Conference Realignment Board

I listened to a podcast that had Brett McMurphy on it recently
He said there are a lot of things being discussed right now. That doesn't mean they will happen. It would be interesting if your proposal comes to fruition.

Those are the words he used
He's from Minnesota and says some odd things from time to time. It was implied that this is close to happening and could be announced as soon as this football season. He was cryptic about it like he normally is but he says he's that way so he doesn't burn his sources. So my take on it is the Big 12 is pretty far along with this and mostly likely one or more G5 conference(s) are as well. It probably cannot be implemented until 2026 at the earliest according to him. Like him or not he does appear to have some sources that seem to know what is going on. We shall see.

Flugaur did say other conferences were considering
If the ACC implements, it will change the SEC rivalry games after Thanksgiving. Iβm sure the ACC will do it once the SEC does.

Flugaurβs show late last night
Greg says conferences are in deep discussions about scheduling semifinal games to raise more money. Another part of this will be other teams not in the semis would play a flex game. He has mentioned this before. I havenβt had a chance to listen to the entire show but will add more details after I do. EDIT. Just listened to about half of it. He doesnβt want to burn his sources but says this is βpretty far in the weedsβ. Without saying directly he seems to be referring to the Big 12 and probably some G5s. This would be a way to increase revenue. His theory is conferences will form pods and have a semifinal weekend. Iβm assuming this would be the weekend after Thanksgiving and conference championship games would be the week after (like it is now). Teams who donβt qualify for the semifinals will play a βflexβ game where you play a team from another pod to make a nine (or ten) game conference schedule. It was a hard show to listen to. Greg is just getting back from vacation and sounds like he may a bad cold or Covid. Anyway, interesting speculation. It would be easy for the Big 12 to implement this. Not so sure about the other power conferences but if the $ is right Iβm sure they will find a way to make it happen.

I see that as a bloc also
In the future Big 12! I'm just kidding. Selfishly as a WVU fan I would love it but realize you guys would be majorly bummed if it did. Best of luck getting into the P2 or a "Magnificent 7+1" of ACC football centered schools. But if neither works out, please know you would be welcomed to rejoin you old rivals from the West.

I watched some of it as well and really enjoyed it
I hope they don't end up in the Big 12 either. We just got rid of the biggest drama queen of all (Texas) and don't need another one. I predict they will figure out a way to be part of the new Magnificent 7+1 Conference.

That's been edited
It now says "Florida State and Clemson are not currently enamored with the Big 12."

The value of the ACC will be less after the major players are gone
Also WVU has been rejected more times by the ACC that everyone I talk to have no desire to be a part of it. It probably won't happen but we would prefer some of our former rivals join us in the Big 12 or whatever it will be know as in the future. We have no desire to be part of a conference that includes the BC's of the world.

Playing in an ACC without Clemson, FSU, UNC and possibly others
Will decrease the ACC's value to the point that travel costs will not be an issue.

OT- Congratulations to the ACC for getting four teams in CWS
That is a great accomplishment. Now go out and beat the SEC!

I'd be surprised if Cal and Stanford went back to that
They could have had this before they left for the ACC. I can't see these replacements doing anything for the "academic elites" of Berkeley or Palo Alto. Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State, UNLV and Colorado State just will not do for them. I'm sure they will prefer travelling cross country to play Duke, Wake, BC, ND, GT and etc whenever the rest of the ACC schools jump ship.

I know he's not very popular here but
He did change his chalk to FSU and Clemson to the B1G. He previously said it would be FSU and Miami. Take it for what it's worth. He also said the SEC will be patient but will eventually go after UNC and UVa once the dust settles. Says the SEC will be more interested in basketball brands.

How about this? Just spitballin'
32 team conference with four divisions (assuming Clemson and FSU are gone and UNC is influenced to stay)
Eastern- BC, Syracuse, Pitt, WVU, Cincy, Loserville, UCF and USF
Atlantic- VT, UVa, UNC, Duke, Wake, NC St, Ga Tech and Miami
Central- Iowa St, Kansas, K State, Okie State, Texas Tech, TCU, Baylor and Houston
Pacific- Cal, Stanford, Arizona, Ariz St, Utah, BYU, Colorado and SMU
Four division winners play two semifinals the weekend after Thanksgiving and championship game the next week.
Since ND will not join as a full member maybe they can go to the Big East.

Something could happen when the next Big 12 contract runs out in five years
I like the idea of merging the best of the Big 12 and ACC to form a solid conference.

