Still holding out hope that the decision makers in the SEC are savvy enough
to realize that UVA is a godawful fit for the SEC and won't deliver them the state or the DMV market. And all the articles mentioning UNC/UVA as the preferred adds are the result of ignorant sportswriters talking out of their asses. But who knows.
Maroon Baboon Maroon Baboon
I somewhat see FSU-Clemson-VT-NCSt as a bloc.
ACC schools that are serious about football. If the B1G is serious about Southern football, no better way to do it than by just taking these four. Four new states and three are highly populated. All four growing. If the SEC wants to corner the market on serious football schools in the South, this bloc would do the trick.
M
Millpoint
I see that as a bloc also
In the future Big 12! I'm just kidding. Selfishly as a WVU fan I would love it but realize you guys would be majorly bummed if it did. Best of luck getting into the P2 or a "Magnificent 7+1" of ACC football centered schools. But if neither works out, please know you would be welcomed to rejoin you old rivals from the West.

that is the ticket for the SEC to own everything below the Mason Dixon Line
And remember, DMV is below the Mason Dixon line. This would also most likely place UVA and UNC in the Big which is more fitting with their academics, non rev sports and less rabid football. But UNC is the fly in that ointment and the powers that be behind UNC football see the very scenario you are speaking of and know that does not advance Tar Heel football so they will leave no stone unturned to get to a higher league than NCSU and VT. They need baby blue privilege succeed in football and they are all about that.
Pylons Pylons
The Mason Dixon line is of zero significance here
E
EDGEMAN
Yep. Maryland is south of the MD line, and they're in the B1X
Pylons Pylons
I understand where the line is
the question is "who cares?" from a conference affiliation perspective...beyond maybe some bass-ackward Dixie faction of fans? Why would any decision be made based on some historically significant, but now meaningless geographical line?
V
VTCALS72
That was my comment and I was just trying to identify something
that would approximate the reach of the SEC. The connotation you are trying to assign to what is identical to state lines is pathetic.
E
EDGEMAN
You don't think a line drawn 150+ years ago is important for conferences...
...today? That's about as useful a measure as what states have the best state birds...LOL!
V
VTCALS72
Easier than saying the MD/PA line.
Why is this even being commented on?
Maroon Unit Maroon Unit
The SEC already has Florida and South Carolina
V
VTCALS72
I believe that to be an incorrect take
Would UVA in the big "own" VA? I don't think so even against a VT who remains in the "new" ACC. Would UVA in the SEC come much closer? I think so. IMHO the SEC with the Florida supporters in Fla, and USCe supporters in SC can't reach into the Fla St and Clemson cultures very effectively UNLESS those 2 schools move or are moved away from their base cultures. Simply put, the Big and Big 12 will be a net negative to even the ACC in competing against the SEC in the ACC area.

I wonder if the author of this article knows that the average IQ of most
of Finebaum's listeners hovers around 75? Don't believe me? Too harsh? Give it a listen and you'll hear for yourself.

Probably a fair amount lower than 75……

It seems like Pollack has always liked Virginia Tech but ...
he doesn't make the decisions for the SEC or ESPN. What he says is true about Tech and State. Maybe Tech and NC State end up in the SEC and UVA-C and UNC-CH end up in the Big 10? I think that would make all 4 fan bases happy and give the SEC/B1G new TV markets and new rivalries. IMHO, I always thought (and still think) the ACC should've made Tech and NC State a major ACC rivalry in all sports since both are large Landgrant universities in border states with culturally similar fanbases. IMHO, I think NCSU would benefit separating from UNC. The SEC would elevate State athletics. I think Tech as an academic institution fits both the SEC and Big Ten cultures, so membership into either would be fine. Wrestling would be one of the sports that might take a hit if Tech and State joined the SEC but they both could join an eastern D-1 conference as an affiliate member. That's what Tech did when they were members in the Metro and BEFC/A-10. Lacrosse is another sport that Tech might have to become an affiliate member. Florida and Vanderbilt women's lacrosse are. Men's soccer might have to also do that (possibly enough SEC men's soccer teams to finally sponsor men's soccer?).

Tech/State to the SEC and UVa/UNC to Big 10 makes the most sense
You still play your state rival OOC every year. No biggie.
V
VTCALS72
It would not make the best sense for UNC and UVA
The best thing for those 2 is for NCSU and VT to be relegated to a lower conference.
R

Agree.
But what makes the most sense gets away from a lot of folks these days.

I have no desire to finish 10th in the SEC every year

Even if you do, other sports will have more money which leads to better
programs.

