Flugar reporting SEC is moving in on inviting UVA, Flugar is saying this

UVA gets an invite to a P2. Definitely not the BIG, but do you think they are worth a pro rata to the SEC? I'm having real difficulty seeing the football value, media numbers, or the brand. There will be some that will argue the market" or number of people living in VA, but I think it's just plain hogwash, and this post is worse than B12 podcaster click bait.

I'm not saying they won't eventually go P2, but I can say with 100% certainty they're not going while VT gets left behind.
The nightmare scenario for everyone on this board, and what you see posted most often, whether it's presented as opinion or fact, is some variation of, "UVA is a way more valuable brand to the SEC and the Big 10 than VT, and they're going to get an invite to one or the other, while VT likely won't." This is an absolutely laughable statement to anyone with a brain, because it flies directly in the face of any and all available evidence and history regarding both UVA as an institution and its culture, and the factors that are driving the current wave of conference realignment. I always say that if you see someone seriously proffering the notion that UVA will go P2 to the exclusion of VT, you can just assume they have zero idea what they're talking about when it comes to conference realignment and ignore whatever they have to say on the topic.
It doesn't surprise me that someone like Greg Flugaur, who was astute enough once to predict something correctly about conference realignment, but is now obviously just making things up so people will watch his monetized 2.5 hour long YouTube videos that contain around 3 minutes of actual content, would opine that UVA is going to the SEC. He's from Minnesota. He knows absolutely nothing about UVA, or Virginia Tech, or the athletics programs at either, or the size, makeup, and institutional culture of either institution. He's like the ESPN and NYT/The Athletic pencil necks who just look at UVA and say, "oh, they don't have a "state" or a "tech" after "Virginia" in their institutional title, that means they're the big flagship school in Virginia, just like Florida, or Tennessee, or Alabama, or Georgia, and that means they're going P2." Which couldn't be farther from reality. It insults the intelligence for anyone with any knowledge and insight.

the P2 selection criteria is close to what you think it will be. I am not sure football and especially past/current status of the football programs is as much of a driving force as you do.
To me if football is the real driver, then only ND really adds value enough to offer them. Honestly, does big time college football really need any ACC or B12 team for football? They really don't.
Seems there is something elso going on as the P2 closes out numbers. Maybe the real question on VT/ UVA is vs the biggies of the SEC. Which can be the better carrier of all 3 money sports, not to compete with but to promote those SEC biggies in this state. Same with UNC. Kind of like Bama, LSU, UGA become the home teams of VA and NC.

is "the SEC will add UVA and VT will be left out of the P2 because football doesn't matter as much as you think it does, and UVA is really good at Tennis, Soccer, and Lacrosse."

It’s the exact reason why uva is being consider more prominently than VT -
The reality that no one discusses in conference alignment is the added benefit of uva/unc/vt/Duke to name a few isn’t going to come from whatever football brand moves with it at that time.
The TV contracts are not going to increase because it is now VT vs Vandy or UVA versus Vandy. Same for Alabama versus uva or vt. That first game against the name brand will be fun - then not so fun looking at the 60-0 scoreboard - for both uva/vt. The money in these contracts is for THE games of the conferences. Bama v Georgia. Texas v Bama. Michigan v OSU. Penn state v Oregon etc. You think VT v Arkansas is going to be pay per view worthy? Same for UVA v SCAR. That’s where’s it is headed is pay per view games.
Despite the interest difference in football programs at uva and vt - (and sorry to burst your bubble that is now the only effectual difference between the programs today.) whatever revenue tech football would bring is marginal to overall income! Whatever revenue uva football would bring is marginal to overall income!
You are not expanding for the best football teams anymore - the best are already there. FSU/Clemson/Miami is clearly on the outside looking in - they are the top of the second tier now because revenues will continue to distance ability. AND it makes sense for the sec specifically not to add brands that hurt their best brands (Texas, Georgia, Bama). That’s why I continue to think that B10 will want FSU/Clemson/Miami more than SEC.
We all can obviously debate WHY the next round of expansion will happen. we can say it will be football based or creating the best holistic value for the conference etc etc etc. there’s so many different ways you can convince yourself one school is worthy over another, etc.
But I think at this point it is rather clear this just isn’t a pure football (and potential football revenue) decision because otherwise Clemson/Miami/FSU would comprise the last spots and unc/uva/vt/ncsu/others would be out of convo.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but yes the fact that UVA’s athletic department as a whole is well ahead of VT will matter, even if you don’t want to accept it. Will uva leave and tech gets stuck? Maybe - who the hell knows.

