Yep. It explained why we could never recruit better prospects after
winning the national championship in 2019. There were more players than I could count that it sounded like they were committing to uva, then suddenly went somewhere else at the last minute. This was before NIL, but looking back now it’s obvious someone else just came in with more money at the last minute. Towards the end for CTB, recruits would come act interested on a visit just to drive the price tag up for the team they were going to anyway, and CTB couldn’t deal with all of these recruits acting interested in what the program stood for when it was all just an act.

Now that it looks like it’s more about NIL than anything being wrong
with your basket program specifically, no. We will continue. And now that I’m thinking about it, the foul discrepancy in the 95-85 triple overtime game this year was outrageous and UVa should have won that game by ten.
On a serious note, I don’t know if uva would have refused an NIT invite this year but there’s no way to know for sure. Did we have any players that would have sat out the NIT? I would like to think not, but I wonder in the new paradigm. Another poster on here made the point that for the mercenary player, the NIT has only cons and no pros.
I thought some of our new players didn’t understand the intensity of rivalry games being more than just road games in the league and that lack of tenacity was the real reason we lost that one.

At first I wondered if the NIT decline meant there might be some serious
stuff going on behind the scenes for the program. As much as I like to razz the hokies, I wouldn’t want to see the program implode or fall into any serious misfortune; there’s no rivalry if tech is no good. I am fine calling you garbage when I am butthurt about losing in cassel and arguing about foul calls, but I don’t want you to actually be garbage.
But seeing all of these other teams decline NIT bids, maybe it’s just another sign of the NIL times. And doesn’t necessarily mean anything unusual is going on with the program. In my humble opinion, it might be a mistake to fire young but what do I know. Is that in the cards? They were within one possession of UVA at jpj at the end, and I thought looked like they belonged in the ACC, can’t remember a team losing on so many last second shots and I’m sorry but part of that is luck not coaching or personnel.
Hope everything is ok over there, but the NIT bid decline raised my eyebrows a little; CTB would always act thrilled to play in it and would sell the fanbase on how the experience could help the team gel for the next year.

Va tech was better that night, no argument from me.
But FSU was better last game. Like I said, they are playing really, really well and it was actually a fluky good performance by white against them or they would have beaten us by 10.
Men's Basketball Board

Congrats on the win. Don’t overlook fsu they are putting it together
Their coach had a really good gameplan and we were lucky to win. I think it’s 51/49 you sneak into the ncaa tournament as the 9th acc team. The league needed tech’s win over Clemson for 9 teams and uva needed it too; it’s now mathematically possible for us to play duke for the league crown.

Louisville is overrated and not as good as SMU. 12.5 dog is laughable
It will be close but you take this one. Then I will have to stop trolling you about not believing in your own team because even the non-believers on this board will believe after tomorrow. Brown is not going to be where he was his first game back even if he plays, you can’t replicate the grind of league play sitting out that long, and your guard will break them down. 79-75 vt.

Oh that was you who made that post? Yeah some people were a little ornery.
But some were respectful. I didnt think it was everyone. But yeah some people were a little over the top now that I am remembering it more.

Are you projecting? You played out of your minds and out-toughed uva.
If an opponent plays a great game and beats you like gurdak and hammond did to us, you tip your hat, kind of like that Stanford kid went bananas after you had it in the bag.
Va tech earned respect over on our board, especially after watching the supposedly more talented nc state team fold like a house of cards in their gym next game. I might say things like I don’t wish you luck playing uva next time. If that’s passive aggressive to you, it’s just ribbing to me.

After enduring the criminal activity of referees in Cameron during the 90s,
it’s just the karmic wheel.
Men's Basketball Board

See above. No, that guy gurdak played out of his mind it was just one of
those games. Thomas was absolutely killing us on defense with poor perimeter rotations.
Men's Basketball Board
6 mo ago
You’re assuming that thomas would have been a positive with his bad D
He was a historically bad on ball defender, we would debate where he stood on the list of all time bad defenders. But he has gotten way better.

