Plenty of errors dumped by both sides but managed to find a small little zone last couple points of the ten point "3rd set" tiebreaker. Out-dueled a guy at the net by slicing it barely over the net cord, then a perfectly executed lob over the other guy at net on the next point. Not bad for a guy who didn't sleep well last night. No doubt one of the top 20 million sporting events in the world for today. People don't seem to realize how pungent it is either. Kids sitting on the other side of the field don't realize how strong the smell is here over on the sidewalk. I should add, it's sort OK if you're an old guy at a music festival and you only need to walk back to your tent to crash out. The thing with the kid is obnoxious. stayed near my phone all day just in case 1) air conditioning guy to show up between 2-6 and 2) See if our make-up tennis league match gets rained out again. Air-conditioning guy made me nervous, if he didn't show up by 6 I was going to re-schedule. He showed up at 5:50. Quickly diagnosed the problem, dead fan, had another one in the truck me: can you get it in by 7:30 (time I needed to leave by) Should be able to do that. Got to my league make-up tennis match we lost 3-6, 5-7 as ganga drifted across the tennis courts. These are the worst courts in the area, final glide path for planes headed to BWI overhead, pickle-ball on one side, pretty good slope so that all the balls roll down two other courts w/a good start, sun reflects off of parked car windshields in the morning, service trucks backing beeps by adjacent low density strip mall, and now marijuana in the air. Although I can't be sure it wasn't one of those movies that were shown once a year on tv. I'm pretty sure it was the first time I sort of got what "music" was and liked the "March of the toy soldiers" and wanted to hear it again even though I didn't/couldn't really follow the plot of the movie.. Before that I was pretty clueless what music was supposed to do. Even now if someone were to ask me what my favorite tunes of all time I would include that even though I don't remember what I liked about it. VT won it so as a reward, they got to host it the next year which might have been '74 and yes, I went over to watch a little. Basically get three lifts, one to get something in, two to do your competitive best and maybe a third to push it a little but. overdo it so interesting to see some guy come no where close to winning but ... competing against himself I guess. I may have pictures of the trophy somewhere. I actually tried to find any trophies. went over to the Merriman Center walked around, even ran into the equipment manager Carlin(?) who didn't know. got sent over to the new Memorial Gym and yes, there were display cases scatterered around (the kind of stuff you don't know what to do with so you put into some hall somewhere) and finally someone suggested that all that stuff was over at a gym over in the shopping area where Kroger is, that is, the owner was somehow connected with that past. Everyone there was clueless of course which they would be I guess even if there were a box of stuff in a closet somewhere.

Had a (tennis) buddy at VT who did his graduate work in something to do with Vitamin C and got a nice letter from Linus Pauling (probably just to encourage young scientists, but still...) that is Pete is still protecting her a little bit as she's just gotten into the business of starting. So you might have expected the Bree/Avery combo the first game*, "our best pitcher" then goes up against LSU etc. etc. 'course when you go to the losers bracket everything gets blown out of the water trying to preserve your pitching so you kind of had to go with Mazz for Akron to preserve the order and having something left for what is a double header today. So, VT's not really in bad shape right now, everyone's pitched half games so - I mean it's not baseball where the pitcher is shot for a few days - so VT's got options, Bree and Avery starting? Mazz in relief? Pete's done a pretty good job managing the pitching. Today will be interesting. * Pete will leave them in as long as he can or was the switch in the S. OK, maybe the coolest? OK, it was the fastest in the 60s...likewise, ridden on the Shinkansen from Aomori prefecture to Tokyo and the Tokaido line from Tokyo to Kyoto and back. That was a while back though, the 80's version of the Shinkansen that looked more like a jet plane nose. I think I've been on the TGV but can't really place it. so yeah, there's always hope but thinking the Amoores are just as embittered here. It would take a lot, starting with time. Whit retiring relieves some of the collective memory on the VT side but yeah, it'll be a long time if ever. Maybe something on the order of Griner returning to Baylor. I just don't see it happening. yeah, I would absolutely have a different opinion now, still Pete said something liked drain the tank a few days ago which I took to mean leave Mazz in there long as possible and she ended up getting a complete game. There were points in the 6th and 7th inning where that was in the gambling zone of leaving her in or bringing someone in relief not named Carrico who you wanted to be fresh the next day. Carrico was left in until she started losing it a little bit (Duke wasted a lot of pitches in the 3rd, was worried about that) then she had some quick innings but one was like three flyouts so they were beginning to see the ball...) I'll stop. I would say FSU did the committee thing, I think mainly so the VT hitters wouldn't get grooved, so a comittee to keep batters off balanced with their two star pitchers. I would guess Pete didn't like what he saw, mainly her energy levels and yeah, went with a fresh pitcher.

A bunch of us drove up to C'ville, Dee Taylor had a trailer attached to his vehicle and explained to the guys at the gate we were with the band. They let us in and literally parked next to the stadium. Things were simpler in those days, I suppose.