telling us it is the games which would imply maybe nobody, aside from ND, moves that needle. Then you turn right around and try to argue that UVA's athletic department as a whole will be the reason. However, you did do a great job pointing up that only the parties directly involved have any idea what might really drive the process. Looks like your own little bubble may burst as well.
(In response to this post by wahoo2023)

It already is.
Many on this post are trying to argue that it’s insane to think that uva is getting consideration because it’s a top 10 athletic department annually and it has a 3-9 football team.
It’s very funny to watch bc these reports about uva to the big 10 and the sec keep tricking out over the months and years. But it’s not possible uva can be considered!
Also no bubble to burst of my own here, if uva moves, it’s because of overall department performance. Not calling it will happen - but it’s pretty indisputable that would be the reason why at this point. Don’t think you have to really think that deep to see that.
(In response to this post by 2hhoop3)
1y
Which again, not hard to see uva is considered for the athletic department….
The only inference is the next round of moves will not be ENTIRELY a football decision.
You tell me who that stands to benefit between uva/vt.

In no way am I saying that if there is one more P2 spot and it is between VT and UVA that UVA would get that spot. And that is what your response is trying to reduce the issue to. IMHO the issue is much bigger than that.
The primary thing goes back to the simple idea that only ND brings enough return add to the P2 for football. They don't need FSU, Miami or Clemson for football. and, that being correct, then they certainly don't need UVA or VT. So again, IMHO anyone added has to have football + something and your position ignores the + something. Yes that COULD even go so far as to say the SEC academic side wants AAU schools and since it really does not matter athletically, why not? Again, the SEC does not need more prime time matchups. And even in football, the SEC evaluations may not be with current or recent history of wins, fan attendance and TV viewership. It could be what school the SEC biggies think can benefit them the best. Ask yourself, from a Bama, LSU, Tenn, UGA position, does an easy win in Lane North win more fans to the SEC biggies than a tough game in the real Lane? I am pretty sure the current heavywieghts in the SEC have no interest in growing the FSU, Clemson or Miami fan bases or programs.
Your response also seems to assume there is some fair and honest standard with that standard being a combo of wins, fan attendance, Tv viewership and maybe even message board traffic that will determine who gets in and who doesn't no matter the name of the school. I do not believe that will be the case. and yes. it COULD be that even for the SEC, AAU membership may trump football in any one instance.
(In response to this post by Baltimore_Hokie)
1y
There is no circumstance where that will happen. Could both get left behind, for the reasons stated in your post? Sure, yeah. But that's not what I said, so I'm not arguing with you about that.
Your question presented - "would the SEC rather have another difficult game on its programs' schedules, or an easy cupcake win that nobody will watch?" is a no brainer for anyone that has paid even one iota of attention to anything that's happened with conference realignment in the last 4 years - they would rather have another big time game they can sell to the networks. I have no idea why you even consider that a question to ponder. Are you, for some reason, under the impression that the then-current "heavyweights in the SEC" had no interest in growing the Texas and Oklahoma fan bases or programs when they were poached from the Big 12?
Any and everything that I have ever posted about conference realignment are inherently based around the same core analytical point - the primary factors driving expansion by the SEC and Big 10 are no longer media markets and imposed carriage fees - Rutgers and Maryland would not have been expansion targets in 2021 - the primary factors driving P2 realignment now are football brand and viewership - will this addition allow for more big football match-ups we can sell media networks on a week-to-week basis.
Not even UVA students and alumni care enough to watch UVA football games. They are not an expansion candidate, and certainly not to the exclusion of VT. They may both ultimately be left behind for a myriad of reasons, some of which you have pointed out in your post, but UVA is not getting called up to the big show while VT gets left out. That was the point I made, and it's correct. If you (or anyone else, including any TV or print sports journalist, national or local) want to argue against that point, then you're wrong. Sorry.
(In response to this post by VTCALS72)