Missouri has fared well enough
No reason we couldn’t be at least as successful as they are.
B
Big12 guy
Missouri had Pinkel as the coach when they went to the SEC. They had
recruiting momentum, and were vying for B12 championships at the time. Every school has ebbs and flows, but a really good coach that can recruit and develop players is more difficult to find than many give credit. Pinkel would have had Toledo in the playoffs one year if we had the current playoff format back then.

Looser mentality. That same logic would have kept us out of the ACC as we
were picked to finish 7th in our first year. ** Edited by 133193Hokie at 7/22/2024, 10:07:42 AM

Do you have a desire to win a national championship some day?
If so, you'll need the money and the competition to get you there. If not, then it really doesn't matter what conference we're in. Perhaps SoCon to rekindle our rivalry is VMI might be in order.
hokieball hokieball
Gotta be in it to win it.

Kentucky has been in it for a long time., never made the SEC championship

Heard the same thing when VT joined the ACC.

Thought the Big Least had as good, if not better football than the ACC...
...back then. The ACC was "FSU and the seven dwarves," where the Big Least had several good teams. The Big Least also played a much tougher brand of football. You knew you were in a football game...lol
IB4TECH IB4TECH
It was a stark difference.

Once upon a time, there was a Hokie-hating media member who postulated
That VT would never win an ACC championship. VT has won many. The SEC is certainly a step-up, but I wouldn't bet against VT being competitive.

Bill Brill said that for Basketball only
Never win an ACC Basketball Tournament. He was dead we proved him wrong
seekoHoG seekoHoG
After extensive internet searches I cannot find anywhere he intended
his statement limited to basketball. I did find were he admitted he had not expected Miami and FSU football to decline significantly for a number of years. Which makes me think he was not talking only about basketball. Before his death VT won 12 ACC championships across multiple sports.

Brill was a Duke graduate I think
And moved to Durham after retiring. He was onTech’s case during the 1960s. He was ACC die hard
B

I think he said that VT would never win anything in the ACC and VT
immediately won a football championship.

If he was in a SEC town, the locals would have literally...

Rather finish 10th in the ACC or Big XII?

If we are a 10th place ACC team we would be a last place SEC team

If we can’t out-compete Vandy, Miss, Miss St, Mizzou, Kentucky, Arkansas..
..then we suck. But I’ve never been concerned about sucking, I’ve always been concerned about WINNING. We would kick those programs asses on an even playing field. And a bunch of the “elites” as well. Tennessee and South Carolina wouldn’t wanna see VT in the SEC, we’re dangerous AF. VT BABY!!!
wwhokie1 wwhokie1
If we can't finish better than 10th in the ACC as referenced in the post I
Was responding to, then there would be no way we could compete against the bottom of the SEC.
H

We finished tied for 4th in the ACC this year in a rebound year
wwhokie1 wwhokie1
Don't have to convince me, I'm not the one suggesting we finish 10th in ACC
S

If VT recruits and coaches better, they can compete in the ACC every 6-7
years for a 2 year window. That's not gonna happen in the sec.
H
HOKIEGOBBLE
Why? Our $’s would increase much.
wwhokie1 wwhokie1
Our revenue would still be at the bottom of the SEC.
P

Your lack of faith is disturbing. We certainly have the ability to compete
in the SEC if we are on a level playing field with budget/media payout. You must have been very unhappy during the height of Beamer’s tenure.
IB4TECH IB4TECH
I would think with the handles that you guys have that you would
be on the same page.
S

Hope I'm wrong ...
Well, I think it's a moot point because I don't think VT is going to the sec. I think the acc will survive. But if it did happen, 95% of time we will be behind Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, LSU and Georgia and probably behind Tennessee and Auburn. I would love the matchups, but I would not love the mediocrity.
H
hokieZ71
I don’t know, I don’t totally agree.
Mainly because of your statement. If VT is in the SEC and has the right coach with SEC resources, we are going to be good. Maybe not Bama or UGA, but Ole Miss-level, Tennessee-level is certainly attainable. And those two teams are “competitive” in this edition of the SEC. I think if VT is in the SEC, we will recruit the heck out of the 6 hour radius from Blacksburg, if we have the right coaching staff. Secondly, if VT is in the SEC, then the SEC has expanded and “compete” has a different definition. We are used to finishing 1st or 2nd in a 12 or 14 team ACC. 4 titles and 3 runners up over a 13 year span. That was a great run. Leagues are bigger and if we go to the SEC, leagues will be even bigger once again. You can “compete” in a 20 or 24 team league without winning it. Say there are 4 divisions of 5 or 6. Competing in that type of league could be finishing second in your division. It’ll have a different feel. VT won’t have to win 2-3 SEC titles in a decade for me to feel like we can compete.
