Yeah, at #1

Because of the state of the game during his era. Dominique, Jordan, Carter, all flashier for sure. But no one had done anything like what Julius Erving was doing. As someone else said, he made the playground official in pro ball.

C. Kristin Armstrong

3 golds. Gotta be up near the top at least.

The Lounge 3 w ago

Just looked it up. Taylor Sheridan has never even been nominated.

Say what you will about the believability of Yellowstone. But turn to his other series. Lioness and Land Man are two great series that get huge audiences. Can't believe that at least a writing nod hasn't come his way.

The topspin on that kick was incredible

Seriously. How do you strike the ball to go up in the air eight feet, and have topspin with it? Talented dude.

Westminster in Salt Lake is on the brink of collapse apparently

This from a recent Forbes article assigning financial grades. In 2016, their enrollment was 2700, and last year it was 1200. The board of course disputes the severity of it. Tuition, room and board is close to $60k. Mike Rowe has essays, videos, interviews galore about trade jobs vs. jobs after college.

Deserved

The better team won. Unbelievable defense by Carolina. Congrats.

Laughed at that one...for a second.

The mob involved in college sports. How silly is that notion? Well, it's probably here already, or will be soon. Why wouldn't they step into this cesspool? It's perfect for them. ** Edited by Roanokie at 6/11/2026, 11:29:57 AM

Crazy good game. Wow.

Playoff hockey is so frickin awesome, especially going into overtime. McDonough and Ferraro on the call are also having a night.

One of his ideas kept me employed for 6 years

From 1997-2003, I worked for Turner Broadcasting in Atlanta on the Goodwill Games. Anyone remember those? The USA, soon after the Miracle on Ice and the Lake Placid Games, boycotted the Summer Olympics in Moscow in the summer of '80. Then for the LA Games in the summer of '84, the USSR and Eastern Block nations boycotted. So in 1986, Turner developed a friendly competition between the USA and USSR, that was sort of like the Olympics, but with other things added. Of course, it was all really just programming for TBS Superstation. It floundered around in 1986 (Moscow), 1990 (Seattle) and 1994 (St. Petersburg). Then a new group came in to manage it, which I was part of. We staged it in NYC in 1998, Lake Placid in 2000, and in Brisbane in 2001. The Time Warner and AOL mergers put an end to it, along with CNNSI, in 2003. He was incredible mind and an amazing asset for Atlanta.

Yep, played against Porter back when

He got about 35 pts against us one night. It was Moir's dream to get him and Richard Morgan out of Salem to be the great backcourt combo at VT after Dell and Perry Young. But Morgan was always UVa bound, and of course Porter...didn't work out.

Bad luck on the timing

The nationwide Covid lock down began that day. Had Covid come a week earlier, those two would have been in masks and the bar would have been closed.

Ripped apart on the video board, hopefully.

Geez. Just thinking about it. Is that parachute crash on Saturday symbolic as Whit's last act as AD? Kind of unfair, but not far off.

LIV Golf - Almost RIP?

Emergency meeting of all execs in New York City yesterday + Media Center closed yesterday at the Mexico Tournament site this weekend. Plus rumors of a merger with the DP Tour. Maybe the end of LIV coming soon. Don't get tears on your keyboard. ** Edited by Roanokie at 4/15/2026, 12:29:49 PM

CBS imploded on the final hole

They missed the flight and landing spot of both second shots up to the green. Took them 90 seconds to find Rory's ball in the bunker. How does that happen with 57 cameras and spotters around that green? Then for Rory's second shot on 16, how do you not compare that to Tiger's miracle shot from the exact same place in 2005? They also missed the landing of his tee shot on 15, being right under that tree. Missing some of the previous announcers as well. Trevor Immelman and Frank Nobilo are fine and adequate, but they certainly don't elevate the broadcast. ** Edited by Roanokie at 4/13/2026, 11:55:27 AM

Interesting to read this counter-point on the ratings for that game

You are spot on with the huge change in audience measurement recently - six years ago they finally added in out-of-home (bars, hotels), and then two years ago for full US market inclusion. This article says that has enlarged TV audiences by 38%.

NBA just passed college football for TV rights $$

Annually: $10B - NFL $7B - NBA $3.8B - College Conference Rights fees (combined, including CF playoffs) $700M-$1B: MLB, NHL, PGA Tour, NCAA Tournament, Olympics (annual payments) The NBA was at $2.7B before this season, and the big difference is NBC. They paid $2.5 billion to the NBA for their Sunday night & Tuesday package. This deal is huge because of the impact it is likely to have on other sports rights fees. NBC currently pays the NFL $2.0 billion for their Sunday night NFL package. Many reports say the NFL is pissed, because they get 2 or 3 times the audience of NBA games in that same Sunday night time slot. So now the NFL is opening negotiations early to get even more, and CBS-Paramount will be the first victim. CBS-Paramount pays $2.1B to the NFL for their Sunday afternoon package plus certain playoff games. The NFL is now negotiating with them for a raise to $3.0B annually, in exchange for guarantees by the NFL on the last few years of the deal. All because NBC likely overpaid for the NBA. So that $1B difference CBS is going to pay is now out of the mix for any sort of college rights payment. Don't be surprised if the NFL's other partners follow suit, and these media companies either stand pat or reduce allocations on college sports.

ACC is currently tied with last year for NCAA Units - at 8.

The lowest count in over 35 years. Congrats to SMU though. They were the first of the new three members to get a unit for the conference. Too bad for them they won't see the money though.

Speaking of announcers, Kenny Albert gets some love for his call today

Pretty much agree with the comments in this article re Kenny Albert, especially considering he's been the lead on every single hockey broadcast the past two weeks. Just being familiar with all the other foreign players is hard enough, but to make calls like this one to boot is pretty special. I'd also like to see AJ Mleczko on some NHL games back in the US. She's good.

One last hockey pic

Not-so-humble brag. Eight years ago. Hillary Knight and her 2018 gold medal around my daughter's neck. It's a very special group of young women. ** Edited by Roanokie at 2/19/2026, 4:18:32 PM

Edwards has had 2 or 3 like that

Shooting from the point, with the deflection. Goal for Knight, but a huge assist to Edwards.

This is torture. The US is outplaying them by a mile

The offensive pressure the US is generating in the 2nd and 3rd is fantastic. The time of the puck in the US offensive zone versus theirs must be around 2/3 of the total time. Just gotta get one to fall in.

NBC cheated

Getting Doc Emrick to narrate the opening, because the drama wasn't already 10' thick. What a setting.

The Lounge 5 mo ago

Yep, no doubt. How about 58 other podium results besides the 108 wins?

It's like Jack Nicklaus finishing second in the majors around 20 times. No one can sniff it.

Nerve wracking. Holly cow.

Combined with Shiffrin in the slalom start house this morning, nerves are shot.
