Would be interesting if ACC holds together if just one brand is left
Looking at you Clemson. I don't think they are going to make the Big 10/SEC cut. All it could take is one brand for schools to 2nd guess moving on (Louisville, Pitt) to the Big 12. Clemson, ironically like Oregon before Phil Knight's money and hiring of Chip Kelly, was a very good school but then became a brand with their winning consistently. BYU and Texas Tech are on the brand path status but need multiple years of winning and CFP appearances. Utah was getting there but then stalled out. Baylor under Briles was getting there too but then the scandal and that was that.

Revised six with Virginia into P2
Big 10:
North Carolina
Virginia
SEC:
Virginia Tech
NC State
Florida State
Miami or Kansas
Three Florida teams in the SEC seems a stretch thus Kansas.

Who are the six (6) in your opinion or from your sources?
Big 10:
Florida State
Miami
SEC:
North Carolina
Clemson
Virginia Tech
Kansas
I reluctantly put in Clemson but don't see a better 4th. I figured Florida State wouldn't be doing all their stuff the past few years without some assurance from either the Big 10 or SEC. You could argue the same for Clemson but not sure.

I've always liked Memphis. They have good fans, good in the major sports,
good location. Beale Street is great. Fred Smith, billionaire visionary who started Fed Ex, died last year. He was a Memphis University alum and threw his money around into the school so it puts a damper on the investment going forward.
Memphis University gets a bad rap due to the crime in the city and their academics. I still think they would be a good addition to the ACC or the Big 12. Rivalries with Louisville and Cincinnati.

Appears to be cheap. Heard they could have gotten more for say Allstate
Insurance but wanted to appeal to younger or more hip audiences. If the logo is very small, fine. If it is something that dominates the space on the jersey, that's not a good deal. I know each school is in the works for their separate deals for additional logos.
Not sure if the Big 10 and SEC will be doing ad logos as they don't need it. The Big 12 will get a few million more by going this way to cut the gap. I expect the ACC teams will do the same.
As part of the agreement, Monster is putting the Big 12 in their advertisements. Nobody is talking about this benefit, they are just criticizing the small amount per team.

Yeah but Tech blew the door wide open with the crack allowed by the judge.
It was all about Texas Tech after the temporary injunction ruling by the judge.
Texas Tech: "Hey, the judge ruled he could play so we want to have the opportunity to play him."
Big 12: "We view him playing as damaging to the Big 12 and to the integrity of the game. As a compromise, we'll allow you to include him on the team, run practices, coach QBs, but we don't want him playing in a game."
Texas Tech: "Well, we aren't saying we are going to play him, but we aren't saying we won't play him. You'll know Week 3."

If ACC is looking to just get money, fit be damned a la Cal, Stanford, SMU
ACC should consider getting into the next most populous states for the ACCN and the in-network carriage fees. Northern Illinois would be one. They are just outside the Chicago area but are close enough to qualify for in-network. The hope too is to get the whole state but getting Chicago is enough. They would take a SMU type deal. But ACC should stipulate that they never will get any tv revenue, main ESPN or ACCN. They'll get CFP and March Madness disbursements and maybe you even cap those too.
The other big state is Ohio and try to lure Cincinnati. This would be contingent on ESPN strong arming the tv distributors for in-network carriage fee for the entire state.

Yeah but the billionaire believes he and Tech have all the clout - 99%
of America believed Tech can't play a gambler, case closed. Nope. The billionaire and Tech fans remarkably are looking through it from a different lens.
Some of their fans believe they need to get out from the Big 12 because other Big 12 schools don't "invest" like they do. What a crock, "invest". How about "buy". What a world - conference affiliation is due to how many billionaires you have as boosters.

Be prepared for the baggage
Yormark told the ND AD to shut up and sit in the corner. He's having his hands full with the billionaire Texas Tech board member who doesn't like to be told "No". Not sure if the ACC wants a Texas clone, a FSU super lite, in the conference. ACC would be getting the Texas treatment: moving the conference headquarters to somewhere else, say Dallas even with 75% of the teams east of Dallas, tv timeslots preferred for Texas Tech even with existing brands in the ACC, no Friday games for Tech, no Thursday games for Tech, lacrosse, wrestling aren't sponsored by Tech so am sure he'll find a way to minimize them further.

Partly because they are prohibited from throwing things on the field
Of course it is just tortillas, a tradition that goes all the way back to about 1990. As the Tech AD said, "nobody tells us what to do", but they complied to avoid facing fines and are bitter about it. So Tech is angry about being told "No" on the tortilla throwing on the field and about playing a gambler.

This is interesting as thought
ESPN and distributors came to an agreement it was only the San Fran and Dallas areas for in-market rates and not the whole states. The article I guess doesn't allege this is not the case. San Fran and Dallas has tons of people regardless.

Sad part it really is not ESPN that is the final decision.
ESPN says with schools X and Y, we will give you this. You take X and Z, this is what you will pay you. The presidents and board members are the ones that sign off on everything.

