Posting History (116)

That spin fade is basically undefendable

Some teams will hack her from behind, which is probably the only way to affect the shot. But even that results in a foul more often than not. It's easy to criticize Liz for not ever jumping or sprinting, but she knows her limitations and has sculpted her game around her strengths.

Most WNBA players make less than a medical resident

If that is indeed the plan, it probably has more to do with how unappealing the WNBA is rather than her drive to become a physician. She plays in front of packed arenas against the biggest names in the sport right now. WNBA would just be a grind without doing anything to elevate her status in the sport. Not to mention that her style of play doesn't jive with the physical, athletic post play of the WNBA.

Blue shirt was unimpressed.

I was jumping and yelling like I did as a student witnessing Wayne Ward's block decades ago. It was my daughters' first time witnessing a 'great Hokie sports moment' in-person, and my eldest is still talking about it. My youngest reacted like grandpa in the vid, but we'll get through to her yet. ** Edited by The_Phew at 1/8/2024, 7:23:36 AM

Eddie clearly understands that ACCN is a clown show not worthy of...

...his professionalism. So it doesn't bother me when other ACCN analysts make the same decision.

There are definitely some rational Hoos out there.

56 Likes and counting, many of which are surely from Hokies, but still. ** Edited by The_Phew at 11/29/2023, 2:50:55 PM

Aluma didn't do much at Wofford

Not to say Beran will achieve what Aluma did, but MY knows how to cultivate post players. ** Edited by The_Phew at 11/25/2023, 8:29:07 AM

Heck, Liberty may beat them to him.

An anti-Catholic homophobe coach? They'll be lining up in Lynchburg to watch him in action (from the corner).

That would cost more than $1mil in Bud Light

It's probably not physically possible for Huggy Bear to get drunk on Bud Light.

They'll just give Huggy a Village People album and a communion cracker

....to check that box. It's easier for me to imagine him dancing along to 'YMCA' while shoving crackers in his face than taking notes in a sensitivity training class. ** Edited by The_Phew at 5/11/2023, 10:58:31 AM

I just can't wait for Nickel to succeed in the NBA.

Just for the play-by-play announcer to declare "Nickel's been droppin' dimes all quarter!"

More like the converse.

The Final Four averages significantly more viewers per game than the NBA Finals. The best college players earning less than NBA players is more of a head-scratcher.

Hopefully our wings aren't seemingly afraid to take 3s next season

When Cattoor is defending the opposing team's best player, he seems hesitant to pull the trigger on offense (tired?). Maddox had even worse shooting confidence issues, and Rice was a frosh that missed most of the season. I expect way better scoring from our wings next season to make up for any dropoff up front.

I hope the Waco bit is just trolling.

Pretty classless trolling if you ask me, but LSU has never been accused of being 'classy'. ** Edited by The_Phew at 3/30/2023, 4:40:41 PM

The Hokie ComplexTM

Even when our teams prove to the world that we 'belong', as fans we still seek out examples of perceived disrespect in the media. All Final Four teams in both men's and women's basketball receive MASSIVE amounts of exposure in the media and 'culture'. Each team has fascinating story lines and players. Here in the Commonwealth, VT's tourney run is definitively the hottest topic in all of sports, which is amazing for any women's sport. We should relish this moment and not get green with envy any time an article about LSU, USC, or Iowa is written.

Empathy is a superpower.

Coach Brooks is facing the biggest moment of his career, and is surely under immense stress game planning for LSU. Yet despite all that, he managed to be aware of a beat writer's professional ups and downs and express his congratulations. It's probably the same trait that makes Coach Brooks so respected by his players.

If the leagues thought better refs would increase viewership...

...they'd hire full time refs, pay them well, and make them accountable. But the leagues clearly don't think good vs. bad refs make a difference to their bottom line, so they cut corners. Personally, I think refs (in EVERY NCAA sport) should work for outside contractors that are paid proportional to the quality of the officiating (as judged by the coaching staffs of all the teams). This system where the refs work for leagues is an inherent conflict of interest. ** Edited by The_Phew at 3/30/2023, 12:25:03 PM

I used to prefer Five Guys, until Five Guys nearly tripled their prices

At $15 for a burger, I'd rather go to a table service burger joint and get a better burger for less $. Five Guys made a name for themselves offering burgers that were WAY better than fast food for only a few dollars more. Now that they charge more than the specialty table service burger restaurants, they don't bring anything to the table. At least In-N-Out has remained reasonably-priced. ** Edited by The_Phew at 3/30/2023, 9:06:57 AM

Liz basically took herself out of the game halfway through 3rd

I don't think she attempted another shot after that point, and she didn't do anything on D except stand in paint with arms up. I'm worried that lack of intensity will carry over into SDSU game. I'm surprised Kenny didn't just rest her if she was going to play timidly once we got a big lead anyway.

Esteemed women's basketball analyst Mark Packer, huh?

