SMU now being mentioned
This is great, Jim Phillips and the ACC leadership have officially jumped the shark.

Failure. When Texas and Oklahoma left the Big 12, the ACC could have had its pic of any Big 12 team. The ACC failed to make a move then, but now feels pressured to make a move and take teams that are either lesser or don't make sense geographically or both. I think it says a lot about ACC leadership and the conference's current position when WVU fans are saying they would not want to go to the ACC if they were offered. They prefer the stability of the Big 12 over a spot in the ACC.

I remember the Wishbone Offense and the Pony Express at SMU, Eric Dickerson & Craig James. Great football. SMU was buying new cars for football recruits. SEC schools were doing that just as a beginning. No death penalties for them issued by the NCAA. Ole Miss quickly comes into mind. I guess the NCAA didn't want to create anymore SMU's. The ACC should take Rice too. Then all the old SWC schools will have a P4 home.

But SMU has recently been in the top 25, and they have qualified for Bowl Games in the American. So they are back to respectable.
(In response to this post by WarHog38)
Always thought SMU got a raw deal.
Sure, they were cheating dogs. But their crime was simply being brazen enough to do what the big dogs were doing. They never recovered. Love the 30 for 30 about the Pony Express and SMU Death Penalty. I remember the quote from the guy on the roster of the SMU team post-reinstatement: "We were small, but we were slow." LOL. Classic.

The ACC needs to get a member in Texas to have the extra subscriber revenue. We can wait the 2 years for them to be able to come. the AAC has a 27 month wait, but all others coming from there were able to buy that down to 24 months. SMU would put the ACC in Dallas. TCU will push back on the Big XII taking them, so they should be available. The ACC should take Tulane also if they take SMU IMO.
This really feels like a day late and dollar short. How many years have we been saying here that the ACC needed to expand before everything was picked over?

They are going for the subscribers in the state. Tennessee may have more than Louisiana. This also would bridge the geographic gap some with the west. Memphis would be a state school.

ESPN has the SEC with the underlying ACC and FOX has the B1G with the underlying Big XII.

they don't want to pay all those schools. My best guess is that it will be 4 conferences of 20, with the B12 and ACC being close to equal.

I dropped the F-bomb in a Twitter feed about the BigXII the other day.
I said something to the effect of the Big XII becoming a FEEDER program. A KU fan was quite adamant about this in his denial. So there you have it.
Apparently, the word FEEDER rubs some people the wrong way.
Might only be a matter of time until either the SEC or B1G move into the Southwest (UA or ASU) or the Rockies (Colorado, Utah, BYU) nevertheless.

is some of the Presidents in the ACC or ESPN not willing to pay? I have thought it was ESPN not willing to pay, but good grief could it be the schools that aren't in the Mag 7-8 like Duke and Syracuse? Why the sudden change after FSU started crowing?
PS Talk about being late to the party!!!

Not all of the choices, namely WVU and Cincinnati, which we all were calling for here on TSL. But we knew if the ACC wanted PAC12 teams that Stanford and Cal would be top of the list. And getting into Texas somehow would be a priority. I know that the ACC was also considering Memphis in the models. Memphis brings Tennessee subscribers and is on the border of Arkansas and Mississippi, so it may get some from those too.
But I feel like Jim Phillips didn't sell the Presidents on a vision at all. This is knee jerk. But perhaps Stanford and Cal weren't going to entertain it until the PAC12 completely imploded around them.

different by the time 2036 (or 2030) arrives and is pointless to do anything now. At least travel expenses will not explode if ACC stays at current level
That being said, not taking WVU when they were begging to come on board in 2014 was the biggest mistake IMO

Hard. I really do not know what ro make of all this. SMU is in a great state, that is all I got.
(In response to this post by Maroon Baboon)
I wanted the ACC to go after 7 schools in 7 different NEW states after USC
My preference was: UW, UO. ASU or UA (and maybe both), CU, Cal, Utah and SMU.
7 new states to put the ACCN in.
And if Cal wanted to be its usual annoying self, then get SDSU or Fresno. I don't care. Just get the State of CA cable subscriptions. Plus, SDSU and Fresno would probably appreciate it more and compete harder anyway.
There was no discussion of this coming from the ACC. But now that only Cal, Stanford, OrSU and Wazzu remain, now the ACC decides to engage. What a bunch of losers. Philips and the ACC brass are stealing a pay check.

