Schutt will be a $750k-$1M player, he has proven production
Being the 7-8th guy off the bench for a UNC or an Illinois is a perfect role for him, he’s got to maximize his earnings now. Contenders are spending $15-$20M on rosters next year, the minimum to get an at large bid is likely $7-$10M assuming a 33% increase in the cap that has been the rumor. We can afford maybe 1 or 2 tournament quality starters, the rest of the roster is going to have to be unproven guys. Whether they come from mid majors or high school doesn’t matter, neither will be able to learn MYs system fast enough

For $750 we can get three good engineering professors

Can shoot most of the time and defend only sometime. Not a loss, IMO.

Wish him the best. Hope he goes to a good team.

Sounds like Hammond Hansberry and Johnson is where the money went
Which is a good thing because I feel that everyone else that had hit the portal is replaceable I would go get 2 true bigs, one that can start and one that can bring quality mins off bench since it seems Dorn may be gone. This will allow Hansberry to play is true position at the 4 Then I would go and get a guard who can fill up the scoreboard maybe someone who averaged 18 at somewhere like Valparaiso Then just fill it out from there and hope for the best. System players are a must no people like pasha who couldent fit in the system and try to take it to the rack himself

Lmao best of luck getting anyone close to a proven big or mid major scorer
Might be able to find an undersized big from a low major and a guard who can shoot. I would expect Hammond, Hansberry, and Johnson to take up about 65-70% of our budget. Hammond and Hansberry alone are worth atleast $3M on the open market

We can't afford someone who scored 18 at Valpo, maybe 8?

What are the "system players" in this context?

Wouldn't be so sure, portal has over 2 weeks before closing
The chances of at least one of those three still jumping IMO are at least 50 / 50, probably higher. Hell I wouldnt be totally shocked if all 3 bolted....that's the world we live in.

LOL Good one. Contracts with players and/ or agents will be ASAP
next week. I realize blueblood players have occasionally left one school for another, but in this case, these are not top 75 players and switching for another possible offer in the VT case is unlikely.

Glad I could make you laugh
You gonna still be on the board if one of the remaining 3 go into the portal?

Yeah those 3 are the heart and soul of the team
Schutt can take his on/off game to greener pastures.

Logic tells me that you are right on Hammond, Hansberry, and Johnson. Logic
also tells me that the gap between what we offered (or could pay) Gurdak was big, given the deep ties with Coach Young. He was definitely a want, I’m sure. Number 4 on our list. Schutt was on my list, possibly number 5 but likely number 6 on the coaches list. I would love to have kept him but he probably wanted market value and we likely wanted to pay him at a level he had performed at. It is easy to say let’s get lower level stars that we can afford when the blue bloods can offer them more money to be 7-10 on their roster. We can obviously offer them big playing time, and even a chance to start. Lastly, no matter what our budget is I see this as a transition and return to fundamental basketball. We likely won’t pay for shiny objects this year. Kids who jump higher than anyone has ever seen and kids who can make stunning no look passes. We can just get some kids who can dribble, pass, shoot, and play defense. It’s going to be tough but all is not lost.

I'm hoping the infusion of cash that men's basketball was supposed to get
this year shows up in 2027-28. With the increase in the Ath. Dept funding, WB shouldn't be able to poor mouth VT men's hoops again. But of course if that azzclown is still around, who knows what he may pull!

Spoiler alert: You haven't a clue what will happen 12 months from now.
I'm sure you're still believing it won't, and maybe that happens. You have no knowledge that it won't so don't pretend NIL is written in concrete for 2027-28!! If it doesn't, I'll fess up that I was too optimistic, but I'll wait until next Spring to see what has happens financially.

this is optimistic - I doubt we can just take money that
Gurdak or Schutt turned down and use it to get someone that will be an improvement. Maybe we get lucky and pull a few diamonds in the rough, but I would not bet money on it.

Remember, Neo's bucks there now too. Of course, I'm sure a lot
of that went to "The Three Amigos".

Gurdak and Schutt combined 12.5 pts and 5 RBs / game
I like them but they are definitely replaceable … hopefully a small upgrade …. Especially on defense ✌️

What are you going......
to go get them with? Can you really expect to add equal or better talent with less money. I agree football is the priority but, what has been done to the hoops program in the last few years borders on gross negligence.

My question is, why does a HC who financially, doesn't need a
paycheck, put up with this crap from WB? Are his competitive fires that strong?

I think @saret......
nailed it with his first two sentences. The VT job has never been about a paycheck for CMY. It was about home, family and a belief he could help restore a program that provided him fond memories of his younger days. Moreover, the guy is not a quitter or a whiner, even with a few cracks seen this year. He sets his jaw and goes back to work and the more adversity the harder he works, at least that is my perspective of him. His dad, his uncle Norman and so on provided the family DNA. When he leaves VT, for whatever reason, I will be comfortable he gave VT everything he had. That does not mean he never made a mistake but, mistakes were not due to a lack of effort. I do not believe some of the people paid to support him could make a similar claim.

Yeah, I think they do. He's back where he was born, his
Mom still lives in Radford, and he's been fairly consistent that this is his dream job. The year before this last one, when we were woefully bereft of talent, there was consistent reporting that he raised hell behind closed doors (yelling and scheming). But, he never bad mouthed Whit then, and he had every right too. I'm of the opinion CMY is very old school. He'll never publicly out Whit, nor will he bad mouth his players publicly. That, to me, is very old school. He did more with less at Wofford., So, he pragmatically looks at his situation, and just tries to do the best he can with the hand he is dealt. I'll go a step further than @2hhoop3 , supra. What Whit has done to the MBB program borders on being criminal. Whit just has to go. He cares nothing about the fans (i.e., Wisconsin FB game, MBB not playing in NIT, forcing Beamer out before the game in Bristol, etc.), and obviously never will. His fiduciary acumen is non-existent, and in fact, he's a fool. He can't leave too soon.

Even then, we finished a fairly respectable 8-12 in the ACC.
When Young was hired, I believe Coach K said, "He won't finish last." I still marvel at what he and his staff pulled off his first season here, putting a respectable product on the floor, in a short amount of time. That was the worst ACC finish, 7-13, after a 5-3 start in league play. In fact, an overall start of 14-5 got hopes sky high, before it came crashing down. Still, a winning Regular Season at 16-15, a greater accomplishment than many remember, considering everything.

But Sands doesn't give a bowel movement about any of that.
He will do nothing while he's still President. That fool can't leave soon enough.

The only way Whit leaves before Sands leaves is if the BoV forces Sands ...
