Except if the decision is not entirely football based.

That’s what is currently being missed in this conversation I think in conference realignment. The arms race in football is done. The best brands are already in two conferences and all the money will come from those brands alone. Other ND, no addition truly moved the needle. Maybe Florida State. But adding Florida state doesn’t add another $100m to bottom line. To me the direction in conference realignment for the next round isn’t just for football maximization. I think it is more creating the best athletic conference, and if you think that, it’s easy to see why uva/unc would be brought up (if the report is true). The arms race for football - That’s already been done. And if it is the reason for the next round then Miami/ND/FSU/Clemson will be the movers only. 2 to Big10, 2 to SEC. I also think the viewership/tv market thing is overstated. Sure more eyes is more dollars but I think it is marginal. The market is already cornered. Everyone watches the big games everywhere. Think expanding into “new markets” is a superficial game of capture the flag. Of the course SEC/Big10 wants the Virginia/DC market. But a ton of people already watch/spend on those conferences in the state already. A ton of vt/uva fans already consume SEC/Big10 football. So there isn’t a ton to gain by getting Virginia/DC the way everyone thinks there is. Think the movers and shakers see that. ** Edited by wahoo2023 at 7/2/2025, 11:26:49 AM
