I like that the ACC and Big 12 get the same amount of auto qualifiers. If they cap it at 16, then all for it. I guess I would accept 20 as long as the conference championship game is gone. By the way, funny how this article said the SEC proposed the 5+11 and then the Big 12 and ACC jumped on board. That is not how it went. The Big 12 and ACC were the ones that pushed back on the 4-4-2-2-1 Big 10 model for a 5+11. The SEC were the last one to support the 5+11.

games. I am with them on this one, the Opt Out Bowls are awful and meaningless. I would rather see big matchups in week zero for all and not just a chosen few. I agree on the Conference Championship games, they are almost as meaningless as the Opt Out Bowls. They can be called the Knock Out Conference Championships. You are right the B12 and ACC came up with the 5+11, and the SEC figured out they would probably get more teams, and then jumped on board. Maybe this the B1G's counter punch to make sure the SEC doesn't have so many teams in the playoff. B1G and SEC are back to competing and not cooperating now, which is probably best for the rest. Their collusion to build a monopoly was awful for keeping the nation plugged in, especially if 8 Schools get in because they happen to be in their conference(s).

If the conference's automatic bid is tied to the team receiving a home game in the 1st Round of the FBS Playoffs or a bye to the 2nd Round, then that could be huge if a conference has 2 or more teams with the same conference record and they didn't play each other during the regular season. Heck you could even include the same overall record if you want to muddy the waters even more.

If the schools want to keep the participation numbers the same in the tournaments as currently exist for the bowl games, then you are probably talking either 3 tournaments of 32 teams or 4 tournaments with the participation number less than 32 teams for each tournament.

Now that everybody will be on equal ground with 9 conf games, the auto bids are no longer as critical. They are getting closer to my proposal from this summer. And if everything is on the table now (more teams, no conf title games, etc.) then it opens up one of my more extreme scenarios that I never posted. In an attempt to be creative, I looked at the option of eliminating just the G6 conference champ games. What that opens up is the chance to have a mini-playoff to earn the way into the big dance. And we could even throw ND into that mix to make them play an extra game (if we keep the P4 conf title games). You can see below how this could play out over two rounds and result in two playoff spots for the G6+ND. Or we could leave ND out of it and one of the G6 conferences gets two teams in their mini playoff (would have to base it on rankings).

As you may remember, I was wondering about Petitti’s next move because he was so determined about the auto bid idea. If the SEC doesn’t budge, it makes sense for the B10 to sweeten the deal for the ACC/B12 But of course it doesn’t mean that the SEC is going to agree.

There is big money in making the playoffs, and with unequal sharing, it might just be better to aim for the top 4 in the ACC. What am I missing?

Per public sources it looks like the participating teams make between $4M and $20M, based upon how far they progress. That doesn't seem like a lot of money to me, and the conference doesn't seem to benefit. What am I missing? ** Edited by VT ChemE 1986 at 9/25/2025, 11:16:22 AM

the further the CFP championship moves toward the SEC/B1G championship, the less anyone not connected to those conferences cares...about both the playoff and some of the regular season.
