Three Alliance Conferences block expansion 🔗
Three different reasons, although as has been discussed here, the Rose Bowl is a big reason why the B1G and PAC didn’t support it.
Most if not all of them, think it should eventually expand, the big question for the long run, is what will be the rules for qualification? There is a lot of disagreement that needs to be worked out here.

That it was never discussed to just expand the playoffs for year 11 and 12 alone.
Kind of a trial run before the media contract opens up? Since it seems as though all three alliance conferences eventually want expansion - this might have been a nice compromise serving to decrease rancor. Thanks for posting that article - an interesting read.

I would expect that the easiest way to get everyone to agree is to offer up "small" changes to the 12 team proposal. Without resolving the Rose bowl issue, the PAC was unwilling to make the changes permanent. Good for them.
It sounds like the group choose the all or nothing approach instead.
The Alliance heads must hate that Keenum guy, who ran to the press to rat out the Alliance votes. We should demand that he be removed before voting again.

the 5+1 basketball which may have set the tone for the rest of the group. I'm not saying that the Big Ten was necessarily right or wrong to do that or that the Alliance was right or wrong to take its position. It just makes it difficult to compromise if you provide no room to the other party involved in the negotiations.

Iâ€ll have to admit, I would like to see the Rose, the Sugar, Orange and Cotton Bowl be the quarterfinals on New Year’s Eve night and New Year’s Day night. One at 4:00 and one at 8:00 each of the two nights.

"As the College Football Playoff management committee prepares to continue its discussions on Saturday about expanding the current four-team format, Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren told ESPN he remains steadfast in his belief that the Power 5 conference champions should automatically qualify for a spot in the future."
"It's just very important that we have the automatic qualifiers for the five conferences," Warren said on Friday. "It's just the demands of the schedule ... and I strongly believe that if you are crowned the Big Ten champion, that you should have an opportunity to participate for a national championship. ... I feel strongly about that as I stand here today."
Historically speaking, the Big Ten champion would have still received an automatic bid if the Playoff went with the top 6 ranked conference champions, regardless of affiliation, receiving automatic bids. Given that the Big Ten refuses to support that model, regardless if the Playoffs was 8 or 12 teams, says to me it is more than just about the role of the Rose Bowl which leads me to the sharing of the money with the G5s.
