Selfishly because ACC needs more mens lacrosse members. Utah plays it. Plus been to Salt Lake City. Nice campus and school. Love the zoo next to campus.
I don't think Utah really wants to be around BYU either, and BYU is in Big12 already.

Would you settle for Wake?
We kinda like the ACCN subs in KY.

Hell, pull in Utah, Arizona State to form a Western 5 (with Calford/SMU) and then add WVU to get to 20 football members, and we've got a nice 20-school, 4 divisions of 5, set up that works perfectly for a 9 game conference schedule and setting up 4 rivals. The only teams routinely playing, Calford, Utah, AzSt and SMU are each other. And all football teams get a guaranteed 4 years out of 6 NOT playing them at the expense of there being 1 year out of 6 with 3 road trips well past the Mississippi.
I'm convinced the future of this whole mess is tighter, smaller, regional divisions within larger, more widespread National conferences. I'd even argue you boot Wake and BC and add Cincinnati and UCF and you'd have a solid league. This works:
Northeast: WVU, Louisville, Pitt, Cincinnati, Syracuse
VA/NC: VT, UVA, UNC, NC State, Duke
Southeast: GT, FSU, Clemson, Miami, UCF
Western: Utah, Arizona State, SMU, Cal, Stanford
I'd like for VT to be in that league.

Maybe with some negotiations, they can get the Notre Dame deal.

They are arguably the best B12 football team. The ACC is already ahead of the B12 money-wise, and that move would put considerably more separation between the ACC and the B12. They are even in a new state so the ACCN would get a boost. It also bridges the ACC's gap to the west coast.
We might want to bring in USF, at the same time, because they would be the most logical replacement for Utah in the B12.
I also love that they have Men's Lacrosse, although that is an afterthought in realignment.

Time to circle the wagons around the Virginia Tech brand.
And this should be every school's strategy right now.
The concept of the "conference" as we knew it is dead.
It's probably a lateral move at best for the Utes. Probably better off staying where they are.
And I'm not too sure who "Speculation is circling" is.

They want to be associated with Cal and Stanford. Big 12 fans would be happy if they go.

Really wanted to stay with Cal and Stanford. Maybe the ACC can use some of the $ from a future FSU and Clemson exit to help buy them out of the Big 12?

problem you guys have is that when the PAC was on the ropes, the ACC did not have a life raft that was acceptable to those universities. Unless there is enough of a financial difference, No B12 team will go to the ACC - and vice versa.

Had we done the Calford deal first and had the ability and will to add 2 more beyond that, I don't know if Utah or possibly ASU would have settled for the XII. Keep in mind, F$U, Clemphis, and UNC would have still voted No and would have fought hard to win more No votes from NCS and others. I believe the rest of the Mag 7 might have all voted No as the additions would have created too large of a western voting bloc. VT, UVA, UNC, State, and Miami may not be suing to get out, but we are still eyeing the exits.

But unfortunately Jim Philips had Florida State showing its ass at the time and gumming up the works. Along with Clemson, UNC/NCSU scaring them off. Big12 was a sure thing.

Surprised Utah jumped
From what I hear, they really don't want to be in the Big 12.

They used it to leverage themselves into the B10, which did not really want them.

while quicker action MIGHT have caught Utah interest, UW and UO were B1G all the way when PAC 12 was folding.
(In response to this post by DMV Gobbler)
Yeah. I think UO and UW were always going to the B1G, albeit on a discount.
The B1G had to manipulate the market first.
But yeah. No reason why we couldn't have been in on Colorado, Arizona or Arizona State, and Utah. Need more Western exposure, especially with adding Cal and Stanford. Plus, 3 new states for the ACCN.

But probably not Ore and Wash.
The six western teams, plus SMU would have made a nice scheduling block, to keep everyone from having to travel so much.
Just as important, it would have crushed the B12. We could have taken OK State, too.
