ND seeking $75 million a year media deal to stay independent
"Notre Dame would remain independent if it can earn at least $75 million annually in media rights revenue from current broadcast partner NBC, sources told CBS Sports. The Fighting Irish's deal with the network is set to expire in 2025.
For NBC to feel comfortable raising Notre Dame's valuation to such a level, it is seeking "shoulder programming" from a Power Five conference to enhance its college football coverage.
When that had previously been speculated, the Big Ten was the conference mentioned most often as a target.
However, the Big 12 has emerged as a strong option to fill NBC's shoulder programming needs."
NBC's negotiations are expected to extend across the next 2-3 weeks, according to a source. The network has been the rightsholder for Notre Dame home football games since 1991.
The current deal averages $15 million per year, but Notre Dame is currently earning $22 million annually due to the backloaded nature of the contract."

I haven't seen one of these in a while. And it's coming from a ND site. Basically says ND could convince Stanford and Navy to come with them, and 1 other possibly Oregon. I don't think those schools will like being on an island. But could be wrong. It does say that the Big Ten is the most likely home, but this author doesn't really like that choice.
I'm not optimistic that Notre Dame will ever join the ACC, but this is an interesting thought.

As a sought after independent they can play almost every game at home (or a home game moved to a neutral site, such as Navy in Dublin or BYU in Las Vegas). Excluding USC/Stanford/ACC away games (just 3 or 4 total away games per year), every one of their games could and should be on their own TV contract .

This ND article appears to be laying the groundwork for the ACC. It would be sad to see ND sell its soul to the Big Bad 10. They are a much better fit in the ACC if the money gap can be addressed.

If the Big XII deal expires in 2025, I don't know how they can talk with NBC for a while. I'd imagine Fox Sports has a similar Exclusivity Window. This is unless due to the exit of Texas and Oklahoma triggered some clause in their agreement that allows it.

Going from $15m per year to $11m per game. Plus NBC would need to fund an entire new conference at P5 rates. I dont know if they are that committed to college football.

Just 2-3 years will still likely cover Oklahoma in Texas being in the Big 12. Then you have BYU and those AAC teams including Houston, Cincinnati and UCF all apparently entering the Big 12 in 2023. Those AAC teams will likely compete with Oklahoma & Texas for two years, at least for the year of 2023. Good background games for the Notre Dame channel for those few years.

but, if NBC gives the Irish $75 million they are ought to have their head examined. A three fold increase from the current $22 - $27 million given what the current ND product is and what the likely product will be over the agreement represents looney tunes.

I can just cannot see NBC agreeing to that huge an increase in payment to Notre Dame. It looks like ND is just upping the ante to see exactly where they stand as an Independent versus joining a conference.

This IS the current market. It's why The PAC 12 couldn't keep their star players. It's why TX & OK ditched the Big 12. It's why 2036 is forever to ACC.

ND is nearing the end of the latest NBC deal that ran for 10 years from 2015-25.
Previously, ND and NBC always signed 5 year deals from 1991-2015.
We are talking, all of this, about a new NBC deal beginning in 2025. I guess is look for a new five year deal if it happens.

I re-read this thread. I see the large increase being asked by Notre Dame from NBC. I hope they get it. I think most SEC people want to see Notre Dame stay Independent and playing those five games within the ACC.