I doubt ESPN would be active on breaking up the Big 12. They tried before.
ESPN pulled the strings on the Oklahoma and Texas move to the SEC. ESPN then used the previous Big East playbook by actively moving Big 12 schools to the ESPN controlled and less costly AAC. But then ESPN got Bowlsby'ed. Bowlsby sent in a cease and desist
letter to ESPN on their actions to harm the Big 12. Bowlsby said he has evidence.
Kind of would like to see this situation just only for any Kessler type lawyer representing leftover Big 12 schools in suing ESPN and issuing a subpoena to Bowlsby to get past ESPN's role on realignment out in the open.

Who's the best from the Big 12?
Until this past year when NIL payments ramped up (BYU, Texas Tech), there isn't much change from #1 - #16. Kansas is the exception due to the basketball brand. ACC definitely has hierarchies. Maybe state schools get a nod as well as attendance and recent winning success in the major sports as criteria.

You may be right but hope they fail.
They grabbed the biggest brands from the conferences. Sports are healthier when the media money is distributed, regardless of brand or market size. Yankees were running the MLB into the ground until they agreed to a luxury tax. Yankees revenue increased as MLB is in a better place. Hockey, the same way. They didn't play for a year while sorting it out. Now it is way better.

I agree - Clemson better be flying their ACC flags
as I don't think they have a new home in the Big 10 or SEC. It may sound weird but not sure if FSU does also if Miami keeps ascending.
I predict SEC offers NC, Duke, Va Tech, and Kansas. Big 10 offers GT and Miami. NC and Va fit the Big 10 better but SEC has more room and Va Tech fits the SEC culture better. Can't see both Big 10 and SEC going more than 20. Big 10 teams already complaining 18 is too much.

The ACC will continue to have more than the Big 12
due to the brands. Big 12 had them too and they left. Pac had the brands - they left. When the ACC brands go, well, the ACC will be like the Big 12 but worse. The Big 12, in a weird way, were fortunate to be the first to lose the brands as they got the best available teams for an overall deep middle tier of teams.

Gap still too large to ACC from Big 10/SEC for the brands
Agree with VT ChemE that thought there would be more of a disparity between the top and bottom ACC teams to help out the brands. About $80 million per Big 10 team and will go up with their next contract in 2030. New SEC contract 3-4 years after but SEC is trying to go to market earlier. The gap is just too much for the brands to not jump ship provided the Big 10 and SEC will take them. North Carolina is a no brainer for Big 10 or SEC. Getting into Florida for the Big 10 would be enticing for them too.
If the ACC can get the gap to say $10 million, the brands may stay. ACC should look into an even more unequal revenue sharing model.

You may be right on the average difference. What do you think the split
for success initiatives would be for Miami, FSU versus say Pitt, WF and BC? We talking $70 million Miami, $65 million FSU versus $35 million Pitt, WF, BC? Hoping we hear how the success initiatives translate. $70 million is close to the Big 10 number.

Does ESPN really make that much money off the ACCN?
The bottom of the conference teams are usually put on the ACCN routinely in football. Plus, ESPN is probably not making money off the minor sports being shown. ACCN was born from an extended GOR and after the low ball, and ACC accepting, ESPN offer for the main ESPN media package. Once teams leave the ACC, I expect ESPN will try to find a way legally to dump the ACCN.

Who's saying it is for the ISU lifeline?
Iowa State keeps getting crap about being broke due to the AD's speech a year ago about revenue sharing. Iowa State is in the same financial situation including Kansas as a lot of P4 schools. They do have the Cytown project getting near completion so maybe they do need a little bit to get over the hump before the revenue starts rolling in.

Yep, Petitti (I mean Fox) trying to find ways to get part of the CFP
If ACC and Big 12 agree to this, then soon it will be 4-4-2-2-1-x, then 5-5-1-1-1-x, then 6-6-0-0-0-x. Keeping holding firm and say No. Big 10, and SEC the past two years, trying to use their leverage now before more data of the portal and NIL shows the talent evening out. SEC has more to lose being in smaller population states, less alumni. They are lucky they have oil money of A&M and Texas schools in their conference.

Maybe but committee has put in lower reputation teams ahead as others.
SMU got the nod over Alabama last year. Miami hasn't done much in over 10 years. They have a brand name but not as much as Notre Dame's.

You are absolutely right. Big 12 has a bunch of solid teams
but doesn't have the blue-blood schools. The ACC has the blue-blood FSU and Miami teams, a recent but shaky status blue-blood in Clemson, then a drop-off, and then a bottom tier. The Big 12 was loaded with blue-blood/brand schools before they lost teams. Fortunately, they got a good pick of solid teams to backfill. The ACC has got to hold on to those blue-blood teams as there aren't any solid teams to backfill except UConn and Memphis in my opinion.

Dan got his result to stick up for the G5 and has axe to grind
He had his column written up 2 weeks ago whether it was the ACC or Big 12 that fell flat. He doesn't like the recent talk of the G5 being relocated after the JMU and Tulane results. He blasted Yormark for arguing Boise State shouldn't be ranked ahead of Arizona State in last year's CFP.
I agree with Wolken that the G5 plays just as good enough ball as anybody else and should be included. Been tons of blowouts in the playoffs including Alabama this year and Oregon last year. SMU was just a G5 2 years ago and doing well now having the opportunity.

