Winning gambit to entice ND (as a partner with Stanford) to face the inevitable and join. Part of me is surprised it didn’t work. I think the B1G is still using the carrot instead of the stick, but a 10 game conference schedule would put USC in a tough place to continue the rivalry. I know most of you are understandably tired of ND and their “first world problems “ but this constant vitriol directed at ND is tiresome. We just want to be allowed to be who we are.

Not a word about HOW and everyone already knew why.

That “interview “ was preprepared and JS wanted to say that. I can only speculate but the bad blood ACC/ND must go both ways as you implied but I think it was also a stakeholder “warm up” ( in addition to the odd Tallahassee mention) that B1G sooner than later. Barf.

If it is only 20 or so go semi-pro, ND will try to hold together the academic side. If the entire B1G, SEC and Clemson, FSU, UNC, USC go semi-pro so will ND. Too much money and identity is attached to football. Sigh...

If this goes without major protest, that will be the decision. If there is a big donor rebellion, compromises will be made. The issue of independence will pale by comparison. The NCAA restructuring and the media deals might really spark a “blow it up and start over”. I’m shocked how quickly ND went from railing against paying players to “all in on big boy football”. The fallout from the next three years won’t be kind to ND maintaining independence - too many powerful influences will make it very difficult. Swarbrick and Jenkins are both nearing 70 - their legacy will be where ND lands. I was so sure that our alignment was best with ACC schools. That ship sank. The B1G will probably be our final resting place - wording intentional- but it will look nothing like the Big Ten we turned down in 1999.

That it was never discussed to just expand the playoffs for year 11 and 12 alone.
Kind of a trial run before the media contract opens up? Since it seems as though all three alliance conferences eventually want expansion - this might have been a nice compromise serving to decrease rancor. Thanks for posting that article - an interesting read.

So much has been written below about how adding Notre Dame to the Acc would make its long term survival more likely.
1. ESPN would open the contract, no doubt. But let's say the conference stays at 15. How much money would this truly add? 6-7 ND home games moves from NBC to ESPN. 5 million more per school? 25 million more per school?
2. Moving beyond the critical "identity" piece, what does Notre Dame surrender? What could be negotiated?
- non-Saturday home games are a huge problem for ND> Our fan base comes from across the country, most far from SBN. I travel 11 hours - That might be about average.
- because our fan base has to travel and stay near SBN overnight, we need to know our schedule way more in advance than January 31.
- ND gets drafted for night games almost all the time on the road. Is there any way to restrict this? Even our "close" fans have to get to Chicago and that ends up being 3 am.
- ND games would then fight for a spot on the mouse networks instead of a guaranteed slot on NBC - this is a net negative for our ACC opponents as well.
- Scheduling the ACC as a conference would be better off scheduling like we are scheduled. We play many of our ACC 5 give opponents more often than some of you play each other.
So what does ND gain by joining? Within shouting distance of B1g/SEC, say $60 million per year? I can't imagine that Phillips/Swarbrick/ESPN have not at least had that conversation.
But is there anything else?
- CFP access? TBD
- playing for a conference championship has some meaning. Our players would enjoy that. ND has been in the CFP conversation for five straight years. Having something to play for if we lose to Ohio St and Stanford by Oct 15 might add value. That BC game in November has way more panache if a trip to the ACC championship is on the line.
- weekly/yearly ACC honors for the players has some value to them especially in these NIL days
- the ACC games would be less of a "burden" and more interest.
What is the true value to having Notre Dame join the ACC for the ACC and Notre Dame?

The NCAA reorganization really does have to come first. That will define the next phase of CFP and media rights deals, not the other way around. The endgame is the great unknown. If the conferences of the P5 remain at odds instead of cooperative, the outcome may be as dysfunctional as the present. If the P5 can act as a true alliance all will win. Given the track record - I’m looking at you SEC - even some P5 schools will be squeezed out. ND? With all apologies to Terry and goldendomer it is hard to envision a single P5 independent to work out in this scenario. Where do we end up? Who knows, but it will be somewhere. It will be interesting as hell, but not pretty… just one man’s opinion.

The Notre Dame athletic office sent out a post season survey to all football tickets buyers. There were sets of questions about the ticket buying process, parking, concessions, Covid-19 protocols, game day staff, etc. More interesting to you (and I quite frankly) was a several page survey about out opinions about the P5 conferences, starting with the ACC, then the Big Ten but included the other three. The topics to be rated: ACCN quality and use, conference competitiveness, prestige, moral behavior (!), authenticity, credibility.
It certainly hinted at testing the waters to me. Was wondering if Terry and goldendomer got this and what they think of it. Rest assured my opinion has never before been solicited on these matters. These are interesting times…

Marcus Freeman is a smart, charismatic, genuine man who sees Notre Dame’s unique approach as something to believe in, not obstacles to overcome. There will be learning stumbles but if you can view the greeting by the players you will have no more questions. I hope Coach Pry gives you the same hope and joy we are feeling today!