I personally have no problem if Utah goes to the ACC
Big 12 already has the Utah market with BYU. Utah is certainly less than thrilled being in the Big 12. They would rather associate with Stanford.

They want the Big Ten
I just don't see them making this move. Just like I don't see any ACC teams joining the Big 12 unless a total implosion happens which I believe is unlikely.

So will they play in the ACC this year?
Itβs going to be impossible to change the football schedules.

They do not want to be in the Big 12
They want to be associated with Cal and Stanford. Big 12 fans would be happy if they go.

I listened to the podcast this morning. I agree it will all come down to what Carolina does.

Utah and Arizona State
Really wanted to stay with Cal and Stanford. Maybe the ACC can use some of the $ from a future FSU and Clemson exit to help buy them out of the Big 12?

A few points
I listen on double speed and I fast forward until I find the βmeatβ of the show. Usually after 10-15 minutes into it. If not there I keep advancing. Heβs not predicting KU to SEC yet, just saying they are βin the conversationβ. I donβt know how the Jayhawks can get out of B12 GoR they just signed last year. He was on top of USC to B1G and Colorado to XII. I really enjoyed his shows last year about the PAC collapse. There is an Arkansas caller that calls on a regular basis named Jamie Thornton. Is that you?

A lot of Virginia talk in Flugaurβs show this evening
Iβve just caught parts of it. Itβs still going on now. His βchalkβ for SEC expansion is UNC and Clemson if to 18 and UVa and NC State if to 20. Says Kansas will also be in the conversation. A lot of discussion on the potential pact between Virginia schools. Some callers favor Tech over Hoos.

Those programs travel very well when they play in Morgantown
More than any ACC school (minus VT) that has come to Morgantown in the past including Pitt. Big 12 teams travel very well.
Conference Realignment Board

I know you guys don't want this
But I believe the Big 12 would take VT in a heartbeat. I know WVU would put it's full support behind it. So I highly doubt you would end up in an ACC lite with BC and Wake.

Greg Fluguar speculation from last night
Take it for what it's worth and I'm not advocated it so don't shoot the messenger. He speculates that the B1G will expand to 20 with FSU and Miami which he has said for quite a while. He also said he is hearing that the SEC will eventually expand to 18 or 20 schools. UNC and Clemson are the first two. Carolina brings the brand and Clemson brings playoff distribution credits to increase payout. He did say this will take some time (2-3 years). He said if the SEC goes to 20 that UVa and Kansas are the schools that he is hearing will be invited. He feels that basketball will be a priority for the SEC. He also mentioned that NC State could put a wrench into this if they can successfully attach themselves to the Tarheels. I know there is a connection politically between UVa and Va Tech and maybe this will keep the schools together. He didn't say how the schools will get out of their current conferences. Kansas has a GOR with the XII. I'm not saying this is the gospel but this guy has had some predictions that have come true (USC, UW and UO/B1G and Four Corners/XII). His prediction of Kansas comes from a source that he eludes to as a Missouri source. Says this with Kansas is not imminent nor guaranteed.

I wonder if the ACC would ever consider this
FSU and Clemson are gone. Carolina is probably not far behind. In my opinion (as an outsider) Carolina is the key for the ACC. What if the ACC would pay UNC comparable to what they would make in the P2? I know it's not good for the overall conference (see Big12 and Texas) but I think it's something they may consider. I'm sure UNC's first preference would be to stay in the ACC since they basically founded and have controlled the conference since 1953. It would also appease the powers that desire that they stay together with the Wolfpack. It also keeps the UNC-Duke basketball rivalry in tact. Plus it would solve the issues with their nonrevenue sports.

Iβm not a Hokie
Iβm a WVU fan. I didnβt say VT wouldnβt end up in P2. All I said was I would selfishly like to have you in the Big 12 (so we would play more). I also said if P2 doesnβt happen that you would likely stay in a reconfigured ACC. If your program was as strong as it was in the Beamer years then you would be a great fit for the SEC. Maybe it still happens?

The ACC will survive as long as......
ESPN and Notre Dame want it to. I believe FSU, Clemson and Carolina are gone. At least one, maybe more, will follow. Teams that will be added to the ACC will have to pass the "Irish" test. As a WVU fan I'd love to see VPI, Pitt and Loserville in the Big 12 but I believe at least Pitt and Tech will stay in the ACC if no P2 invite occurs.

I think they just wanted the ACC network
So they didnβt bother with the details. It was widely celebrated at the time. Now it appears to be the albatross.