I am in the opposite boat. I enjoy watching the bowl games. I am sitting
around the house after having to burn vacation days at the end of the year or coming home from a boring workday since half the clients and co-workers are on vacation. So it is nice to see a college football game come on. When it comes to the 2nd week+ of the CFP, I am sort of already checked out of college football and have moved on to the NFL.

No as will be less regular season revenue
24 teams means the regular season will be diminished. Less fans will attend the games thus less gate and concessions revenue. Also, less fans will watch the regular season. That means less media revenue. So it would be diminishing returns from the bump up from 24 teams.
I do like the same automatic qualifiers though for all conferences. I see the Big 12 and ACC vote yes, Big 10 (Fox) yes, SEC no.

Not sure why the ACC didn't merge with the Pac.
Seemed like a good fit. ACCN could have had all those states.
This merger was brought up by a lot of people when the Pac was struggling for a new media contract, but the schools never pulled the trigger. My assumption is that the combination didn't bring any extra money and the time difference was a big factor for tv ratings. Most conference schools will watch other conference schools. Hard to do when the west coast games per tv preference start at 10 p.m. EST and vice versa for 9 a.m. PST ACC games. The other factor is travel cost and the stress on the athletes. I haven't seen Cal and Stanford's travel expenses leaked, but I am sure they are enormous that they want to keep it quiet. A western wing would help but is it really a conference if the teams rarely play the other wing (eastern or western) schools?

I would hope so but pessimistic they will do anything
On a good note, there are a few lawmakers speaking out and Cody Campbell ads running.
Hopefully, Congress acts before anymore ACC/Big 12 defections. It's already bad for college athletics with 2 conferences having all the advantages.
Conference Realignment Board
9 mo ago
It will be good for the G6 also.
It wouldn't be socialism or all equal. Big 10 and SEC will still get more, ACC and Big 12 will still get more than the G6, but the gap will be much less. I don't know the exact numbers, but it is something like $90 million Big 10, $85 million SEC, $55 million ACC, $50 million Big 12, $1 - $10 million G6 once you add in CFP, bowls, March Madness, etc. Way too much gap.
Campbell needs help from influencers. Saban is not helping. Big name sports personalities and writers like Dellenger, Thamel, Charles Barkley, etc. need to speak up. The writers are scared to death of losing their access to the Big 10 and SEC so they are clamming up. In fact, we have seen the Big 10 and SEC call in favors to writers to attack Cody Campbell this past week.
If Campbell is successful, this will bring back and help restore regional conferences like the ACC. The Pac 10 (not the current Pac) may live again.

But ESPN and Fox have the most games, thus the most audience.
Plus, you know CBS and NBC would leak to the Big 10 (and probably SEC even though this contract is not with them) that Cody Campbell has inquired about buying ads. The Big 10 and SEC would put pressure on them not to run the ads.

More than 16 teams is bad. 12 is good. Big 10 wanting more due to Fox
not getting the CFP so they can bid on these extra games. Plus, I still see Petitti angling for cross over regular season games with the SEC. These non-conference games are going to be boring if there is no at-large component factored in to the CFP.
Tony "Participation" Petitti was working for the MLB when they expanded to 3 wildcard games. MLB used to be one team gets in for each league, then they made it two when they went to divisions. Then they added a wildcard. Then, they added 2 more wildcards. So not surprising that Participation Tony wants more playoff teams, diluting the regular season.
Conference Realignment Board
10 mo ago
Not sure I like this. Too many playoff games. Boring.
I like that the ACC and Big 12 get the same amount of auto qualifiers. If they cap it at 16, then all for it. I guess I would accept 20 as long as the conference championship game is gone.
By the way, funny how this article said the SEC proposed the 5+11 and then the Big 12 and ACC jumped on board. That is not how it went. The Big 12 and ACC were the ones that pushed back on the 4-4-2-2-1 Big 10 model for a 5+11. The SEC were the last one to support the 5+11.
Conference Realignment Board

On one hand, ESPN and the schools spent a lot of time and money
launching the ACCN. So ESPN pulling the plug on the ACCN seems unlikely on the surface. However, there is history on this, albeit on a smaller scale - The Longhorn Network (LHN). Texas put the infrastructure in place and ESPN helped strongarm the distributors to accept the LHN. Years later, ESPN pulled the plug on it and helped facilitate a Texas (and Oklahoma) move to their other entity, the SEC.

Hardest job Sankey had to do was convincing the lower end members
to go to 9 games. Big whoop. Must have took the energy out of him. Now he needs somebody else to help negotiate the next media contract (years away) on whether each school gets $150 million or $175 million. Very stressful job indeed.
Conference Realignment Board
10 mo ago
Agree on the SEC disparity. However, there is one SEC team
that starts with a "T" and ends with a "s" that would stab their fellow conference members in the back to achieve another buck for themselves. If Ohio State and Michigan are getting $150 million in unequal revenue and each SEC team $100 million, they are out the door.
