Heard a great nil story yesterday.
When Spencer Rattler went to South Carolina the local GMC dealer provided him a new gmc suv. The next season (this past season) Rattler gets a nil deal with the Mercedes dealer for a G wagon. The gmc dealer finds out and tells rattler he wants his car back. Rattler claims the car is his, but is reminded it was provided on a lease and he doesn’t own it. Also in the deal is a provision that rattler can’t “endorse” another car dealer. So rattler has to turn the car in.
Also found out that rattler wanted, and was given, a $500k pay raise last year so his total cash nil was $2 million. The team didn’t qualify for a bowl.

Are any of these NIL “valuations” real? Totally up all these “ deals” would exceed what an athletic department could raise. Rattler getting 2 mil cash doesn’t seem plausible.

Growth and the resulting business and real estate booms. Both Clemson and USC have a lot of wealth within their donors and as the two primary schools in football on the state they’ve done really well raising money.
I don’t think any college player is worth even $500k a year but I also don’t have $500 million plus sitting in the bank.

Beyond the likelihood the government gets involved……
I really think the pieces are in place for this NIL stuff to implode.
There’s no Mercedes dealership gonna pass out G wagon leases for an entire recruiting / portal class even in Austin or College Station.
At some point there’s no squeal left in the pig and imo we are rapidly approaching that threshold. We’ve gone from trying to put some much needed funds into deserving young athletes to a mini-draft w significant signing bonuses.
This has serious tax implications - at least to me. If the dealership is writing these lease (loss) costs off, what is the tax treatment of that vs what the dealership got from the school? If the lease value is > $15,000 ($17k might be the new cap) per year who is paying the gift tax above that amount? Is the lease value viewed as income since it is being paid/given the lease amount? Insurance and maintenance - who is paying that.
Need a tax guy on here to detail “how” the government could treat all parties.

for everyone to admit NCAA has become a pro league without any salary cap or financial fair play regulations. All US Pro Leagues have it, European soccer leagues have it, this is becoming ridiculous.
Might as well drop the degree requirements for these kids, UNC did it. Also, if I'm a college student why should I pay for an athletic fee to support these programs?

that she creates, not including the other social media sites. She has a whopping 12 million social media followers around the world. She is #1 college female in NIL, all sports. She is a marketing machine. She has a huge following at all the home and away gymnastic meets. She's a good gymnast and participates at the meets. LSU has to provide extra security for her on campus and at the meets. Gotten too dangerous for her to go out alone. #2 highest NIL college female is Angel Reese at LSU.

She has charisma. The Miami twins were more ballers then dunne is a gymnast. But she can hold her own. But she’s a marketing and recruiting windfall for LSU. SEC football players on the other hand have to win football games. You fail to win, and your finances dry up. Really kind of dumb for Mercedes to offer rattler a G wagon. He’s not that level.

marketable skill set could play for their favorite team. NFL QB's flop and don't pan out often, nice that he was able to tap in to some cash earlier than he could have under old rules.

It will change to direct pay by the athletics programs very soon IMO
These collectives were thrown together upon short notice as a means to funnel cash . When the big 2 divest from the NCAA they will set a new paradigm.

Separate the big 2 + pick of the litter from the rest. Pay students, have the NFL throw in cash, make it for profit.
Then have the schools not included go back to amateur sports. No playoffs, bowl system like what it used to be.
I'm not certain which I'd prefer VT to be honestly. There's something purer about going to the amateur route. Less money driven. Less slimey.