That’s what is currently being missed in this conversation I think in conference realignment.
The arms race in football is done. The best brands are already in two conferences and all the money will come from those brands alone.
Other ND, no addition truly moved the needle. Maybe Florida State.
But adding Florida state doesn’t add another $100m to bottom line.
To me the direction in conference realignment for the next round isn’t just for football maximization. I think it is more creating the best athletic conference, and if you think that, it’s easy to see why uva/unc would be brought up (if the report is true). The arms race for football - That’s already been done. And if it is the reason for the next round then Miami/ND/FSU/Clemson will be the movers only. 2 to Big10, 2 to SEC.
I also think the viewership/tv market thing is overstated. Sure more eyes is more dollars but I think it is marginal. The market is already cornered. Everyone watches the big games everywhere. Think expanding into “new markets” is a superficial game of capture the flag. Of the course SEC/Big10 wants the Virginia/DC market. But a ton of people already watch/spend on those conferences in the state already. A ton of vt/uva fans already consume SEC/Big10 football. So there isn’t a ton to gain by getting Virginia/DC the way everyone thinks there is. Think the movers and shakers see that.

happened thus or any of the available record regarding the recent round of conference realignment, meaning what has transpired since Oklahoma and Texas announced they were leaving the Big 12 for the SEC.
Excluding football, which is extremely lucrative and drives massive viewership, college athletics, including everything about men's basketball except the NCAAT at this point, is an entirely niche product. College basketball has not driven conference realignment for anyone except the Big East Conference since the 1980s, and everything else - women's basketball, baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer, etc., etc., etc. is even more niche, exponentially so. It is also entirely apparent that academics and AAU membership are afterthoughts as well.
At the end of the day, the same thing that has always driven conference realignment is still driving it now - MONEY. The only thing that changes is where that money is coming from. It used to be cable markets and carriage fees. The lost drops of juice are currently being squeezed out of that lemon. Now it's about compelling content, meaning big football programs playing other big football programs that will generate massive numbers - more or less bowl games played on a weekly basis. You can argue that VT is outside that bubble, but if VT is outside it, UVA is also outside it, and about a mile beyond where VT is sitting.
The next round of conference realignment may be entirely about something else, but that's what this around is about, that's my point, and it's 100% correct.

You make the assumption that the people making these decisions have brains.
Most of these pukes have been born on third base and brag that they fit a triple. They think academic prestige will pay the bills somehow. And somehow, they are in position to destroy the sport or at least destroy many quality athletic departments who are subject to their foolish decisions.

Ohio in the MAC, but I get your point.
As a fan in flyover, VT in the SEC is a no brainer. Right football, right stadium, and the right fan base.
UVA, as a football program is a joke. The basketball program had a few good runs, and has played in the historically good ACC, but by no means do they rise to the level of UNC and Duke. They are not P2 stock in athletics in any way shape or form, and except for a couple of basketball runs, I put them in the same category as Wake Forest.
In addition, I have known a few UVA fans, and they think their athletics is second to none, and their sht doesn't stink. (no subjectivity in this at all).

People tend to look at the University of Virginia and think it's a 1:1 with, say, the University of Georgia, to cite an SEC school, or the University of Michigan, to cite a Big 10 school.
UVA is a lot closer in enrollment size, institutional culture, demographic/socioeconomic makeup, and physical appearance to Duke than it is Georgia or Michigan, or even Virginia Tech. If you live here, in Virginia, and know anything about UVA, you understand this. If you're some jug hooter from Minnesota who has never set foot in Charlottesville and thinks the entire state of Virginia is like Alexandria, and is trying to hustle money by making things up for clickbait-y YouTube videos, you have no idea this is the case.

