Kenny Pickett and Malik willis as the 1st round qb’s today?
We need to get back to developing NFL caliber QBs

Kenny Picket: 738th nationally, 33rd pro-style QB
Malik Willis: 368th nationally, 21st athlete
247Sports really knocked it out of the park with those evaluations. Clearly, they know what they're doing over there and are for sure not a bunch of monkeys throwing darts at random names on the wall.

I never thought Pickett or Willis looked that good in big games. Liberty played a weak schedule so Willis' stats may be inflated.
I remember reading about Tate Martell bouncing around between various programs. He was the #2 rated dual threat QB and he retired earlier this year after riding the bench at Ohio State, Miami and UNLV. Three of the top 10 dual threat QB's are in the NFL while a few have been bouncing around. #5 was Keytaon Thompson who transferred to UVA and he has displayed great athleticism. Burmeister and Hooker were #10 & #11. It is harder to get playing time as a QB since the coaches usually pick one starter.

There might be a few more, but Wilson is a guy that definitely honed his skills as a QB instead of relying more on his athleticism.

kid well but a lot of these double threat college
kids don’t really do that well on the NFL level.

I know he got sacked something like 51 times this past year.
51 times with his level of athleticism against Liberty's level of competition is insane. Either their OL is really, really bad, which bodes well for them having a bad season this year, or Willis just isn't natural in the pocket and doesn't feel the rush, which doesn't bode well for his NFL career.
We'll see.
We'll see.

Maybe we should have scheduled them in 2021 then
When their oline didn’t suck so much ha ha!

That's my suspicion.
I also think Freeze won't prove to be quite as good a coach as Willis made him look.
Sure, he upset VT with Liberty talent and a first round QB. But Fuente also beat Freeze's bought-and-paid-for Ole Miss team with Memphis talent and a first round QB.
He's a solid coach, IMO, but nothing more.

That seems to be the first stopping point for Hoos who can't make the grade, even with tutors. Liberty seems to get fairly decent "2nd chance talent."

How much money did RG3 get paid to be a terrible nfl player?
Jamarcus Russell?
Pat white?
It’s a long list of busts for the “he can pass and run†guys.
Trying to find the next Michael Vick is an expensive hobby and a great way for NFL gms to get fired.

Plenty of successful dual threats. Plenty of pocket passers who are busts too.

He's going to be a good pro. He's picked up everything that has been thrown at him since this evaluation process started. If he doesn't succeed, it won't be due to personal issues or lack of effort.

Good as his ceiling which is that of a weak starter a team will be looking to replace ASAP. A lot of teams are holding off for the 2023 class too which is supposed to be strong to include the BC QB Jurkovec.

...our prior O-coordinator
Frankly it couldn't get much worse. I've never heard of a QB coach scream at his QB for improvising and making a huge play before. Talk about completely crushing any confidence a QB may have...
Thank goodness he's no longer here!

Sometimes they also laugh it off too.
But you can bet a guy like Saban rips guys a new one when they make a low success decision which happens to work out spectacularly.

throw to. It wasn't like he was yelling for making a bad read... At least according to the article that came after they got canned.

Probably true. But can we replicate the talent?
Ryan Willis was on an NFL roster this past season, yet he finished his VT career third string behind Quincy Patterson, who now splits time for an FCS school.
Hendon Hooker will get drafted for sure, and he seems to have developed more at Tennessee.
So yeah...I think the development will be better. But will we also bring in the God-given talent that Fu and Cornelsen got at QB? Time will tell. Say what you want, but guys like Willis and Hooker were excellent talents, and Patterson certainly had the physical ability as well.

Should Corny (was he also the QB coach) or Fuente have been responsible for improving players like Hooker and Willis? When they played here, I was not a huge fan of either, but maybe it was coaching. The things I remember about Hooker is he fell flat when we needed a big play and/or VT was losing. I know the UVA game we lost, and a couple of other losses, he completely fell apart at the end.
(In response to this post by Chris Coleman)
Position coach, ultimately.
Fu was a good coach. Remember, he kept going around to different parts of the team and helping out. When he started working with the defense, they got better. Then he left the defense to work with the offense, and the offensive improved and defense got worse. Whatever he decided to coach did improve, but unfortunately one man can't do everything.
His main issue is that he didn't have enough quality coaches around him by the end of his tenure. I'm sure the QBs would have developed better if that were his primary focus, but as a head coach, it can't be.

“Expected Outcomes He used that term a lot especially wrt to Willis. My criticism is that they were too concerned with making the QB conform to their style instead of designing the offense to maximize the talents of their players. Willis was/is a talented kid but they tried to make him something he wasn’t. And he got worse because of it.
Also, considering the QB is only the most important position on the field-every head coach has to prioritize their QB focus to some extent especially an offensive minded coach like Fuente. Saying he didn’t have time seems like a cop out.

Assisted in his downfall. As your post, and previous comments, mention, I do agree that Fu could coach. To me his less than engaging personality seemed to alienated the fan base, ex-players, and HS coaches throughout VA. I never sat in a recruits home with him, so I won’t judge how he was with VT hopefuls. I’m not saying all great coaches have pizazz, but if your not winning games…

his family (maybe Shibest). His game was not seen as the dual-threat VT wanted. Hooker
getting passed by Clemson of Trevor Lawrence fame is what got VT's attention. I am not sure the Whisperer & Corn were that astute for 1st-level QB talent. 2nd level being transfers. Too RPO focused.

Once that happens, we'll start getting more QB (and every other position) talent.
Winning solves everything.
Now if we continually go 6-6 over the next several years, well...

revenue level, then you really have to feel for QP who quit engineering so he could take an easy major to devote his time to being a QB under our "development."

Have any VT footballers ever majored in engineering?
kinda feel like QP's eyes were bigger than his stomach, so to speak

VT FB does have a bunch of guys in Pamplin. 3 out of 4 Fuller brothers were in Pamplin. So were Danny Coale, Antone Exum, Eric Gallo and Ryan Willis.

Rusty Pendelton was linebacker, I played baseball with him in high school. He had three degrees before he left VT Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics and finally a MBA. My roommates and I ran into him first semester and he told us his schedule with football and having tried engineering my freshman year as just a student, it almost gave me a headache. He also had the ESPN hit year on a kick return and we got see him intercept a pass in Atlanta against National Champ GT.