Can’t figure out how to edit, but it’s @syracuse that matters, not @ smu
SMU is going dancing regardless, they are dangerously underrated, and have been playing really well.
But @Syracuse is more your head to head competition, and if you beat them in their house you clearly distinguish yourselves from the two other acc teams that are probably competing for that 9th ncaa spot.
Men's Basketball Board
6 mo ago
To some of the ncaa naysayers, it’s 70% chance that ONE of Cal, va tech,
and syracuse gets into the tournament, meaning one of them will get in. So you have a shot, especially considering you have the head to head win vs cal.
It pains me to say it but the uva win is only going to age better as the season goes on; if they win @ SMU they probably don’t lose again until @duke and I would give us a hair under 50/50 to pull that one out. You will have a win over a 3 or 4 loss team and that will count.
Props to coach odom for holding malik thomas out of the end of the tech game; he used it as a teaching moment to show that he will not play even in crunch time against a rival on the road if he will not play good on ball defense.
Men's Basketball Board

Some fans on this board are hilarious. Anytime you want to trade 27 of 31
for our 66% FT rate that would be great.
Men's Basketball Board
6 mo ago
Some teams run five out. Some do motion offense. Cal jumped into the
defender hoping for fouls to be called in the UVA game. What offense are they running in this game?
They don’t have enough depth to stay in this one, 10 point va tech win by the end.
Men's Basketball Board
6 mo ago
That was so bad can’t even troll after
I genuinely feel bad, tech outplayed Stanford thoroughly until the last three minutes. You know when you’re watching a game and you just see and feel one team is better than the other, but the lesser team somehow wins?
I don’t think your season is over, but now you gotta steal one to make up for it. You will shoot better than tonight, save it for @unc I like them even less than you.
On the other hand, our coach has figured out that thomas should be playing at all times. Cal is figuring it out too.
Heads up you will take out Cal and for God’s sake don’t take your foot off the gas next time.
Men's Basketball Board

Y’all aren’t thinking of throwing this one away are you
Stanford is not as good as you and I don’t want our loss to drop us because you lost

UVA fans always wondered why any hokie fans would want to fire CMY
He does an amazing job with what he has and routinely beats other teams with much more talented rosters. He also has a lot of grit and toughness and is civil in interviews but you can see the dog come out of him at times.See last Wednesday.
Who do you think is coming through the door if you ax him?
Men's Basketball Board
7 mo ago
Lol, this reads exactly like our board after losing last game. The ACC is
back to being good enough that winning against 1-9 on the road is going to be tough and frankly any road game could be tough, look at fsu and duke right now.
Men's Basketball Board

Although coach odom was classy and praised virginia tech’s effort and grit
After the game he was apparently extremely unhappy with UVA’s lack of discipline and focus in allowing the Hokies to get key baskets and stops and chewed the team out thoroughly.
On the sabre board uva fans had thought between the two road games nc state would be the more difficult one, with a few fans saying they would prefer a win over state vs a win over tech if a 1-1 split happened.
But after seeing state, they look like a train wreck. Expensive individual talent but poor overall roster construction and lack of team identity. Apparently screaming is the preferred coaching approach over there. The difference in the two results showed the difference in the teams too. State was just fine getting run out of their own building. Ive always liked coach MY, and his team has too much pride to get run out. Odom definitely used the tech loss as a teaching moment, at one point it was 74-47 uva before he called the dogs off to make it less embarrassing.
State apparently has a $10 million NIL budget, what was MY’s NIL if anyone on here knows?
Men's Basketball Board
7 mo ago
Pretty unimpressed with state’s lack of grit
Opposite of va tech game where tech would dig down and get a basket if they needed to change momentum. If you get a lead on stage they just fold like a house of cards, even though the announcers will still talk about the brilliance of will wade’s yelling at the players.

The only thing that bothered me about the game is we came up a
little short on grit at the end, and at a few key points during the game.
Men's Basketball Board

We’re a little butthurt about the foul discrepancy at the moment, but all
things considered as the fan of an away team yes, you have to deal with the fact that the home team is probably going to have a few more calls go their way.
I just remember as a kid watching duke players slap uva players in Cameron so hard you could hear the sound on the broadcast with no foul called, and wanting to throw the remote through the screen.
So yeah perspective. And 20 fouls in the first half LOL, that sounds EXACTLY like the Cameron of old.
Good game hokies, it was fun until overtime #3 for me.

