Bad coaching hires, like at VT and everywhere else. Why hasn't Penn State won a national championship since two years BEFORE ND last did so with all of that Big Ten filthy lucre ?

The revenue and expense by sport, male vs female, even coaching are reported. Also explore IPEDS for very fine detail on a vast variety of school characteristics. Familiarize yourself with "unitid" identifier which is used in many of these databases in place of Texas A & M University-Corpus Christi, or like.

The EADA is interesting, but appears to be smaller total numbers (revenue and expenses) compared to what is reported for tax purposes. I might still add the private school data since it is better than nothing. But overall, my data will use what is reported for taxes since that is very well known for the public schools. I think this blows up the P2 or bust argument. Just joining a P2 conference accomplishes nothing. The earnings range over 2X top to bottom. If you want to improve upon your position in the ACC by moving, you need to end up in the top 1/3 of your target conference. Good luck with that. If VT stays in the ACC and can regain its top 3 position in football, they will be in the ideal position. I also had no idea that ND was top 3 in revenues. No wonder you don’t want to join a conference. You would be crazy to do so. Although I do have to point out that your independence argument is clearly propaganda. This isn’t about philosophy. I knew that ND's revenues were that high. It doesn't need to dump football into a collective to generate those revenues, unlike......everyone else. It is philosophical, as ND truly loves its independence, but philosophy without revenues is poverty.

Teams like Notre Dame and Alabama had national success that goes back to the 1920's. They continued it in the 1960's and 70's, which was amplified by television. Newer blue blood teams like Ohio State had national success starting in the 1950's. They continued it in the 60's and 70's. Again, amplified and solidified by television. Media companies often lean on nostalgia for established brands because it makes marketing easier and offers more guaranteed consistent viewership. ND is part of a preferred group that has existed for a very very long time.
