If NIT winner got guaranteed bid to following year NCAA tourney

That would be a motivation ( but not for seniors). Seeding would be based on next year performance.

Schutt is being hampered by the inability of others to

Knock down outside shots consistently. They are sticking to him and leaving others wide open.

After a score or turnover (I don’t recall), he threw the ball into the

Back of the VCU player that was walking to throw ball in. T was called immediately. ** Edited by jms41 at 11/28/2025, 10:44:47 PM

You can point to lots of things we did wrong. But…

It’s nice to have a team where we have so many guys that can step up and be β€œthe man” when others are having off nights. Bedford was key tonight and Johnson stepped up big.

I’m not sure if we were afraid enough of driving to the hoop

Most attempts were complete failures. But I am probably remembering more of those than actually occurred.

Hopefully we can get big enough leads in the coming weeks

To run 5 w/o Neo and see if we can get that group moving the ball and more consistent than last year. If Neo is a cog (albeit a very huge cog) instead of the one guy that determines our fate, we will go a lot farther.

I think Coach realized β€œuh oh”, maybe this isn’t best first game…

Based on the rough couple minutes he had. I’m sure he will get good time over next few weeks and become more comfortable. No idea how that will translate in games but hoping for the best.

Hansberry will help himself…

If he kicks it back out when he doesn’t have an easy 2.

So how do you do that?

NIL + sell how the roster is going to open significantly for him next year + steal a few more minutes this year from others to get him pt??

Good start…

Neo is a great passer. He may not be an elite shooter but should be much better than tonight when all said and done. We have a lot of guys that can score. Seems like most scoring depth in a long time. And guys that can actually take it to the rim. Maybe a bit too much 1:1 play at times tonight, but that should improve (or those who run the offense best will get more playing time). Rebounding looked better than it has in a while. Got a bit sloppier after we took big lead but the height helps. Better test on Saturday. Should be interesting.

Maybe not elite, but there are guys…

At all 5 positions that you wouldn’t want to leave wide open. That plus better ball movement should compensate for no elite shooters. And some say Schutt can be very good.

Perhaps Hammond and Johnson…

Because of their familiarity with Young’s style of play at this early stage of season? And as Pasha and Bedford progress, we may see them get more minutes? Schutt not in same starting boat because Neo is a rare talent.

Haven’t watched a minute of it

Used to be a huge college sports fan, now disinterested. Call me if/when VT is in something and otherwise I no longer care. I guess tv numbers are ok (?) but I talk to a lot of folks like me who no longer pay attention.

Then we are in good company with the hundreds of other programs that aren’t

relevant either. If I want to watch, it’s relevant. I rarely watch anything if VT not involved.

Not to mention that P2 may not turn out like everyone hopes

Even if VT does get invited. Lots of scenarios that could play out over longer run… Other colleges refuse to play them and interest fades over time outside those P2 alums, so it becomes just another boring sub-NFL pro league. Or, money bubble pops and inflated budgets need to be cut, rendering competitive advantage moot. Or it all turns out great for the money but your team is perpetually mediocre. Many scenarios and as someone referenced below with Tom Petty, we’ll all be gone over the long run anyhow. I spend way less time paying attention to college sports than I used to (only watch if VT involved) and I’m probably better off for it. Probably not the prevailing attitude on a sports board. ;-)

In addition to not sleeping on first day…

Make your last meal in the US no later than 3pm on day of departure. That is dinner hour in London. Nothing but water after that until the next morning. You will be hungry for breakfast at the right time over there, another aspect of acclimating.

I’m there as well…Used to love college sports but not so much now

I have only watched VT games last several years and most of those I miss. True for both football and basketball. College sports are now sort of professional leagues (with inferior quality) and with money disparity there will continue to be only handful of teams that have a chance. Regional rivalries are disappearing. Hard to relate to the players as students since they’re just passing through. We seem to be at peak NIL hype or close. What happens when a kid is getting $500K and doesn’t perform? There is no ROI for the donors other than seeing team succeed and so it seems as if pressure will ratchet up on the kids. People are crazy now when their teams lose (death threats?) but imagining putting $1M bucks into NIL and your guys fail to box out, can’t defend, miss a bunch of shots. The NBA level guys are maybe β€œcan’t miss” (though they may not gel with teams) but those are few and far between. Who knows where all this ends up but I care less every day.

Funny blurb on SEC from USA Today

Greg Sankey has to be punching the air at his conference falling apart in the first round, and it's an even bigger insult when just a few days ago, he suggested mid-major auto bids be taken out of the tournament in favor of more power conference teams. Maybe Sankey now will push harder for that to happen, that way his teams can stop losing humiliating games.