I'll give Packer credit; he must have some dirt on the ACC brass to be hosting the ACCN's only studio show FROM HIS BASEMENT despite every ACC campus building world-class production studios to satisfy the ACCN contract.

Oh, I don't blame him for leaving.

But MY replacing him with a long-time prep coaching legend (for obvious recruiting reasons) instead of another defensive specialist was probably a big mistake.

You're right re:Cattoor, but Frazier's bio at VT mostly bragged about:

Bede and Aluma (a 1 and a 5). So clearly assistant responsibilities at VT weren't solely along positional lines. I assumed Frazier's role was mostly scouting and defense, based on his bio (former B1G all-defensive team as a player). I always forget that Cattoor never played at Wofford, just committed there. ** Edited by The_Phew at 2/27/2023, 1:14:44 PM

I'd argue that the loss of Chester Frazier may have been the real culprit

Yeah, I know he's been gone for two seasons, but the starters last year (minus Storm) had been mostly developed defensively under his tutelage. After years of playing merely above-average defense at Wofford, MY's defensive acumen was one of the biggest risks when he was hired (along with recruiting). But with Frazier's coaching, VT played 'tenacious D'. Aluma and Cattoor were nothing special defensively at Wofford, but both seriously amped up their defensive game with Frazier's coaching. Our staff clearly needs a 'defensive specialist', and I'm not sure we have one anymore. ** Edited by The_Phew at 2/27/2023, 11:10:27 AM

The anthem video was a transparent plea to big boosters in TX

There were probably TAMU boosters that needed to call their doctor due to an erection lasting more than four hours after seeing that video. Buzz didn't have some deep-seated respect for veterans or anything like that; if he did, perhaps his video about honoring veterans (that included at least a dozen actual veterans) might have included, like, maybe, a SINGLE FRIGGIN' WORD spoken by one of said veterans?

PSU @51 is the one to watch this season

They are our best shot at a Q1 OOC win this season, if they can creep into the top 50 (which probably just requires they do better than .500 in the B1G). ** Edited by The_Phew at 12/5/2022, 11:17:08 AM

Maybe as the halftime entertainment as a motivational speaker.

Because there's a good chance TAMU fires him after this season. ** Edited by The_Phew at 11/28/2022, 7:03:56 PM

Dunno why every bball player doesn't wear ankle braces all the time

I wear them every time I play tennis, and you don't even notice they're there (except for not having to worry about ankle rolls).

First VT free throws at 3.5 mins to go in first half

I'm not watching, but that sounds like the officials have decided this tournament shall be a playground brawl.

MY's system is great for catch n' shooting from the corners

Mutts at the top of the key and Basile underneath is a recipe for a LOT of open 3s. For whatever reason, that hasn't been a focus in the two games so far this season. But I guarantee we'll have ACC/big OOC games where Cattoor and/or Maddox light it up from the corners.

I don't think there is a 'basketball thing' Justyn Mutts can't do well

Yeah, yeah, the missed free throws last night were disappointing. But he's shot FTs as high as 73.5% for a season, so he clearly CAN hit FTs, just doesn't always actually do it. Besides, it's usually the stoic players that are the best FT shooters. Mutts' intensity/emotions are part of what make him such a good leader, and we wouldn't want to give that up. ** Edited by The_Phew at 11/11/2022, 1:28:27 PM

Students were big fans of #42 for Lehigh, JT Tan

They went nuts every time he got the ball (in a positive way, not in a Greivis Vasquez kind of way). I have to admit his 'truffle shuffle' physique was a fun contrast to the physical freaks that dominate college bball.

Let me get this straight:

I can pay Justyn Mutts $10k to participate in an unsanctioned 'NIL H-O-R-S-E Tournament' in my driveway, and that is totally permissible under NCAA rules. But if an NCAA basketball player participates in an actual tourney (unpaid, I may add) to further their post-college career, that's where they draw the line? ** Edited by The_Phew at 11/5/2022, 8:54:08 AM

In tennis you can call a 'hindrance' and replay the point

If an opponent does pretty much anything that's outside 'normal tennis' things'. Not that that stops Nick Kyrgios from doing all manner of things that no one else has ever attempted on a tennis court.

Did VT WBB scrimmage JMU this weekend?

I saw the entire JMU WBB team at First Watch in Cburg on Sunday morning. Can't imagine any other reason they'd be in Cburg; they wouldn't go on the road to scrimmage Radford, right? ** Edited by The_Phew at 10/24/2022, 12:59:00 PM

CC posts about this stuff from time to time

If I remember correctly, a one-and-done lottery pick (like Zion) is in the $250k-$1mil range, top 25ish guys are $100k+, top50ish guys are $75kish. Below that, recruits still get paid, but other considerations may start to become more important. None of that means that Rice is getting anything from VT staff and/or boosters, I'm just saying that's what he's 'worth' on the open market, probably more than that with NIL. ** Edited by The_Phew at 10/18/2022, 7:17:20 PM