Remember that the ACC Network is still interested in LOCAL subs (Premium $)
Right now the ACCN only gets top subscriber rates for "local" schools. This means that a sub in Virginia pays more for the ACCN than one in Idaho. The Idaho rate is cheap and the Virginia rate is much higher.
Now, imagine that you can now add subs for the ACCN in California and Texas. Those high rates now kick in for two of the three most populated states in the country. This is also why the Big 10 went into LA to get USC and UCLA. Additionally, ACC content will be pushed to ESPN/2 and ABC for Saturday Night Football and Saturday afternoon. ABC will love a "local" presence in the San Francisco or Dallas market for an ACC game.
I know the lunacy of Cal/Stanford/SMU makes little sense, but the ACC needed more revenue...
(In response to this post by RonMexicoHokie)
How much more revenue will getting the ACCN into Texas and Cali generate?
I don't know.
But after the USC departure, I was hoping the ACC added a team WA, OR, CA, AZ, UT, CO and TX from the PAC-12 leftovers, plus maybe SMU. What say you?
(In response to this post by CobbCountyHokie)

so if conservatively, let’s say the ACCN’s in-market customers pay $0.50 more, and picking up 20 million customers in both states would bring $120M of extra revenue annually. Adding those 3 schools would pay for itself as a result, and they’re probably all willing to receive reduced shares for a while, so that would mean extra cash for the other 15 members.
(In response to this post by Maroon Baboon)
2y
mention in s news article, couple of years back, that Cali has 6.25 million.
(In response to this post by BROman Hokie)
2y
add in streaming services and it’s probably closer to 15 million, which would still bring in $90 million.

then deal me in. This is just about financial survival until 2036 (or before). Pure and simple.

I think you can look back on my postings and see where I advocated..
bringing in Stanford, Cal, Arizona, ASU, Oregon, and Washington. To me, the revenue story made sense for the league and it would bring in money from Disney from the added dayparts on ESPN and ACCN.
Of course, it took a jail break by most of the Pac - 12 to get the ball rolling.
(In response to this post by Maroon Baboon)
Did the ACC even try?
If so, I imagine that it was two bridges too far: the travel and the 2036 GOR.
(In response to this post by CobbCountyHokie)
I guess the question that needs to be asked is:
How does this make money for Florida State?
Yeah. I know they are locked in with the GOR. But FSU threat to leave (somehow) is the biggest problem for Phillips. It's a PR problem and might soon be a legal problem (at least in terms of paying lawyers).
Ditto for the would-be Cal-Stanford invite.

If two are leaving, why add? Just have each member keep a bigger share of
the payout. That's what the B12 did when A&M and Mizzou left.

The B10 has 18 schools. Ohio st, Mich, Penn, Ore, wash, USC, Wisc, Mich St, all expect to get in the CFP. Call me crazy, bit wouldn't your chances of getting in the CFP go down if you add more top programs to a conference? How many 2-loss teams will make it? Same with the SEC. Both conferences expect to get 5-6 teams in. If I'm ND, I'm going to the ACC for an easier path to the CFP. 80% of success is showing up. Can't win if you not in.
(In response to this post by Maroon Baboon)
The way the CFP-4 and the CFP-12 stand now, I think you are correct. But
if that changes, and I think it will (I doubt they continue to give 6 champs bids in the next round of negotiations), then all bets are off. If things keep going the way they are in realignment, I could see them giving the P2 champs byes in a CFP-14 model. Not predicting it, but something of this nature wouldn't surprise me.

being involved. It could very well be that the ACC went to ESPN and they want to get more money (obviously), so ESPN is telling them what they need to do to bring that kind of value to the conference.
Unlike the B12, they are not doing this to give pro rata with nothing in return. They would have to get more money per school, otherwise, the conference is spinning their wheels.
The ACCN is key here, and this would have to generate enough revenue to put the ACC in a solid pathway to placate the top teams, or they are just spinning their wheels.
(In response to this post by VTBoar)
I feel like the ACC was on shaky ground from the start.
Then Miami decided it was quiet quitting football. And then the 2003 moves really looked bad in retrospect.
I enjoyed the Big East days more, if I may confess.
