he just wasn't going to get that much PT here if he stayed. He's a good player, just not as good as those three.
He was also the recipient of a lot of abuse on this board and elsewhere. There were plenty of VT fans who certainly didn't show much "loyalty" to him.

Loyalty works both ways.
I wish him the best. 🤔

He saw the writing on the wall. Was likely getting passed by in talent and playing time. This is the new normal. You can dislike the state of affairs, but don't hate on the players. It's a bad look.

It does when your fans tag you and your family to tweets
and trash you because you are in a slump.
Sometimes, you need a clean break to somewhere new in order to cut some of the stress and negativity.

I don't think Northeastern US / New England fans are known for being forgiving & polite. Although he might skate by under the radar as a lower profile player at UConn while the starters get the lambasting.
Hopefully he plays well and consistently to wrap up his college career

Listen, no one should harass a college kid trying his best.
But, this is big boy basketball, and you gotta take the bad with the good.
And, unfortunately the Bad is everywhere.

The Huskies have won 4 NCAA Tournament Championships (1999, 2004, 2011 and
2014)
That's big boy basketball. You go there to win National Titles because they have won National Titles.
We are VT. We sell "Family" because we do not have any National Titles in any sport including basketball or football.
I get what you are saying about "Everyone does it" as an excuse for a$$hole fans who have never played the game bagging on student athletes and their families...but we are talking about a hand of poker. In a game of 5 card, we are already down a card or two because we haven't won a national title or really been relevant for very long. We do play in a basketball conference and have nice facilities but when you are already at a disadvantage, why create self-inflicted wounds by acting like a 9 year?

lot. The kid is making the best decision for himself and his family for whatever factors, but I highly doubt fan behavior would even make top 3 factors in this decision. He looks like a very mature kid to me.
(In response to this post by AirborneHokie96)
No. I am not just throwing out rumors.
It wasn't just message board posts but social media (twitter and IG) plus heckling at the games.
Some of the stuff was viewed by the family as way over the top. While there is an expectation among players and parents that there will be negativity at times, going to Twitter/ IG and tagging players on your negative comments, or someone else’s negative comments, isn’t the move. That's just trying to be an a$$hole. When it is the same groups of folks doing it over and over, that borderlines on harassment.

But I was reading on these boards that the reason he wanted to leave was our brutal fans.
Not to play for a national championship.
When I hear folks blaming fans, I just always hope that's not the real reason.
My guess is there are quite a few reasons. A few bad fans are probably one of them.
But if the primary reason is some idiots on social media, then someone should help the kid.

We can control our own behavior. We can control how we treat others. We don't have to attack one of our "own" over a basketball game.

So are the coaches the reason? Sounds like that's what you're saying. And he should leave if our coaches aren't there for him.
But the fans didn't create this "family" branding. Every school says that. That's a schools pitch. So if a few morons don't buy in to the branding, that shouldn't be shocking.
I have no idea what any of this is about. I have no info. I have zero social media presence, so I don't know what VT fans said online.
The reason many of us aren't involved in that is because it is a cesspool. It serves absolutely no purpose other than to give idiots a voice. We all have a choice to stay away if want. That would/should be the suggestion to players. If it causes that much angst.
I suspect there's other factors involved, but fan behavior should not be the primary.
Has he come out publicly saying that?
Did Coach Young come to his defense?
Does he feel he wasn't utilized properly, and so he feels additional anger at the fans?
I'll step away. I've already spent too much time on something I don't really care much about.
Good luck to him.
I'll now follow his career more closely.

I got two siblings
Not sure what my brother or sister have to do with it but ok. Both graduated from VT as well.
And no, the coaches are not the reason. But the family and player were getting tagged in posts on social media and comments were being made to him at games by our "fans" to be extremely negative and sometimes viscous. The guy was giving 100% effort. The guy has shown that he can do better and was in a slump at times shooting but still played great team and individual defense as well as hit his free throws. So he definitely did not deserve the BS from Hokie fans.
It's one thing to say "I like Maddux". It's another thing to say things like "Alleyne is trash, sucks, deserves to be on a D3 school, is Coach MY's favorite" and worse. It's even worse than that to tag a players family in those posts as well.

anyone else. Without data I would suggest that we are actually above average in terms of athlete friendliness, just because I know the kind of people that attend VT. We can talk about "being better" but it is just talk. There is no way to enforce the idea of treating our athletes "better". It is what it is and it is out of our control.
So, the only way to fix the problem is for the athletes themselves to stop paying attention. If an athlete is reading message boards then that person needs to be counseled by an adult about the ways of the world. If an athlete gets his/her feelings hurt by fans being fans, they have a lot to learn about life and a change of scenery will not help them.

As usual, you deflect
I am not talking about why he chose VT.
I am talking about a toxic fanbase on social media causing a kid (who was starting for the team he originally committed to out of HS) to transfer.
So, it sounds like Alleyne and Wells experienced the same level of toxicity which made the decision to transfer fairly easy.

That's rich stuff. Do you think this history isn't searchable?
Back on 2/26 you want Maddox to start and get more minutes, but you don't think Alleyne has the right to move on if he feels he can get more minutes/start/PT elsewhere?
Some nerve asking for Alleyne's loyalty now given your history. -1 for you if I could...

It's about a young man deciding what's best for him.
He didn't start all those games for Tech due to loyalty, he started because the coaching staff determined that's what would best help the team.

Surprised he's jumping ship to sit on the bench if that's true, he would've had a larger role in Blacksburg in a system much better suited to his game. They think he's content to be option #4 on the floor at any given time which is the opposite of true.
UCONN is a team that runs out a Villanova-esque lineup but plays a lot more like UNC under Roy Williams. They crash the offensive boards, pass well inside, and take the vast majority of their attempts from inside the arc.
Alleyne historically has taken 45% of his shots from beyond the arc, and his FG% from 2 is actually the same as it is from 3 at 38% which is abysmal from inside (last on the team in 2022).
