There's no financial incentive for the players to continue playing. In the NBA, players make their salary during the regular season (that's negotiated through contracts as we're all aware) but the NBA has a playoff pool that compensates players for post-season games.
There's no additional compensation pool for college athletes for the post-season. You get what's promised to you in your Rev Share agreement and whatever NIL contracts you sign.
If you want players to play in a post-season format (whether that's the NCAA tournament or even the NIT) it should be built into the contract that they're either a.) required to play to continue receiving their payouts or b.) have an added bonus of the money they would be paid if they play in either tournament.
I think so much of the dialogue on this is pointed at the wrong place. In a labor market, if you're offer is $0 for additional labor responsibilities, you should not expect labor to take you seriously or engage in anything you want to do. After all, as a country, we fought a war over this very thing. So, to me, this is a solvable issue that once again could be solved if college athletics had effective collective bargaining that allowed players to be compensated for post-season performances on top of what they receive for the regular season like every other professional model.
No athlete in this day and age is going to play for free for the love of program. That era is dead and gone. The Hokies should be playing in the NIT but asking the players to do it for free, that doesn't fly with me. If they could increase their compensation by playing in the tournament, they probably would.

This makes me sick. How many banners do we have in Cassell? 1Metro, 1ACC, and 2NIT. They could at least cement their legacy by adding one more and getting some more experience (especially the 2 Bigs), Lawal might want to play since he’s a senior.
As a proposed 1 seed we would have received gate money for 2-4 home games. A portion of which, I assume, could have been passed on to players.
I hate quitters!!! Just imagine if the wrestling team said they didn’t want to go Nationals cuz we’re not increasing their pay.

I kid, obviously, but its funny how people will claim to support the free market but when the free market destroys something they love they blame everything except the free market. This is a free market problem and unfortunately, the courts have found that college athletes should have access to the free market just like all 300 million other Americans do.
While you might hate quitters, even I am not working for free. And, I guess in your life you didn't work for free much either. So, don't blame this team for not working for free either.

for free a lot or my hourly wage was really low. As active duty military and later a salaried employee 40 hours was a slow week. Not complaining as those hours I gave away allowed me to retire at 57.

If you are on scholarship, you're already not "working for free." Beyond that, the fact that college players view playing a sport as "work" is very telling. There are tens of thousands of kids who would do anything to play college basketball for free. For a scholarship underclassman to say "I'm not playing a postseason game unless you pay me more" is incredibly entitled, in my opinion (if that is, in fact, what happened). If I was a coach and a player told me that, I'd promptly tell him he would not be playing another game for me, regular season or postseason.

If they'd somehow made the NCAA tournament, they'd be a big problem for some unsuspecting opponent. Unfortunately for the Noles, their winning streak started just a bit too late this season.

stuff going on behind the scenes for the program. As much as I like to razz the hokies, I wouldn’t want to see the program implode or fall into any serious misfortune; there’s no rivalry if tech is no good. I am fine calling you garbage when I am butthurt about losing in cassel and arguing about foul calls, but I don’t want you to actually be garbage.
But seeing all of these other teams decline NIT bids, maybe it’s just another sign of the NIL times. And doesn’t necessarily mean anything unusual is going on with the program. In my humble opinion, it might be a mistake to fire young but what do I know. Is that in the cards? They were within one possession of UVA at jpj at the end, and I thought looked like they belonged in the ACC, can’t remember a team losing on so many last second shots and I’m sorry but part of that is luck not coaching or personnel.
Hope everything is ok over there, but the NIT bid decline raised my eyebrows a little; CTB would always act thrilled to play in it and would sell the fanbase on how the experience could help the team gel for the next year.

Hoops players don’t make anymore to play in NIT.
We’ve created a business with no incentive to play in games that would likely be on espn2 or espnU.
Let’s just remember the NIT fondly from 20+ years ago and realize it’s dead.

winning the national championship in 2019. There were more players than I could count that it sounded like they were committing to uva, then suddenly went somewhere else at the last minute. This was before NIL, but looking back now it’s obvious someone else just came in with more money at the last minute. Towards the end for CTB, recruits would come act interested on a visit just to drive the price tag up for the team they were going to anyway, and CTB couldn’t deal with all of these recruits acting interested in what the program stood for when it was all just an act.

with your basket program specifically, no. We will continue. And now that I’m thinking about it, the foul discrepancy in the 95-85 triple overtime game this year was outrageous and UVa should have won that game by ten.
On a serious note, I don’t know if uva would have refused an NIT invite this year but there’s no way to know for sure. Did we have any players that would have sat out the NIT? I would like to think not, but I wonder in the new paradigm. Another poster on here made the point that for the mercenary player, the NIT has only cons and no pros.
I thought some of our new players didn’t understand the intensity of rivalry games being more than just road games in the league and that lack of tenacity was the real reason we lost that one.

How many people attended our last NIT home game? And how much money did we make, or lose, by being in the NIT? I imagine the numbers are pretty insignificant, or people in the administration would be voicing opinions.
If we stand to make seven figures, then we should play.

given our history and what the NIT did for us, should be the last school to help bury it. Im not going to be happy this decision was allowed to be made by players.

so it'll likely continue until the end of the contract, and yep the NIT is kind of like bowl games in that the TV ratings, while not great, will be better than anything else that ESPN could air in that time slot.
