There are layers to this. Not "power conference" and "non power conference." 1. Power Federations, SEC and B1G 2. Waning ex-P5s, ACC and Big XII 3. Upper level G5s, AAC and MWC (and Pac-2) 4, Everyone else. Putting a bunch of teams from level 3 does nothing.

They could have had this before they left for the ACC. I can't see these replacements doing anything for the "academic elites" of Berkeley or Palo Alto. Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State, UNLV and Colorado State just will not do for them. an athletic alliance and slap on the PAC-12 logo, it will be little more than the Mountain West Conference with a change of clothes. OSU and WSU are surviving on life-support from the settlement money they got when the PAC-12 imploded. The successful coaches at these two schools have left or are trying to leave. The successful players have left or are trying to leave. WSU athletic director left and their President has announced that he is leaving. They have a scheduling agreement now with mostly G5 schools and a media rights contract that pays them a fraction ( not announced but predictable ) of what they were receiving to operate their athletic departments going forward. The new PAC-12’s revenue stream will be similar to the MWC’s revenue stream and there is little that they can do to change it. Calford & SMU already made their decision out of desperation and joined the ACC for little or no money for many years. I guess you are speculating that if the ACC isn’t around for them to join, then Calford and SMU will have to make another decision out of desperation for the future of their athletic departments. Independence IMO would likely be the best option at that point.

Getting Power Conference status is another. Just saying they will apply hard with pressure. Kind of like Houston and Cleveland demanding to have their NFL franchise returned. Agree, I don't see Power status forthcoming.

However your recent post have swayed me, that you have some good connections and what you are saying is consistent with what I hear/believe will happen in the future. PS Some here are basketball first fans, and they don’t want the ACC to change. I understand that, I love ACC basketball, but IMHO, you don’t sue your Conference and stay, the question is how big will the buyout be? Also, who has a landing spot if they leave? I think the Mag 7 plus ND have a landing spot in the P2, but will it happen all at once, or over time like expansion has been in the past?

I’m sure all the teams will be solid and have certain standards for being invited. But make no mistake, that is not a “power” conference. It is just maybe better than the average G5 and will get paid far below the actual P2 and below whatever level we now consider the ACC and B12.

especially if Calford goes back. If the new Pac takes no more than the top half of Mountain West, it would qualify, IMO. It would be the weakest power conference, but still significantly better than the G5, top to bottom.

part of a Mountain West PAC as long as the ACC emerges as a stable conference. In addition, with their potential, academics, history, and being the flagship of California - look for them to end up in the Big 10 with Stanford before they go to a G5 conference. Cal could be a sleeping giant moving forward, they just need an administration that elevates athletics, rather than looking down their noses. The recent collapse of the PAC may just wake them up.

In the near future I don't see the P2 expanding past 2-4 more schools. The only additions that would be approved for the time being is if that school increases revenue for each member not dilute the revenue chain. Taking less shares is one way. ** Edited by INSIDE99 at 6/7/2024, 1:49:41 AM
