I'm not sure the conference championship games are completely meaningless.
If the conference's automatic bid is tied to the team receiving a home game in the 1st Round of the FBS Playoffs or a bye to the 2nd Round, then that could be huge if a conference has 2 or more teams with the same conference record and they didn't play each other during the regular season. Heck you could even include the same overall record if you want to muddy the waters even more.
