What is the fastest you have ever driven or as a passenger. Me, I drove
my wife's Mitsubishi 3000GT at 90mph. Not very fast compared to today's traffic om I64 or I81

couple of us would head to Wrightsville Beach from Raleigh on !-40 and the road is straight and flat. We would open up our bikes and hit top end speed for a few miles and then throttle down. At those speeds I'm surprised none of us ever got a ticket or worse got thrown from our bikes and died.

Was it smart taking that thing that fast? Absolutely not but it sure was a rush

Jumped out at 130 knots (149 mph) from a C130 once, twice or 35 times...

The circumstances of needing to drive that fast meant I didn't have a chance to look at the speedometer. Guessing it was somewhere around 110mph.

on the main straight of Summit Point Raceway (main circuit)
driving my supercharged Miata (300+hp)
I have a lot of room to improve my skills.. should be able to hit 135 on that straightaway but my corner speed entering the straight is 5-10mph lower than it could be.

Less than that.

riding shotgun in a car with 3 other guys heading down I 81 near Marion. I was turned around talking to the guys in the back seat. I happened to turn and look look at the speedometer...100 mph. I yelled at the driver to slow down!

Riding in Ford van in 1973 on engine cover between front seats. ( pledge trip) facing guys packed in back( too many) every one yells DEER! And in the time it takes for me to turn around everyone is watching a couple of deers cross over I81 to the right side. I’m turning from the left to right and see the last buck coming from the left. Couldn’t get the warning words out of my mouth before WHAM we hit it. This is a van that is flat across the front with the engine between the front seats. Deer hit right below driver side and crushed in the metal in front of the brake pedal. Driver couldn’t get any braking. We’re going down hill on a large I81 hill. Scary ****. Driver stand# up and practically jumps on the brake pedal. Thank god it worked. We got it slowed down and stopped. Back up the hill every pickup truck in the county was there to take that deer home. ( not open deer season)Troppers told us it was ours. Yeah, throw that dead thing in the van with an overcrowded van of frat boys. We told trooper to give it too the first truck that arrived. Good old boy jumped out cut that deers throat and throws it 8n the back of the pickup. We limp on to our UVA road trip and complete our road trip. True story.

But I would take it to the peg had to be near 140mph. I85 in Dinwiddie had a long straight stretch, we would race late night. Looking back its amazing I made it out of my early 20's. I ended up hitting a tree at 70mph in that car.
(In response to this post by HokieNLot11)

Weird luck, blown front tire, car up on 2 wheels, and the tree is stopped by drivers side door hinges.

Moving to the right lane for me to pass. Unfortunately, they were moving over as the signs in German must have said Left Lane Closed Ahead. Popped over a hill only to see the cones and barricade ahead. Took out a few cones but made it to the right lane without blowing through the barricade.
Whew.
Whew.

So about 150 mph. At that speed, the toy cars from the former East Germany come up fast.

Edit - just remembered it was winter. January I think. Froze my ass off riding that thing too. But those were the days, huh!

I would drive it over 100 frequently….speedometer only read to 100, and I pegged it a lot. Lucky I am not dead.

6/30/91. I had a car of knuckleheads pass me, pull in front of me and then slow down 3-4 times in Gulf Breeze on the way to P’cola Beach. Each time, at the speed limit, I passed them and returned to the right lane. Not once did I accelerate until the bridge, where they tried it again. This time I floored it and at the top of the bridge I hit 130, then started down shifting and made the toll both with minimal braking and no beep on my radar detector. After I paid the bridge toll, I was waved over to the side of the road by a police officer standing in the road and I was issued a ticket. They were timing cars between points, fortunately for me. They waved over the 4 door Accord with the knuckleheads too.
Most fortunately for me, this happened at the last day of the month at 1130p. A new law went into effect at midnight. Under the law when I was ticketed, I got to go to a driver safety course with a $20 fee and the ticket went away and no points. I also got a standing O in the class for highest speed over a speed limit, I won by 30ph. 😎 I also used my course completion letter and got a discount on my USAA insurance.
If the ticket had been 30 min later on 7/1/91, I would have had a hefty fine, been required to take the course at a fee of hundreds of $, and received a crapload of points on my driving record.
My tiny, blonde, Hokie friend slept thru the whole event. Which was fine, she was well rested when we got to her condo. 😎ðŸ‘ðŸ»
Sorry, no unshuns. 😉

Probably the fastest was 110-115mph in 1986 heading down the western slope of North Mtn on I64 between Lexington and Covington with no one else on the road.
The rotary engine was not even working hard. Could have gone much faster.

70-80 and going to 110 or so than it had 0-40.
Later models seemed to have even more acceleration.

My recollection was that the rotary never gave you the feel of getting thrown back into the seat but the acceleration was strong and consistent and all speeds.
Because it drove so well at high speeds and because the speedometer was small and to the right of the large tach, my wife had no idea how fast I was driving!
I married the RX-7 in Jan 1986 and married my wife in Nov 1986. She always thought the sequence of events was backwards but if I had married her first, the RX-7 would had stayed just a dream.

Great cars. I don’t know how the non-turbos would act, but it took a brief moment for the turbo to kick in and then you’d get this amazing acceleration- especially in the latest model. Best car I ever had. Engine seal issue was why I sold it.

I thought that was a home run for Mazda. Cool that you had one!
I once test drove a 2003 RX-8 while waiting for my Mitsubishi Montero to be serviced. I took it out on the highway (with the sales guy unfortunately) and drove it about 10 miles. On the return, I decided to gun it on the interstate onramp. I looked down at the speedometer as I was going down the ramp to see that I was doing 70mph and I was still in 3rd gear. That car was like a rocket compared to 86 jet.

Was riding with a friend late one evening, when he decided to run a red light at 100 mph.
As for myself driving, I've been in the lower 80's on parts of I-70 (MD), I-81 (VA) and I-10 (AZ).