Not necessarily sports-wise, but in projecting the image it wants to portray of itself onto the public consciousness. I’d like to know the approximate distance my eyes have rolled while listening to people from the northeastern sea board talk about how they would have gone to Harvard or Yale, but UVA was such a better value, and, honestly, they think they got an even better education and opportunities at UVA. It’s all PR talking points straight out of UVA’s MarComm department.

it's Notre Dame and no one else. The BIG wanted UVA and UNC to come with Maryland when they left, but the money difference wasn't there at the time and they decided to stay with the ACC. Do you see the SEC allowing the BIG to come into their regional territory (that they currently have no presence in) without a fight? Future expansion may or may not occur, but it will not be driven by football value.

outbid the ESPN. CBS used to have SEC content until they were out bid by ESPN.
The SEC is not ESPN's property as many think. They have first right of refusal, but the SEC contract has an end date. It is entirely possible that others bid on the SEC content. The networks are a different monster, but even they do not guarantee FOX or ESPN owning all of the content of the BIG or SEC.
ESPN will not make "defensive" moves any more than the SEC will. They will make the moves that make them the most money.
(In response to this post by MrFantastic!)

for any conference. The cable model is diminishing, so the market becomes less of a factor now, and moving forward.
I do not subscribe to the SEC diluting for any sort of a "defensive" move. If the BIG wants GT for example, the SEC will not dilute to stop them - not a chance. That being said, there may be 5-10 schools in the country that might be worth a pro rata for the SEC, or even the BIG. Do not forget the Arizona schools, as they bring a pretty large market with them. Utah and KU bring a few things to the table as well. TT is a classic SEC type of school, but not sure they move the Texas needle enough, and the same could be said of Oklahoma state.
The ACC schools of course have been discussed on this board, and the top 4 plus ND are probably even better additions than the B12 schools listed. I just don't see UVA making the cut - they do nothing in football, and do not have the national brand like UNC.
(In response to this post by manassashoo)
1y
I do not see them having the sway to get an invite for UVA or NCSU. UNC's brand may be worth a pro rata, but the later are dilutive any way you slice that pie. (just my opinion).

If VT, Clemson, State and FSU get AAU. Not sure status of any. SEC getting UVA and UNC will not happen right now. It will take time. Yes, more chatter will get tossed around. From bigger social media types. I actually see FSU and Clemson as the dynamics here. I am not sure where they are headed. I wonder also whom VT has cozied up with? Or being VT have we set on our way behind reactive asses(i think not but)? In the end, and it is if acc loses out, I see a southern branch of the BIG forming. Why? I just can't see snots of UNC desiring bball competition where athletes galore exist.
ACC? What is their card left? If any.?

Thing works out will be the catalyst in my opinion.
If basketball is put at a premium, UNC and UVU might be content.

for the administration of the sitting POTUS, via the acquiescence of a sitting state governor, to demand the resignation of a state university president under threat of withholding federal funding to the university. I think also notable in this case are the very existence but certainly the actions of the Jefferson Council (feel free to do your own research there) in the resignation.
Ryan's resignation and the circumstances that lead to it were not a "business as usual" case study by any stretch of the imagination. If the pendulum swings the other way in November, and, no editorialization being intended here whatsoever, history tells us that it almost always does in the Commonwealth, then I think there are going to be some powerful people moving into Richmond offices who will be out for scalps.

I think aside from Sankey and ESPN and maybe a select few SEC AD'S and President's anyone else is just offering and opinion and we would likely be smart to consider it just that. It will be interesting to see how things go in VA and NC as taking one rather than both likely sets up a SEC/B1G head to head before all is said and done. There is more daylight between UNC/NCSU than UVa/VT but, both those rivalries would make an interesting head to head between the SEC and BIG.

I listened to the live show so you don't have to 😆. Here is a summary.
Flugs said he had contact with BTM (his source inside the Big Ten); and the source said the SEC was turning up its efforts to get UVa in the context of the UVa president resigning and some board members' terms being up. The thought is that the newer people coming in will be more pro-SEC than those leaving.
Flugs then added that he didn't think this was imminent, but it would take some time.

to influence their choice in president in order to affect a culture change that would make them more palatable? Is the CIA involved by chance. 🤣

Virginia or is this a condition placed on the SEC by UNC? A lot of moving parts to see how all this shakes out.

They can wait 5 years and it is considerably less. He’s predicting this because the UVA President resigned over pretty much nothing to do with College Sports as far as I can see. So if UVA hires someone from Harvard, what will he say? In the meantime, he is getting clicks over Ryan’s departure.

at least for me. He likes to draw things out, I guess to create more drama, but I bet his listeners would go up if he wasn’t so long winded.
