Key to the season IMO: don’t start 0-2
If we do we’re in trouble. Vandy should be a winnable game at home. Likely night game for home opener = we usually play well. Pavia makes it harder than it otherwise would be but like our chances for Siefkes to show what he’s made of

Strongly disagree. Pry hasn't been good at many things but having his
players stay engaged in the season or into an individual game when things don't go well hasn't been one of his problems and, arguably, given the evidence, it's actually an area in which he's good. While starting 0 - 2 would suck, I'd say it's not really a key to the season. Winning the other 2 out of league games and having a winning ACC record (5-3) would actually be a notable season to season improvement given a younger roster and mildly tougher schedule. 7-5 for this team would be a success and that is very much feasible even if we go 0 for 2 against our initial two OOC SEC opponents.
reestuart reestuart
Yeah, I think Pry's teams play hard. Hard to knock him for that. That's
probably his biggest positive attribute. Plenty of negatives, unfortunately.
BG Hokie BG Hokie
Yes, he strikes me as a really good players coach that does a lot of the
intangible little things right from a motivational standpoint and also a talent acquisition standpoint. When it comes to technical aspects of coaching, to most certainly include hiring technical coaches, I think he's been well below average. You combine the things Fuente did well with the things Pry does well and I think we'd have an upper level coach that would leave us for the SEC!!! Instead, we have a AD that will probably be fired because he's hired two coaches that need (ed) to be fired.

His hiring of coordinators has been BY FAR his biggest weakness
I don't think Bowen was that bad, but we wasn't good enough. He may get experience and have a much better second run at OC. He is not responsible for recent mediocrity nearly as much as Marve, who is the worst P5 DC ever. VT's first half defense was hard to watch. The second half defense was hide-the-women-and-children bad to watch. He he hired slightly above average coordinators, he would have won 8+ games each of the last two years.
reestuart reestuart
VT would have been as well off with no DC the past couple of years.
H
Happy Dog
Marve was pretty destructive
If the players under Siefkes have any semblance of knowing what they are supposed to do at any time, that's a vast improvement.
TekkNerd TekkNerd
The Rutgers game was maddening...
Hearing the play by play guy say over and over that Rutgers was running the same play and we never stopped it. I still wonder why Pry didn't do more to help Marve when he was faltering. I don't think most DC to HC guys would let their handpicked protege flame out and hurt his career. I'm not sure where Marve will ultimatly end up, but most FSU fans thought he was a decent Xs and Os coach when there, but bad at recruiting. After his stint at VT I'm not sure he can do either. He was supposedly on some NFL short lists, but I can't see it.
H
Happy Dog
Good question!
I honestly thought at some point that Pry would fire or demote Marve and take over. It's what I would have done. Pry did a great job at Penn State. He knows defense. What I don't understand is how that defense got so sideways and he didn't step in do something.
reestuart reestuart
Yeah, VT didn't look like they could stop anything at times. APR was
about the only thing that stopped any opposing offense.
BG Hokie BG Hokie
Peebles had a very strong season too. LB play was atrocious.
reestuart reestuart
In several games, it didn't look like there was any defender in the middle
of the field. LB or safeties. Cuse (I think I'm remembering the end correctly) moved it straight down the field because they were playing 11 on 4.
H

Only if someone wasn't so out of position they were in his way

BG Hokie BG Hokie
Expand on that if you're capable. What do you disagree with that I've said?
What "cool aid" am I drinking considering I know and have expressed that it's extremely unlikely Pry isn't deservedly fired within the next two years. I want to see if you can put together a post with more than one complete sentence expressing yourself, I have my doubts.

Interesting, hardly anyone thinks we beat Shane, I wonder if team does too?
BG Hokie BG Hokie
Pry, in my opinion, generally has his players motivated to play. I don't
think our game plans and technical coaching have been up to snuff to maximize chances of winning BUT I think the coaches have our players mentally engaged. I have never seen signs of quit from the Pry teams. With that said, I don't think our opinion re: the likely outcome in our opener with USC-East means anything with respect to the player's opinions.

I question their stamina in the 4th quarter, but hopefully Jared fixes that

Not likely. Vandy 13 returning starters...
South Carolina is almost a forgone conclusion. Shane has got that program on a firm foundation. They'd be ACC favorites every year right now. Pry starting over in year 4. L. 0-1 Vandy also knows what they're doing and will play with confidence. I really dont see us beating anybody with a real pulse this year. We may win a pillow fight here or there. L. 0-2 Thats what I see right now. Maybe we will get a surPRYse.

