I used to smoke pork butts for 12 hours, then my wife tried cooking one in
the crock put with liquid smoke and I truly couldn't tell the difference.

Another tipping question. We are having a 75th birthday party for my wife.
It will run from 5 to 10 PM and there will be both a buffet and passed food items. There will be 95 guests. The caterer is providing two waiters/waitresses and two bartenders. They will be there the entire 5 hours. My question: what to tip these people? I'm vacillating between $50 ea. or $100 each. Also, we will have a DJ to provide entertainment between 7 and 10 PM. He is being paid $525. Should he be tipped? He works for an entertainment company, he is not an independent contractor.

I'm intrigued by the Slate electric pickup truck. We had a 1991 Chevy S 10
beater that we used for the usual occasions when we needed to haul stuff we didn't want in our cars. It was only used every month or two, it sat outside so it usually had something that need to be fixed whenever we wanted to use it. Plus the critters love to chew on cars left unattended for long periods. We have two cars we can use when range is an issue, but I can see this being used for short trips and the occasional need to haul stuff.
I very much like the idea of being able to start with a bare bones vehicle and not paying for a bunch of stuff that has no value to me. I'd first have to see if I fit in one (I'm 6'-4") and I would have to reconcile having to sell my 40 year old 944 to make garage space.
They are currently saying a bare bones example would be under $30K. I'm curious.

Speaking of student overcrowding: My freshman year (1966) I was assigned
to East Campbell. The new dorm under construction, I think it was Pritchard was late, so they put three of us in a room in that old building. We could barely turn around and the closets were about 12 inches wide. But back then we didn't now any better.

No, but when I stayed in Femoyer Hall if someone was in the shower you
yelled "Flush" before flushing the toilet so the pressure drop in the cold water didn't cause the person showering to be scalded.

Almost all my investments are in our retirement accounts, so the taxes are
based on withdrawals. We are of an age where we both must take RMD's and at our level the marginal tax rate is 24% Federal (plus we live in Maryland so they are even more punitive than Va vis a vis state taxes.). We pretty much can live on our RMDs but when we do have need for additional funds, we have a personal line of credit with a local bank at prime đ. As for moving, we live in a very special place, 10 acres on a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay surrounded by huge mature hardwoods with no other houses visible in any direction during the summer when the leaves are on the trees. We were lucky to fall into it 40 years ago at a price we could afford then and there's no way we're leaving.

I drive a 2015 VW Passat diesel with 140,000 miles on it. I will keep it
until they take the keys away from me. For me cars are machinery. The VW will run all day at 80 mph consuming 40 mpg and go 650 miles between fill ups. Our house that we designed ourselves is 40 years old. Our splurge spending is on travel. Our last big purchase was about a million $ spent helping our daughter in law build her own veterinary hospital. We still have several million left. And once you have substantial investments, modest market moves mean big money. A 0.5% day in the market is 25,000 bucks in one day is you have $5M invested. The biggest luxury of having wealth is freedom from worry about money. And we are Ut Prosim Society members.

Any other of you Lounge oldies have Mayor Barringer for Business Management
courses back in the day (late 60's-70's)? I went out of my way to get in any of his courses that I could. Classes were a hoot, and you actually learned something. He referred to me as "Fish Head" because I called him in his capacity as mayor of Blacksburg to get my neighbor's garbage picked up because I said the fish heads in it smelled to high heaven.

New season of Clarkson's Farm started yesterday on Amazon video. Hilarious
series about Jeremy Clarkson formerly of Top Gear fame buying a farm in retirement with no prior farming experience whatsoever. This is the 5th season.

Anyone here have minimally invasive heart bypass surgery? My cardiac cath
earlier this week turned up a blockage that wasn't stentable (big disappointment). The hospital I go to has very up to date facilities including robotically assisted cardiac surgery. I'm hoping I'm a candidate.

Timing belt; age or mileage? My Porsche 944 had it's timing belt replaced
8 or 10 years ago, but I probably haven't driven it 4,000 miles since then. Opinions on whether it should be replaced again or ride with it? This vehicle is strictly for amusement.

Had a PET stress test this past Thursday. Not the results I was hoping for
Showed reduced blood flow to part of my heart. No blockage, but 12% ischemic burden in their lingo. Seeing a cardiologist Wednesday and hopefully an angioplasty soon after. I had been experiencing low stamina for quite a while and then an intermittent weird pain across my shoulders and arms starting about a month ago, so my primary doctor scheduled the test. I'm somewhat puzzled in that there has never been any coronary artery disease anywhere in my family, my cholesterol has been below 200 consistently, and I quit smoking 36 years ago.
The good news is that this explains my lack of stamina and energy and the report said the ischemic burden was partially reversable so hopefully I'll get some of my energy back after this is over.
I'm curious if any Lizards out there have had this procedure done, if so, how soon were you able to return to normal activities, in my case, golf.

Shout out to Billy Mays. Follow up on my earlier post about my ER visit.
The blood spurting from my leg that required the ER visits spurted on the light gray carpet in our bedroom where it sat for 11 hours while we were on our medical adventure. After we got home, I attacked the stain with Oxi Clean and damned if I didn't get it to nearly disappear. Billy would be proud.

Ah, modern medicine. Spent the entire night (9 hours) in the emergency
last night. Getting ready for bed, I pulled off my sock which pulled off a scab from a nick on my leg no bigger than a match head. I tiny jet of blood started spurting out and wouldn't stop. I take a full size aspirin daily for some afib which exacerbates the situation. Because it was a pulsing spurt of blood I figured I should get it looked at. Long story short, spent 9 hours in the ER, 7 in the waiting room and 2 in a treatment room to see a doctor who said it wasn't arterial bleeding, put a new dressing on in 5 minutes and said a pleasant goodbye. That's what I get for being an avid watcher of The Pitt.

If you have a probe type kitchen thermometer, check the ground temperature.
