i feel everything is largely unpredictable right now
too many massive catalysts that are up in the air(what is really the impact of AI, deficits at well over 100% of GDP now, UBI)
I say good luck to all the Carnacks out there...none of can predict much imho

Anyone into this band called "Rival Schools"
Can't believe I only found out about this band recently. Only two albums, one in 2001, one in 2011. This is from the second album. Check it out homies

i use it every day too
Engineers are 50% complying, 50% fighting it....we are starting to fire those fighting it
I created a trading algo that i backed tested 10 years and it returns 30% a year, which would put me a George Soros level of trading.
I believe it is incredibe but I also believe big companies are full of idiots. I have worked almost 40 years since VT and you have to face it, there are so many dumb people now in corporate america that is very very very easy to believe that companies will burn tokens, misalign incentives, and have nothing to show for spending a ton of money but faked metics achieved by the brown nosers who do PPT all day.
Then they pull back spending and all of a sudden OpenAI and Anthropic can't pay their debt obligations.
I had a front row seat to 96 to 2000.

You can old spend until you don't have enough, then you borrow, and you can only borrow so long. His comment on the TAM being $12B will wipe out the entire tech industry if true.

here is how it works....
Google has this API called "Google Places".
My program searches for Bars in a town by calling the Google Places API with the name of the place. Then when the list is returned, the AI reads the comments made by people on Google, about the place, and decides if it is a dive bar or not. Totally AI driven, as there is no "dive bar meta data tag" on Google.
It's decently accurate, not perfect but pretty good.

my divebar.info site is getting a lot of traffic for Clemson
The absolutely insane thing, is that I really don't know a ton about SEO(search engine optimization) so I have been taking the AI genie's advice, and it is starting to work in niches, which makes sense. We have a lot of city pages now in the sitemap and google is now my number one source of traffic.
So my Clemson SC and Frankort KY (home of Kentucky State) are my two big winners over the past week, with about 200 and 100 visitors from each, respectively.
My twitter agent that Claude runs(her name is Sophie) is doing pretty good getting followers on Twitter.
I am surrounded by robots. LOL

i think all that AI does
is give you better models, a lot faster. I made that program in one evening, including QAing it. This would have taken a developer, a good one, a week at work of coding.
I think that's all it is...the machines read the compiled instructions, so it was only inevitable that they figured out how to code way faster than people. The markets are driven by greed and fear, same as ever.

trying to post follow results screen but site isn't taking the image
What this shows is that over the past ten years, if you bought the QQQ and held it, and then doubled your position via margin when it went up 6% the previous month(this is value X) and covered your margin position when it takes 5% the previous, you earn a CAGR of just about 30%, putting you in the same leagues as George Soros, beating Buffet's lifetime return.
The program solves for X and Y to maximize your return.
It gets more complicated in terms of moving the timeframe but this is enough for the Lounge. Does this blow your mind?
Had to link the image....

beat warren buffet's returns
This AI thing has me dusting off ideas that i was too lazy to ever code. Case in point, how to beat QQQ(nasdaq 100) but not by taking single stock risk.
I have had this in my head forever, and had Cursor(Elon just bought this company for $60B) code it for me. It took it all over 15 minutes to make this.
Here's the idea. Beat the indexes by buying them, but when the market is trending hot, borrow 100% of your equity and put it all back into QQQ. When the trend ends, sell. How do you know when the trend starts or ends, that is what it figures out. Here is the input screen.

there are a lot of vids on social media
of kids with a $100K debt, payments starting in 6 months, and can't get a job to save their lives...it will only take one year of this to destroy the colleges. Why?
I just asked Grok, "what is the estiamted number of students who have or will borrower money for undergrad degree in the US, for the classes of 2027, 2028, 2029 and 2030? "
It said,"Roughly 1.1β1.5 million students per graduating class (2027β2030) are estimated to borrow for their undergraduate degree"
Note that was per graduating class so let's call it 5million in the undergrad system now. Grok then said, "If comparing 5M unique borrowers to total annual enrollment: ~30% (5M / ~16.5M). This treats the borrowers as a share of a typical yearly snapshot of all undergrads."
So we are looking at 30% of people start to seriously question the ROI of this. I think the schools are in deep deep doodoo. They have been growing expenses at X% per year, where X is large and now they have to deal with a large drop(my estimate) in enrollment.
They are gonna be hurtin.

