If only didn't have to rush the shot, during that well designed end of regulation play. If he had made it, we go to OT, and who knows what happens from there.

Main action is a backscreen on the baseline on the left side of the lane set by Kidd for Cattoor breaking along the baseline from the right wing to pop out of the left wing as the first option. Pedulla, dribbling from the point to the right wing reverses the ball to Rice up top. Rice's options are 1 - Cattoor on the wing, 2 - Kidd under the basket, 3 - penetrate the lane. Nickel is in the right corner. He and Pedulla stretch the defense to give Rice room to drive into the lane and are 4th and 5th kickout options. If Rice takes the shot, it's probably a pull up jumper, not a full drive to the basket. Ideally, you'd have Cattoor shoot with enough time to get a put back if needed. Rice driving into the lane would only give you time for one shot from him, Pedulla or Nickel. My thinking is: Cattoor is your "best" shooter and most experienced player, Kidd is your best offensive post up player, Rice is a good playmaker and has sufficient size if his shot from the lane is contested. Pedulla and Nickel are great catch and shoot shooters.

Rice brings the ball down the slot with Pedulla sprinting to the ball side corner. Cattoor in the opposite corner, Nickel in the opposite slot, and Beran on the opposite block. Beran flashes to the ball side mid post before turning to screen for Cattoor racing baseline to ball side. Simultaneously, Pedulla lifts for a possible dribble handoff from Rice. Rice has the option of handing off to Pedulla or faking the handoff. Either way Pedulla or Rice attacks the lane from the slot with the other rotating to fill the top of the key after the driver clears. Beran has slid to the short corner/dunkers spot opposite after his screen. Nickel fills the corner on the drive. The driver, either Pedulla or Rice, now has the option to attack for a layup or, if that’s taken away, read where the help defense comes from for either a ball side corner three from Cattoor, a rotation three from the top from the other guard (Pedulla or Rice), an opposite corner three from a filling Nickel, or a dump down to Beran for a dunk. In theory, the defense is going to struggle to cover the shooters and the driver. On the side opposite Pedulla double screen by Nickel and Kidd to support Catoor coming off that screen. Nickel releases to the other corner post screen. Rice has the choice of driving and passing. If it's a pass to Pedulla, Kidd becomes an option down low. Catoor replaces Rice at the top of the key. Pedulla has options to shoot, pass to Kidd, or back to the top of the key to Catoor. Who then has all the options Rice did bringing the ball up the court.

Years back in the championship game. Only thing id do diffent is have 2 trailers instead if one. Gives the option to the PG as to who to dish it back to.

He'd seen that play work hundreds of times in practice.

Used to run that play as a staple pf their offense. Any time they brought the ball up the court, if your 4 defender helped cut off any initial drives they would drive it directly at him, then pitch it to the trailing 4 man who could shoot very well. It was infuriating

Have 3-4 players congregate near bench (with ball) and concot a huge argument making the defense off-guard thinking a timeout is coming or that the play is dead. Have 1-2 players outside of the argument in a relaxed pose sneakily looking for an open spot. Player with ball’s first option is one of those players. Second option is a fast huddle break. If that doesn’t work you run a standard set.

They have a player pick up the ball and act like he's stuck...all other players make a line to the ball and lift up past the 3 pt line... ...then one of them streaks back door for an open layup ** Edited by GCHokie34 at 10/24/2023, 11:14:52 AM

Rice, Catoor, Nickel, Beran. I've got Catoor with continuing baseline cuts and Beran, Nickel as the screeners. Pedulla, Rice screening for each other up top. Most people would want Catoor to take the shot, and the other team is going to defend the hell out of him coming off those screens. One thing that's almost sure to happen is one of the guards will try help on Catoor over the top on the wing (they think he's my first option, and for good reason). That's when we've got to move the ball to our 1 or 2, who will drive it hard into the gap that now exists. This is what we worked for in this possession. Both Pedulla and Rice are good with the ball in their hands. If no one stops then they go and score or get fouled. I love this option and we've got to have this action at least once during the possession or we failed. If the backside post rotates to stop the drive then it's an easy kick to either Nickel or Beran for a WIDE open 3. That's our second best option. Meanwhile the other guard rotates to the top as they should. If their man helps, we kick to them and i INSIST they look to drive in the other gap that now exists. If they get to the goal that's our 3rd best option. So we've got 2 chances at a drive to the goal. Get fouled or score. If they get stopped, Catoor is now at the top on rotation with a wide open look, or the other post is wide open on the weak side. The driver kicks to whomever is the one with the open shot. If we've gone through at least one full rotation (remember we prefer a drive by Pedulla or Rice as #1 and #3 options) and Catoor has an open look off the baseline curl then he takes it. If the other team has managed to defend it and the clock is 5 or less then I want whichever of Pedulla or Rice to drive it anyway and force one of the actions: a) if no weak side help comes then take it to the rim; b) fire it to the weak side post Beran or Nickel if their man helps and they take the 3. No way that will be covered so he’s likely to be wide open. One guy crashes the boards and the other three stay a bit deeper for the long rebounds, in the unlikely event the shot doesn’t go in.

It didn’t end the way we hope, but the play at the end of the Duke game in the Sweet 16 when Ahmed Hill had an open look on a catch and shoot. What all went into making that play work as far as getting Med a look and was it as good as I thought it was? (Result notwithstanding). It seems like we had seen some variation of that play a couple times. If we need a two and are inbounding under our basket I like that look, assuming our current personnel fit that scheme.

But I liked how Buzz drew it up It has to be with a small amount of time on the clock because this draws defenders closer to their man. If there are 10+ seconds, you're OK letting the ball come in, you just want to protect any actions after that. But if it's 1 or 2 seconds, then defenders are going to play the passing lanes tighter to make you try and contested shot going away from the basket. That knowledge is key to making the play work. You run Ty Outlaw (a great shooter) to the corner which occupies his defender. NAW acts as the outlet valve at the top of the key, but he really just wants to pull his defender closer to the sideline. KBJ sets a dummy screen on Ahmed Hill, the only reason for the screen is to make them switch OR to make them late and force them to defend Hill on his hip rather than his chest. After the first screen pointed to the corner (already occupied), Hill wraps around and heads back to the rim. At this point KBJ doesn't need to set a screen for Hill (Hill's defender is already late due to the first screen) so he sets a screen on his own defender, the only player left who can make a play on the ball. You toss the ball right in the gap created between KBJ and Hill and its an easy look. He simply missed it. The way to combat this is to close switch everything. Make sure defenders come together and touch before switching, making those gaps more difficult. A little more awareness on Zion's part would have shown Hill wasn't going to the corner since it was already occupied by Outlaw. He would just need to step up into the gap and use his athleticism to deflect the ball. If it was a matter of Ahmed Hill vs Zion Williamson to jump and get the ball, I like Zion's chances. But because the initial action made him late, it's a good look to win the game

Plant Nickel in the weak side corner and look to collapse the defense and get him the ball. If the defense rotates down I’d be comfortable with him attacking the basket or swinging the ball back up to Cattoor on the wing for an open look. Have to fight over the screen if Pedulla or Rice have the ball so if I need just one bucket I’m running that. Probably can’t get away with it twice ** Edited by soflahokie at 10/23/2023, 8:36:52 PM