7 wins would be a disaster..
The reason, 7 wins will not lead to any change but at the same time we will be stuck in mediocrity. As an alumni and fan I either want 8-4 or 4-8 because if we are not winning at least 8 games this many years in the the tenure it’s time for a reset anyway
BG Hokie BG Hokie
LOL, 7 wins is a disaster but 8-4 is a success. Most illogical thing I've
seen on the internet in May of 2025.
hokiepro hokiepro OP
Not based on schedule it’s not
USCe, Vandy, At NCSU, at GT, Miami, UL, At FSU Going 7-5 means winning 2 of those plus unbeaten vs ODU, Wofford, Wake, Cal, UVa If we win 3 of that top group that’s pretty good IMO…which would be 8. ** Edited by hokiepro at 5/28/2025, 1:22:13 PM

I don't know if we will be better record wise but I like Montgomery calling
plays better than Bowen. That's the only small glimmer of hope I almost have.
H

Defense got a much bigger coordinator upgrade
That's not minimizing the upgrade in Monty, but Bowen was at least mediocre and actually had some really good games. Marve was so abysmally bad.....my golden retriever would have been an upgrade. There is no way Siefkes is worse and could potentially be an massive upgrade.
kingofcassell kingofcassell
i like Montgomery too. I feel like he'll have a better feel for end of game
situations and time management. however, I'm not sure we have a QB1 to suit his offense. will be interesting to watch.

Maybe we can get a split but not expecting it.
Three scenarios: First we lose to South Carolina by two touchdowns and lose a heartbreaker to Vandy. Second. We lose to South Carolina by 14 but rally to beat Vandy in a close one. Third. We stun South Carolina in a last minute win but Vandy beats us for the second year in a row. My brain tells me we go 0-2 in scenario 1. My heart says scenario 2 makes us 1-1.
Zanderhokie Zanderhokie
I’m feeling like Scenario 2 is the most likely at this point
Don’t see us having enough talent to stick with South Carolina, though they are a team notorious for being slow out of the gate. Vandy needed overtime to beat us in Nashville last year. Home opener in Blacksburg, possible night game, rowdy Hokies crowd, I just don’t see it going that smoothly for the Commodores in that game. We’re gonna beat them.

What about winning both?

0-2 looks probable. UCS-e sure L, Vandy w/ QB will be tough, can we score?
hokiepro hokiepro OP
Can we score? We will have a good QB with experience
We have a stud WR (Greene) and TE Gosnell with young explosive guys stepping up. I think if the first 5 of the OL stays relatively healthy Rimac, Altuner, Meadows, Garrett plus one more…they’ll be good enough. Montgomery will spread the ball around and mitigate OL issues. Question I have is…will our edge play and secondary prevent big plays
BG Hokie BG Hokie
Is Greene really a stud? He's shown promise, for sure but I think the odds
are that he's no stud. Will be happy to be wrong on this one, obviously.
V
VTCALS72
Truthfully, we have no way of knowing what "should be" a winnable game
At this point can we even do a semi accurate analysis on position by position matchups? And we know USCe and Vandy have the ability to quickly spend more on players than we can.

We had a pretty good idea last season, but this season is still a mystery.

Yeah. And it's not like S.Car and Vandy are even SEC powerhouses.
VT has a pretty standard 2025 P4 schedule.
kingofcassell kingofcassell
If we start 0-2, JC Price could be a 2x interim head coach
However, I could see us upsetting USC in Atlanta and then losing at home to Vandy. Would be typical VT. Pavia and Vanderbilt are tough if you don’t get the lead early - like Paul Johnson’s GT teams - they run the ball, go for it on 4th down, shorten the game. And if you get behind early, it’s going to be a long day. ** Edited by kingofcassell at 5/25/2025, 1:17:40 PM

I would be surprised if Pry's leash wasn't a mile and a half long. I'd say
the odds of an 0-2 start leading to Pry's week 3 firing are about as good as Whit Babcock calling a presser tomorrow to announce he is leaving voluntarily due to non-performance.

Buyout too high still probably.
Not sure how a coach who was never a head coach gets a 6 year deal right out of the gate, but whatever. Hopefully he will prove to be a late bloomer and start winning big games soon and we won't have to worry about it.
Zanderhokie Zanderhokie
Either way, we won’t have to worry about it.
Either Pry starts finally winning big games this season and gets extended, or keeps right on losing them and gets canned after the season. No matter what, this is a make or break year for Pry.

V
VPI_1998
2 of the 3 possible outcomes will cause most to go bananas for different
reasons. 2-0 or 0-2. I worry about South Carolina's athletes and Vanderbilt's coaching. Both appear to have an advantage over VT in these departments - although the new OC and DC hires could be a wildcard to offset these advantages.

Beating SC would be a stretch but we do have one advantage. We generally
know what to prepare for. With a new OC and DC they don’t know as much.

Yes, that makes for one of our best chances IMO. They really have very