google review calls it βfrathouse by the seaβ
i gotta ask my AI coding engine why it isnt included for Coconut Grove as we have that neighborhood in the system
adding a bar as a βdive barβ involves a few factors like google considers it a bar as their primary revenue, prices are cheap and then the real secret sauce is reading the reviews and deciding based onnthe reviews if it is a dive or not. it works pretty well but if the reviews dont truly represent reality, we end up not includingβ¦we are also limited to 30 bars as i dont want to overwhelm with too long a listβ¦because of this i created a manual add featureβ¦will investigate

My dive bar site is coming along nicely
I have city pages now, and a google sitemap with over 4000 URLs in it, so I am getting search engine love when people search for dive bars in specific cities, so that is cool.
About 600 visitors a day now.
Marketing is handled by Claude. Claude and I created a bot named Sophie who runs the X account at https://x.com/divebar_info - she is snarky.
She has gotten almost 200 followers now. Claude has her tweet a few times a day and follow people of the dive bar variety and some of them follower her back.
This is quite an experiment. I have learned a lot. It's been great for work when engineers try to tell me they can't do things with AI and I call BS on them. I am completely changing how all our product managers and engineers work(at my job) from this experience. Some get it, some don't.

continued to be amazed by AI coding on divebar.info
I keep adding a lot of SEO stuff, but then i noticed performance was stating to be an issue. I asked the AI programming tool, what can we do to to improve performance?
If you are tech savvy, how does this strike you?
**************output from AI tool*****************************
A few likely culprits and concrete fixes (no code yet β want your pick before I touch anything):
Where the slowness is On a cache MISS the edge function does this serially before returning anything:
Geocode the city (1 Places call)
Up to 3 paginated Places searches (MAX_PAGES = 3, ~1β2s each)
For every unscored bar: fetch reviews (batches of 10)
AI dive-scoring (Gemini, batches of 15)
So a fresh city = ~6β15s. GPS searches are even slower because every coordinate is a unique cache key, so almost every GPS search is a MISS.
High-impact fixes I'd suggest, in order:
1. Stale-while-revalidate β if a cached row exists but is expired, return it instantly and refresh in the background with EdgeRuntime.waitUntil(). Users almost never wait on stale data.
2. Round GPS coordinates to ~3 decimals (~110m) when building the cache key. Right now 37.7749295,-122.4194155 and 37.7749296,-122.4194156 are different cache entries β basically guaranteeing GPS misses.
3. Drop MAX_PAGES from 3 β 1 (20 results instead of 60). For dive search 20 is plenty after filtering, and it cuts the Places latency roughly to a third.
4. Skip the separate geocoding call β pass the city string directly to the main searchText (it already handles location text). Saves one round trip.
5. Pre-warm popular cities with a scheduled function (the cities in your cityLandingPages list) so they're always hot.
6. Frontend perceived perf: show skeleton cards immediately + a "Searching nearby dive barsβ¦" message so the wait feels intentional.
My recommendation: do #1 + #2 + #3 together β biggest wins, smallest blast radius. Want me to ship those?

Interesting tweet on university financial positions..
Comments about 2007 being a peak birthrate are interestingβ¦from grok
Why Did It Decline in 2008?
The primary driver was the Great Recession (which began in late 2007). Economic uncertainty, rising unemployment, housing market collapse, and financial stress led many couples to postpone or forgo childbearing.
β’ State-level evidence: Declines were strongest in states hit hardest by the recession (e.g., those with bigger job losses or housing busts). Fertility changes correlated with economic indicators.
β’ Broader pattern: Recessions historically suppress births temporarily (e.g., 1930s, 1970s), as people delay family formation amid income/employment worries. The 2008 downturn was especially severe and prolonged.
β’ Other contributing factors: Slight decline in immigration (which can affect birth numbers), but the recession was the dominant explanation. Long-term trends like rising education costs, student debt, and shifting priorities played roles but accelerated more after 2008.
In short, 2008 wasnβt an all-time low, but it signaled the end of a relatively stable/rebounding period and the onset of persistently lower fertility tied to economic shocks and ongoing social changes. Births stayed suppressed for years afterward, contributing to millions fewer births than pre-recession trends would suggest. scholars.. ββββββββββββββββββββββββββ

The other side to AI boom, dead stocks
Woke up to a nice 30% gain on my short position on Wix this morningβ¦there is no way they compete with AIβ¦.$200/year for website hosting and development using crappy templates feels like 90s tech at this point. They had a nice price point until they didnt.
Other things to short? All of these are like 50% down in the past year, but i think there is downside risk
* All the consulting companies that are not all govt contracts
* All the Indian consulting companiesβ¦the rupee is collapsing as i type this
* SaaS companies
What else? Basically i am not saying these companies are going out of business, but i am saying they will be challenged to have any rev growth, which means they trade then at book value(equity on the balance sheet) which is normally peanuts
