Ohio State Prez re: ACC-esque viewership model for rev share in Big 10
I think anyone can read between the lines of the article to see OSU's president wants unequal revenue sharing in the Big 10 based on a viewership model. I'm sure rumblings from the SEC won't be far behind.

for outrage. That the President of a major academic university that generates the most revenue from athletics of any university in the country feels unencumbered to lobby publicly for even more money for his school's 'non-professional' athletic "enterprises" so as to better tip the scales in "athletic" competitions with no evidence of the irony or embarrassment .
What are we doing here - LOL!!!!

IIRC, UW AD had also mentioned this.
UMCP and Rutgers would benefit the least from this.

I’m not sure OSU, Michigan have much leverage.

with them. It amazes me how if people keep saying the same thing, true or not, how much people are brainwashed by it.

the uncheat brand is really all they got. Win and that VT brand becomes relevant again if not better.

they want college football to have the same 6-8 teams contend every year; and irrelevancy for everyone else. If they could give Purdue, NW etc a nickel a year they'd do it.

media contract because the country wants to watch the Gophers play the Boilermakers.

it will be the beginning of the end for the "conference" paradigm in college football. Why even have conferences at that point?

The B10 has a significant disparity between top teams (Michigan, OSU, PSU) and bottom feeders, somewhat like the ACC.
The SEC has less disparity, and they are more traditional. We will see. They may or they may not.
Personally, I am not against unequal revenue sharing. It's the best alternative when you cannot remove a non-performing member (deadweight, as you describe).

for both now that the ACC has done it. The top SEC teams will not want the Ohio State’s making substantially more money than them to care of the bottom of the SEC.

that starts with a "T" and ends with a "s" that would stab their fellow conference members in the back to achieve another buck for themselves. If Ohio State and Michigan are getting $150 million in unequal revenue and each SEC team $100 million, they are out the door.

There is no doubt in my mind, unequal sharing will be coming to them too. Josh Pate did a great podcast saying now that the ACC has it, watch the B1G and SEC will have it too. This was done months ago, and now the B1G has it, it puts the pressure on the SEC to get it too.

we have had Universities that make, spend, and cheat more than other universities. it's been like that since the beginning of time.
This idea that somehow revenue should be even, or that out respective schools should be making as much money as other blue bloods or brands is beyond my comprehension. There already is uneven distribution in the college ranks. Always have, and always will be.
What is different, is that the cheating is now legal.
Texas, by far, always made more money than K-State (perfect example), but K-State always competed with them on the field and for conference championships. Texas left the conference to make even more money - for gods sake, it's the American way.
The issue with schools and fans, is that to compete "legally", and the players getting paid, they too will have to come up with the revenue that the blue bloods have always enjoyed. Add in NIL, and the schools with the most money will be able to buy the best players.
It's that last sentence that needs to be addressed. K-State(perfect example) didn't need Texas type revenue in the past to compete with Texas. Today???? I'm not sure one can make the same argument. they don't have to be as rich as Texas, but in order to compete, they have to be in the same neighborhood of player salaries.
It seems we all want to be in the P2 so media money can make up the difference. Lucky to be a Purdue? Maybe, but if anyone here thinks for one solitary second that a Purdue will ever make as much money as an Ohio State, or anyone added to the BIG in the future, I've got some bad news for you - it's not going to happen.
We could all make the same media money in FBS, but OSU, ND, USC, Bama, and all the other blue bloods will always get more revenue. It's just reality.
The best that a K-State(perfect example) can hope for, is a hard salary cap with no cheating. I say that, because even if they were added to the SEC tomorrow, they still would not be able to compete with Texas money.
Let the rich get richer, because they have always had coat strings, and is why a K-State is on the same field. Find a way however, to not let those riches be the sole driver in being competitive or not.

socialism, has failed every time it has been tried. K-State could get an invite at a full share in the SEC or BIG tomorrow, and do you think there is any way they will ever compete with Texas in the revenue department? Not a chance, ever.

Isn’t equal distribution like communism “by defnition” while unequal distribution is more capitalistic?
But I understand your view.

which means we're at a major inflection point in college sports. Everyone (meaning the broadcasters and the top 10-12 programs) think everything is gangbusters right now, but the vast majority of people that actually love and follow college football will tell you that they've never been as disinterested and disappointed in the sport. Real fans have been sold out for casual viewers. Unless you follow one of the top 10-12 programs in the country, you've been entirely sold out. You don't matter. You're expected to eat your slop and like it.
That never works out in the long run. There's a reason the NFL has replaced the MLB as the most prominent and popular professional sports league in the country. All you need to do is examine how both leagues are run, and you will begin to understand why college football is headed off a cliff.

I hold out, that because of "education" and Title Nine, congress will get involved. Where that lands us is any ones guess, but the cliffs edge is approaching fast.

I think the worst scenario is each state government decides to pass their own laws which could trump the NCAA bylaws. At least by Congress getting involved there is the possibility of some sort of standardization for some of the bigger issues plaguing college athletics right now.

school like it. We need to “invent the future” in our Athletic Department, and let go of the Mayberry Management approach.
PS I said from another school because we need to consider people from innovative Pro teams, and innovative sports media. Again, INVENT THE FUTURE!!!
