Was nervous this was just Camden's signature.
Question now is, is Basile athletic enough to play the 4 and someone like Osun be signed to play the 5.

Whew! i think this one is bigger than many of us realize
we can now put a starting 5 on the court that can spread a defense and really open the court. 1-5 will be able to fill it up from deep. VT will definitely be fun to watch. How good , we'll see.
Now time to shore up some depth.
NC Hoke NC Hoke
Huge.
This is the most critical piece for us to be be a contender next season. Still need to backfill that 4 or bring back Mutts, but this is a giant gaping hole filled by CMY.

This will also be the year we need to bring Kidd along so that he can provide depth and develop for when Basile leaves. Basile has 2 years of eligibility but it would probably be a mistake to assume any more than one year before he goes pro.

ISU mod just confirmed Basile to VT too.

Yep, its Basile
Can now focus on a second big, Mutts/replacement and (hopefully) a big wing

Perfect!

Big commitment. We really needed to add a big that can help immediately.

This is huge!

So, he does have two years of eligibility left?
G
GCHokie34
Yes

Appears we will be not a good shooting team, but an ELITE shooting team
So the questions are:

1. Can Basile draw double teams?
2. How do we look on defense?
3. Can we stay healthy?

Would be interested on opinions on the first two questions.

We were the definition of elite last year even if it didnt feel like it
Falling flat against good teams does that to you, but we shot like 39% as a team
vtbball80 vtbball80
Last year's team was 3rd best in the country for 3 pt%...
And yes, next year's team should shoot it even better

Awesome news! Obviously fills a huge need. It's a good day!

Here are his highlights against NC State...
Dropped 23 on the Pack.

Love that he can go to both his right and left side inside - same as Aluma.

Looks much thicker than 225.
Was hoping he was athletic enough to play 4 and bring in Osun to play 5. Not so sure I see it. Looks much slower than Mutts.

Really like the way he can be physical backing down a big in the lane, in
addition to having an outside shot. Great get!

Plays a lot like Aluma

Yuge pick up!! Outside and inside

Could a portal 4 allow Camden to be a big wing?
AirborneHokie96 AirborneHokie96
Does he have the lateral quickness to defend the perimeter
against a 3?

Great news. Thank you GC. You probably already posted it. But what’s you
thoughts on Basile? If you have time and I would assume he is expected to come in and play?
G
GCHokie34
Oh yeah he'll be the starter at the 5 spot...
Very good offensively. Shot 40+% 2 seasons ago from 3. As close to a 1:1 replacement of Aluma as you can get. He will fit in very well.
C
chagerma
Not enough athleticism for the 4? Looks thick.
HeisenBurg13 HeisenBurg13
I got Aluma vibes from watching the highlight video against NC St.
Just hoping he is proficient on the defensive end too.

Since replacing Mutts is next on the agenda, if we strike out ...
What would be the lineup:
Pedulla
Cattoor
Maddox
???
Basile

??? = Camden, Kidd, Buchanan, Rice, Collins, Wessler

Choice of big lineup (Kidd, Wessler), semi big lineup (Camden, Buchanan), small lineup (Rice, Collins).

I appears, from watching his teams, Coach Young would go with semi big lineup with everyone else filling in other available free minutes. Camden with Buchanan backing him up.

I’m going to show my ignorance of the numbers used for spots or positions
in the court. But I’d rather ask and learn than not ask and be in the dark when I hear people say he’s a 2 or 3 etc etc. I would assume a 5 is the center position? Thanks
G
GCHokie34
Yep
1 - PG
2 - SG
3 - SF
4 - PF
5 - C

2s and 3s are the exact same under MY, thus why having someone who can play 3 and 4 is more difficukt because youre asking someone to guard 2s, 3s, and 4s. 2s and 3s can vary in skill and athleticism across basketball, so you may be able to defend **some** 2s, but not others. This means certain lineups and teams they would play primarily the 4 and others they could move to the perimeter (2, 3 and 4)
SCHokie1103 SCHokie1103
Great help GC. I screen shotted your reply so I can learn it and have a
better understanding of basketball talk when you guys start using numbers😎

A perfect Coach Young team would be interchangable parts
Players who can play 2 spots become matchup problems for the other team's defense. But, when we are on defense, would we be exposed to matchups also. That's the chess match between coaches. Who blinks first?
R
RJHokie
That’s correct.
