Maybe he grew up a Wahoo fan, but decided he wanted to go somewhere that
has a football program? ** Edited by HokieKip at 5/15/2023, 1:34:14 PM

Difficult to compete with top ~10 level teams...
I don't think it's a nil thing as much as prestige, especially for HS recruits. It's a bit of chicken vs egg, but VT has to get-back to near top ACC to get more (recruit) looks.

Pretty sad VT can’t make top 5 for kid in our backyard.
Also, was David Wilson the last stud HS RB we have recruited? Is it my imagination, but didn’t we use to get at least 3 or 4 of the top 10 recruits in VA? Now we fight to get recruits 20-50. Portal transfers may eventually save VT, but I fear the days are gone when we could land at least a few 4 stars. I was going to say I’d love VT to be able to land a stud DE, but we really haven’t really landed a known star at any position in years.

Not every kid wants to go to college in their “backyard”.

It isn't all gloom and doom, folks. This is 757 but hey....

The last regime just didn't recruit AT ALL
Today's kids are young enough, too, that our "golden era" is as meaningless as Carlisle Indian School's is. Momentum keeps momentum. We are a resting rock. Pry is starting from scratch in an era where recruiting has only gotten even more competitive; hyper competitive.

Home of the Hokies is now Home of the 3 star recruit

Last staff couldn’t work with 3 or 4 stars. As long as this staff can
develop players for improvement, I don’t care about their star rating.

Don’t have the resources or NIL of any of those schools. Get used to it

Well, frankly, I don’t think his goatee qualifies as being in our top 25.
Embarrassing, and simply not qualified.

Unfortunately it shows where we are as a program.
A long line of irrelevance, going 3-8 in 2022, and losses to lesser in-state schools will push good in-state players elsewhere. Unless it’s a goal to play for VT or we can sell sand to the Saudis, there will be a lot of this until we can pull ourselves out of the hole we are in.

IMHO...From a long Time VT fan..
VT is and will be a mid level program. Money Controls the College Football Landscape, ESPN and NIL Money. In about five years there will be about 4-5 Super Conferences that only big bucks can buy. I don't see VT being there. Dr. Sands and WB seen the future when they hired Pry and didn't invest 6-8 milllion in a big name coach ! Carry On..

Best we can hope for is a top 20 team. An occasional "dip" in
the top 10 during the season. (not at the end of the season) ** Edited by OlderHokie at 5/13/2023, 1:21:46 PM

Yeah. Frank and Bud were anomalies that got us to the highest levels
but those days are over. It was fun while it lasted.

Maybe 2 Super Conferences? Agree Hokies Not In.

Apparently not in the SEC. According to most of his picks.

You you think it is really as much "us" as it is the divide between
bluebloods and the rest? I have followed VT football for probably 60 years and except for that one period of time I call the Beamer Bubble, we were not seen as "big time" We got an occasional Bruce Smith but most of the bigger name players went elsewhere. I think it is way more just how football is and how the bluebloods can do things and are looked at by the best who want to cluster together more than wanting to be a big fish in a little pond.
E
EDGEMAN
When you say bluebloods, are you talking actual play on the field or...
...how much those programs are getting paid by their TV deals? I only see two true "bluebloods" on that list for "on field performance," which are UGA and Bama. Everyone else is 2nd tier behind the clear leaders. That doesn't mean they can't make it there, but they are definitely a step behind.

I think the money has shown
That whereas performance on the field means a lot, it pales in comparison to the glitz, the money and the cred the national media provides to who they want to provide it to. So when I say "bluebloods" I mean like historic national name tops like Duke and UNC in Bball this past year. All the media wants those 2 back and their less than stellar performance this past year has not changed nor given the teams that replaced them in the sweet 16 much additional cred. Back to football, IMHO the media and advertisers only want less than 30 teams already anointed teams to promote and the best players mostly want to go to those less than 30 schools.

Nope and I'm not stupid enough to start.
I've also never pretended the relationship nonsense was meaningful.
V

It has been meaningful, just much less today

Seems like the best players in the South love their local schools more
I understand looking at a broad range, but to not even consider a local school tells me Tech is battling more than handshakes and relationship problems on the trail.

I’d guess Tennessee is making the hard sell
Penn State and the Gamecocks in the mix

Hopefully he is smart.......
PSU is where VA RBs go to disappear and never be heard from again. Probably not an accident that it is 5 SEC schools and PSU.

Before Beamer II, Ohio State would've replaced USC-E.
Surprised tOSU didn't make his list since they have success in the state. Like some posts below state, he'll likely be in the portal in a few years, especially if he goes to PSU. ;)

Top 5 players in Va don’t go to Tech
He’s from Salem. 15 years ago he would consider tech..

We don't have the same football reputation we once had. Those three win
Seasons, and repeated seasons with five to seven wins really hurt recruiting. We have to prove that our football program is more than just Frank Beamer and Bud Foster. If Pry starts having some success on the field, we will become more appealing to recruits. Right now, why would a top recruit want to come to Virginia tech and compete for five or six wins a season?
V
VTCALS72
Not so sure if that was the competition

That is the way it......
has worked out recently. However, in former times VT usually made the cut and even landed them from time to time. Salem has a great program and has won a lot of titles, however, it has been quite a while since they had talents like Lewis and Cole. Some Salemites might say D'Angelo Ramsey but, as good as he was on the field he was a no-go due to off the field concerns. Lewis is likely what Marcus Parker would have been absent the knee injury and Cole would match up with Dennis Haley physically.
