I see a lot of posts dissing the NIT.
Our program is not good enough to dis the NIT so why not embrace it? The 1973 championship was epic - my absolutely most favorite Hokie sports event ever with the 1995 Sugar Bowl a close second - and the 1995 championship was feel good x 100.
I'm glad to see this team play at least one more game as I really like them a lot even though they were lacking defensively.
As far as your question is concerned, an NIT Championship is better than a one and done in the NCAAT. Thing is, you don't know you are a "one and done" going INTO the NCAAT so I would always want to accept a bid to the NCAAT regardless.

you can argue if anyone cares about the NIT title these days (probably not hard to argue that's also a no) but I think everyone would agree there's no notoriety to be gained from losing the NIT title or less. The only real advantage is more practice time, especially if you have a younger squad. At least with the NCAA first round exit you can create a streak and be in the discussion when it comes to having repeatable success.

Which would be Xavier, Memphis, Texas, Penn St & TCU

... you're not in a position spot me five wins in the NIT or guarantee me a loss in the NCAA. Without those guarantees, I'll take my chances in the NCAAs.
Our perennial "certifiably insane" team was always on the bubble and thus should have been a top contender for the NIT title. But if I recall correctly, we never even made it to the NIT Final 4, let alone won the thing.

NCAAT, but in some years where you were not quite good enough the NIT is a nice alternative. You can get just as excited if you win it as if you win an in-season holiday tournament.

Yes and unlike bowl games, the schools don't get fleeced
NIT pays $4k above expenses per game and the payout doesn't go into a conference pool and there are no ticket guarantees for the away games like you have to buy for bowls. In other words, VT will make a little jack going to the NIT whereas they loses tens of thousands of dollars going to bowl games.
All that being said, I sorely want VT to be good enough record-wise to go to bowl games but I still don't like bowls at all.

Including 2017 up to last year - which is the 6 years the NCAA tabulates their "units" - the only three ACC schools to make the Tournament every year (no 2020, covid), are Duke, UNC and Virginia Tech.
I'm chalking up the NIT this year to the normal upward growth phases of a basketball program - many NCAA appearances, and an occasional NIT season.
