It’s ironic that I am staying at the Grandover in Greensboro which is next to the former ACC offices. If you ever visited them in their prime you would have been very impressed with their grandeur. Now there is a huge for sale sign out front and weeds that have all but covered the Atlantic Coast Conference sign. I thought to myself this conference has truly abandoned their roots.

for all parties involved. The terms being considered have apparently been offered by the expansion candidates and the ball is The ACC's court to approve or reject. The two California schools must know that they will be signing a 13 year GoR, divorcing their major sports from their beloved "Olympic" teams, and probably taking a serious hit in recruiting. The recruiting issue would happen even if they stayed out west and joined The MWC. As for the revenue, it will be interesting to see if they come out ahead of their WSU/OSU brethren who will likely end up in the MWC. The critical objective was to remain in a P-level conference and to qualify for the big, fat football playoff money. They wouldn't get that in The MWC.
Oh, I can just see the sausage being made in these ACC meetings. They will have actual dollar amounts to write on a whiteboard, and it will be difficult to say "no." But some of them have visions beyond $72 million divided fifteen ways. They might not even be swayed by lopsided payments tilted heavily in their favor.
Too close to call.

$3 million more dollars per school isn't going to even begin to close the financial gap between Florida and FSU or between Clemson and USC South. Playing Calford & SMU could also hurt attendance and ticket sales which has been a growing problem for some of the schools in the ACC in recent years. Scheduling could also be an issue when instead of playing Miami in football, your school has to play Cal with a losing record. Instead of playing North Carolina in basketball, your school has to play SMU with a losing record in their small arena. Someone has to play these expansion schools.
If the ACC can't expand with desirable schools, then they are making a big mistake taking undesirable schools because they don't have to share conference distributions with them at least initially. I still can't see any of the no votes being flipped to yes votes.

Do you really think they are going to have a better record in the ACC where the competition is far better.

At least not when you put math to the ESPN proposal as laid out in that article. The 14 present ACC schools will only get $57.6 Million to distribute among themselves from adding Stanford, Cal & SMU. All three must be added to get that $57.6 Million from ESPN.
ESPN is only offering 70% of the yearly payout to each of those incoming schools that the other 14 ACC members are now receiving from ESPN. Stanford & Cal are still going to receive 30% of that 70% payout, that will be $7.2 Million going to each of those two schools. SMU will receive no money from the ACC for 7 years.
You divide $57.6 Million by 14 you get about $4.1 Million additional yearly for each of the present ACC members. That should pay the travel cost for all sports each year competing against the new members. However how that new money will be distributed among the 14 schools is still being negotiated. Probably the stumbling block. FSU probably wants most of it. This deal looks like ESPN is the big winner.

* ESPN stands to gain a lot from adding CA and TX subscriber fees for ACCN programming.
* There was reportedly a contract provision related to adding P5 schools.
* Beyond that, it has already been reported that expansion is only impacting FB, MBB and WBB, that there would be a pool for travel costs, and that the remaining revenue bump was being looked at for a performance based distribution.

Why add them if there is no benefit?
Espn is going to pay for the travel cost separately?

That article clearly states that Cal & Stanford had agreed to take about 30% of a $24 Million share. That 30% of $24 Million is $7.2 Million.
Cal & Stanford are therefore taking $14.4 Million off that $72 Million.
The article mentioned nothing about increased carriage rates on ESPN subscriptions in California & Texas. I would guess ESPN will gladly pocket that.

if it isn't sufficiently profitable, the ACC isn't going to do it.

the commitment to permanently adjust revenue distribution after the expansion schools are getting full shares. Otherwise this arrangement doesn’t make any sense for them. As much as I would love to drive to a VT conference game at SMU, I must say having such a convoluted league seems a bit too familiar and therefore uneasy (think BEFC). I’m also not a big fan of heavy uneven revenue distribution where the rich continue to get richer. We’ll see how that shakes out in the new world of NIL and portal transfers I suppose.

Per the article:
"The ACC would stand to earn about $72 million in new money with the three expansion shares. Cal and Stanford have agreed to each take about 30% of the $24 million share, or roughly $7-10 million. After Cal and Stanford’s share and travel costs are off-set (roughly $1-2 million per school), the ACC stands to earn at least $30 million in revenue to re-distribute"
So, it's closer to $30 million overall.....or about $2 million per school. Even if we assume it's $45 million (and it won't be more than that after Stanford and Cal's cuts and all travel costs are absorbed) then that just $3 million more per school.

Assuming we added 20% of the US population into our footprint by adding those two states. I've seen estimates that in state subs are about $1 a month more. Assuming the subs are distributed evenly (huge assumption), there are between 10 and 14 million subs increasing by $12 per year. So potentially $120m to $168m split with ESPN.
...I actually feel that you should be able to negotiate on that split with ESPN. You're helping them bring in instant revenue as well.

share in that $50mm range.
Small private school, not more than 7th most popular brand in their state. Probably more like 9th, behind OU, etc

If espn was going to pay $300mm for the pac10 (no la schools), I think San Fran metro will be a good move.
Plus the academic association adds some value. Hard to quantify

They are the best academics in the PAC 12. They aren't interested in Big 12, FOX won't pay, but ACC can increase revenue in the middle of this long term contract.

SEC would even think about it, they had to have former high ranking government officials beg for their inclusion. It is not exactly a Katy barn the door we going to the moon add. Academically it is a homerun.

It was FOX that pushed UCLA. B1G didn't want Cal. But it is a rivalry. The SMU thing to me is Texas ACCN subscribers.
They did not entertain the Big 12. We're talking about some of the biggest academic snobs in the United States.

Saw a podcast today with the Wake Forest AD on Ovies & Giulio where WF is already sending the women's field hockey team to Stanford and Cal. Travel works apparently. Good airline prices to Dallas & Sa Francisco.
I wanted WVU and Cincinnati. But NO DICE. Here we go instead.

I'm not sure how much ND has played Cal or SMU. I think we'll deal with the travel and move on. I do think we'll go to 20 down the road. ND may not be part of it and join the B1G along the way.
