baseman reads the third base runner on the way to the cut
spot she (the second baseman) can determine whether to cut or let the throw go through. Same as you mentioned but not predetermined. A good college team should be able to run that play effectively. I have used that play intermittently in travel and high school over the years depending on the skill level of the team. And I got that play from a guy who taught CST quite a lot.

Donโt discount this possibility. He left the area for well chronicled
reasons. He is from Waynesboro. Very close to former UVA menโs player Cory Alexander. Heโs not a spring chicken. Family is in that area. Be ready to some former Hokies in Hoos gear if it does take place.

Brooks is from Waynesboro. Heโs not getting any younger. I would not
discount the possibility if UVA pursues him.

I donโt ever see Mazz as a closer. Has the velocity but throws too many
pitches. A little too erratic as well. Carrico is around the plate and can pitch up and down and has a great change up. Keep hitters off balance and her defenders on their toes.

I donโt think anyone ever suggested she canโt be a starter. Pete has used
her perfectly in my opinion. No one else on this staff can close, or pitch long relief in a key game, like Bree can. The way she has been used is why we have won so many games. Sure she can start but I like her affecting many game instead of a few. That being said, I would consider starting her tomorrow or quick hooking Mazz and bringing her in early, if necessary.

Logic tells me that you are right on Hammond, Hansberry, and Johnson. Logic
also tells me that the gap between what we offered (or could pay) Gurdak was big, given the deep ties with Coach Young. He was definitely a want, Iโm sure. Number 4 on our list. Schutt was on my list, possibly number 5 but likely number 6 on the coaches list. I would love to have kept him but he probably wanted market value and we likely wanted to pay him at a level he had performed at. It is easy to say letโs get lower level stars that we can afford when the blue bloods can offer them more money to be 7-10 on their roster. We can obviously offer them big playing time, and even a chance to start. Lastly, no matter what our budget is I see this as a transition and return to fundamental basketball. We likely wonโt pay for shiny objects this year. Kids who jump higher than anyone has ever seen and kids who can make stunning no look passes. We can just get some kids who can dribble, pass, shoot, and play defense. Itโs going to be tough but all is not lost.

Yep. Since when is 19 wins a bad season for VT basketball? I know it was
very disappointing not making the NCAA, but there has to be something between being awful and making NCAA. Especially when you donโt have a strong historical basketball resume. Especially when the money is not sufficient to be a big dog. When you canโt win it all, you wrestle back and finish as high as you can. Thats the way it used to be. Back when fans and donorโs had a voice.

A positive perspective on this situation would likely be the following. Our
staff probably thought that with an eight run lead, and only five outs to get, they could put some struggling or unproven arms in there to close it out. That would theoretically save more good arms for the (likely) rubber match on Sunday. By using Swift we now likely wonโt have him for the deciding game. To say ZERO arms is a bit hyperbolic, imo, but we obviously donโt have enough good, consistent, reliable arms for all roles. Lazaro has been coming on and he was a lefty on lefty situational match up attempt. Grim is our highly touted freshman who was a surprise weekend starter who was recently injured and is working back into form. None of these guys are zeros but they were not good yesterday.

Relationship with JMU coach who went to Vandy. Nickelโs high school, East
Rockingham, is in the Harrisonburg area. The prior relationship and money, Iโm sure.

Iโll go along with you. Itโs a frustrating time right now but you have a
good chance of being right if some pitchers get healthy- and quit giving up so many dingers.

Since (regular) donors donโt get consulted on matters like this it makes
being a (normal) donor less enjoyable.

If you look in MLB that is not necessarily true. And Blacksburg is no
pitching Mecca. I would take what we had over what is happening now.

And there are two real issues that come with control problems. Your defense
is often on their heels or disengaged. The other is the worst. You put a runner on base without having a chance to make a play. I would be interested in seeing our defensive numbers when each pitcher pitches. Pitchers obviously pitch less innings than they are capable of when they throw too many pitches per inning/game.

When you can afford to poach the leading scorers off of at least three
teams and get two of the better Europeans, plus an elite shot blocker, youโre going to win pretty big. Odom has done a great job but donโt down play the dollars spent.

To me, it depends on who is batting. Also, the opportunity to put someone
on first base had been there since the leadoff double. Bree retired the first two with no advance so Iโm sure Pete said go get the third girl. I had just commented to my wife, donโt give her anything to hit because if she walks she sets up a force at any base. The only runner that means anything is on second.

Tech baseball should be an NCAA lock then. Just play good teams. You donโt
have to beat any of them.

You left out the injuries. Johnson playing in all the ACC contests would
have been a great antidote for underachieving. Your points are valid but we are a bottom third of the league funded program, allegedly. We donโt/didnโt have layered depth.
Men's Basketball Board

Food for thought. When we are purportedly in the bottom third of dollars
spent in the ACC procuring talent for our roster, we cannot โaffordโ to pay one of our better players to sit out injured. When Johnson, clearly our best and most versatile defense player was unable to play, we lost 3-4 games we likely would have won. Outside of Hammond or Hansberry, Johnson was the one guy we could not lose. Everyone has injuries, but at least two thirds of our league has layered depth- aka Duke, UNC, Louisville, UVA. Then last night, we play without Hansberry. In my view it is hard to judge this season without considering that our team seldom had the โbest teamโ on the floor. Think a healthy Hansberry makes a difference last night? It is almost inconceivable that we have this happen year after year, but this year in particular. Even now, healthy, we have an NCAA team. But they donโt get to play.

Losing Johnson cost us games- on paper. Those big guards who went off on
us didnโt have to face him. That was the loss that really mattered. And some threes and fours that he frequently guarded, too, didnโt face him.