Question to the va tech fanbase who saw the game:
Was this an instant classic between two good teams or a contest between two mediocre NIT teams? What did the eye test tell you, I wasn’t there.
I heard about and listened to the foul discrepancy, but the goal tend was the only one I really wondered about. I somewhat expect that home cooking happens in the ACC and possibly the fans encouraged some of that, I would be surprised if it was worse than coach k cameron home-cooking with Lenny Wirtz.
If y’all suck then this game bodes poorly for us though.

Thrilled that the ACC scheduled this rivalry game over break
And that we get to play tech at their place with a few injuries. @tech is always a wild card even when we’ve had more talent, and I would be happy to escape with any margin of win.
On the UVA board, people are optimistic but cautious because this is historically a tough game to win. I think the Greek kid will get better quickly over the course of league play so I am glad uva is playing him before that can happen. I think you will actually have a better chance to win @uva last regular season game for that reason.

As a UVa fan probably my least favorite vpi player
Just seemed like he was always a whisker from just taking over the game, and was kryptonite against our weak frontcourts some of the years we played against him.
Men's Basketball Board

Will Dorn play against Grunloh, euro vs euro?
Apparently Grunloh was in a higher division of play but was a key backup, not a starter. Does Dorn look good so far or has he really gotten to play much yet?
Men's Basketball Board
7 mo ago
PS. at Texas #55 net win by 19 and uva was ahead by almost 30
south Carolina #117 net win by 3 in overtime. The texas win is by a far greater margin over a far better team than the south Carolina win.
Would you agree?
Men's Basketball Board

But didn’t you barely beat elon at home by less than uva beat Maryland?
Most people would say Maryland is better than Elon. Neither uva nor tech has significantly outperformed the other based on schedule up to this point, although you could say the vcu loss being by a wider margin than the butler loss looks better for uva.
Based on our superior depth and injuries to va tech players it’s not delusional to predict a uva victory. And even uva fans are not predicting a blowout on the road; you just don’t have the horses to say “it won’t be pretty” for uva.

If you have a junkyard dog defender that is really physical you can stop
him. But if not he can really get going. I think he will be able to take over P5 games this season when he really blossoms but I don’t think he can score 30 points against a decent ACC team on the road yet.
Men's Basketball Board

That happens to be a strength this year, our back up center is a hoss
I do think vpi gets it together when lawal comes back and possibly sneaks into the ncaa tournament as a bubble team.

Uva fan here. What is y’all’s honest prediction of the game Wednesday?
We’re pretty happy you don’t have lawal, I think he might be your most important player, and playing when students are out on break helps us too, thanks for scheduling that way ACC!
We’re playing well, but Mallory might have injured his ankle a little bit. Overall, most of us uva fans think we win but some don’t, and others are saying they would be happy with 1-1 in our next two (at vpi and at state), not sure which will be which). All bets off with rivalry game on the road though. I think we beat you by 5-6 points, we have a hell of a lot of talent even with white out, but I won’t be shocked and it doesn’t end our season if you win. Neo looks like he could be a potential star but Lawal is one of those players you love on your team but hate on the opponent.
I would say good luck but you’ll understand if I don’t this time…

Glad we beat you hokies but bummed about the Franklin hire.
He must have a major bug up his a** to prove something when he could have just sat on that buyout money. I don’t think you’ll be quite as good as you hope next year(I predict .500 finish) but by Franklin Era Year 2 va tech football will be back to being a pain in the a** for the rest of the ACC. Franklin is by far the best va tech coach since beamer, still don’t know how you pulled that off.

As much as I would love to pile on, too much talent to say va tech is
definitively a bust this year yet. Young is used to coaching teams with experience, and this was a huge overhaul with the Greek kid. One of our euro guys is good but inconsistent because the us game is different. I hate to say it but you are still probably a bubble team and going to be a tough out in your place. I think this will be a classic greenberg team, on the bubble at the end of the season and live or die with the last few games

He scrambles into the middle of the field & gets destroyed by linebackers
Wake won because they targeted him and knocked him out of the game. With va tech out of bowl contention, I don’t see them holding back for fear of a targeting penalty.
The uva medical and coaching staff have not done a great job protecting players; they examined the top defensive player and sent him back on the field with a torn ACL.

Most uva fans know this is going to be a really close game. Our qb has
been battling injuries and our best defensive player (out for nc state loss) is now gone for the season. So no, only band wagon fans think this is going to be a blowout.
