Posting History (19)

I see Tranghese a little differently (and I am not a fan of his)

But he did see that FB would be the money maker and that’s why he started the BEFC. He (much like the ACC) had to appease the basketball powers in the conference which ended up screwing us and Temple. But he did have the. Vision, but not the ability to carry it through. Kind of like the ACC was with Duke and UNC (though their opposition to expansion actually helped us). The SEC made it clear from the get, they’re going to be on board with making the conference better (or perceived to be better).

Is that their way of saying discussions are ongoing with ESPN

As well?, Right now ESPN does not have a major conference team based in CA in their primary tv deals

The ACC is screwed without a new TV deal closing the financial gap, and

And that probably won’t happen. Eventually the Big 10 and SEC will fill out their conferences and other than maybe Stanford, the only schools those conferences will target are ACC schools.

Miami tanking had nothing to do with coming to the ACC. If you recall

The unofficial ACC championship game in 04 was VT, Miami final game of the season. The two new members were immediately the top 2 teams in 04. Miami’s problems were a series of bad hires after Davis left. Coker won a championship but recruiting took a hit under him and they never recovered. IMO, the reason the ACC is in the position it’s in now is MIami dropping off a cliff, FSU sucking for 9 years, Clemson being mediocre for years. VT and BC in some ways had to carry the conference with a couple of decent years by GT. That is until 2011 when Clemson replaced VT.

In 03? No. They had a better deal in the BE than they do in ACC

They didn’t have the 5 game requirement in the BE and didn’t have any interest in the BE football conference, so they would have no need to recommend expansion teams. Their only concern was having a place for non football sports. If you can go back and look at old TSL posts during ACC expansion, when it looked like the ACC was going to take Miami, BC, and Cuse, a lot of fans were unloading on ND’s deal with the BE. I don’t fault ND for doing what they’re doing by staying independent. It’s what makes sense for them right now. I am just making the point that the ACC, right now, almost seems as dysfunctional as the BE was in 03, sans the non football members the BE had. Funny thing is, if the BE could have held together, it was and would have been a better fb conference than the ACC.

All of this reminds me of the BE days. Miami demanding better payouts

Even though the BE had a tiered payout based on bowl participation. That scheme made it hard for Miami if they didn’t do well enough in a particular season. They also had ND in all sport except football. When the ACC came sniffing, ND didn’t do anything to help the BE stay together, Miami was itching to go. Now it’s FSU holding everyone hostage with threats, and ND not pulling its weight, and the only they could is to fully join. We can submit to FSU’s demands, but they will still be out the door the first opportunity they get, unless the ACC figures out how to close the revenue gap. I wish everything would just shake out now and be done. It’s been really hard to care much about college athletics with all of the money rolling in to some conferences but not others, loyalties dying etc.

Because they already have 2 California teams. That’s

Why they took Oregon and not Stanford and why they would take VT or UVA before Stanford.

The SEC will never give up its cream puffs.

I think you will see 3 conferences break off, similar to the 1a 1aa split.

I think it depends on what the SEC’s next move is. I can

See them taking FSU and Clemson but also wanting to add new markets. If they did that, then we should be in decent shape. I do think the ACC as we know its days are numbered. The BIG and SEC will poach the best schools and kill the conference off. What I hope plays out is us and NC State end up in the SEC with FSU and Clem; UVA and UNC to the BIG. It’s really a shame and a reason I don’t pay as much attention to college football anymore. The ACC made some bad decisions at the conference level as well as the universities making bad decisions. Too much pride IMO. This combined with FSU and Miami tanking at exactly the wrong time did us no favors.
