Awful Announcing: ESPN seems to be PAC12 Favorites
The rumors grow. I don't know if this it right, but it keeps getting reported that ESPN is going to put the ACC with the PAC12. I'm not against it, but would rather have stuff not as far away. But if it pays enough, we can do it.

the PAC12. I always thought a a connection between the ACC and the PAC12 would be really cool -- never imagined it would happen.

This would solidify a third major conference. Not as big as the SEC/B1G,
but I think this would give us a seat at the table.

This would awesome for me
Only time I have seen the Hokies play out here was the Diamond Walnut Bowl.

To get a chance to see the Hokies in Berkeley or Palo Alto would be interesting for us NoCal alum. Heck, I’ve always wanted to catch a game at Husky Stadium in Seattle. Never thought it could realistically be VT.

so why are we going to spread out even more? Just like the first Alliance, it's just really hard to do the scheduling part. Maybe down the road, but who knows what will be happening 10 years from now? The last 12-13 months have been crazy and we still don't know what the new set up for college football/college sports is going to be for the P64.

The 8 conference games will happen no matter.
Every ACC team could play 1 or 2 games against Pac10 (and counting) from the OCC games.

really generate interest WITHIN the alliance and in my mind would make for a longer term possibilities. ACCN might be able to kick up ads etc. If they don't then it will be a bust and fizzle quickly. This ,imo, will be an opportunity to be a part of national brand growth.
We can still use the new scheduling model. jmo

ago - cant remember where - but it said that the ACC looked at doing some things with the PAC a few years ago, but the ACC Presidents did not think it was a good idea due to the distance. Well...., now that the PAC has lost 2 VERY valuable properties AND the ACC is staring down the gun barrel, they may end up doing something with the PAC. Always reactionary and after the fact. I have always felt like JS was a VERY big liability to the ACC (and still do) but the ACC Presidents have as much, if not more, to blame for the position that the ACC now finds themselves in.
I suspect that if/when the ACC moves on something with the PAC, the B1G will beat them to the punch and grab Org, Stan, Wash first.

We still will be in the same league as Wake Forest, NC State, UVA, UNC, Duke, GT, Louisville, Pitt, Clemson, etc....
Why does everybody think new schedules will look like this:
@ Oregon
@Stanford
@ Washington
@ Utah
Home- UNC
@ Cal
@ Washington State
Home - UVA
@ Arizona
@ Arizona State
@ Colorado
Home - Wake Forest
@ Oregon State
So now, due to this possible merger with the PAC10, all of a sudden VT will never play half our games at home anymore, right? And we will also never play any road games in the states of VA, NC, SC, GA, KY and PA (Where the ACC still has NINE teams located?) Bummer, figures ESPN would screw us over like that....

"...keep the Pac-12 as a conference alive with a new, long-term rights deal, though the value of that deal would be significantly less than expected."
This is ESPN we're talkin' about. They are not your friend. They want to put The PAC 12 in the same kind of straitjacket they have on The ACC. If you don't yet see a pattern wait till the new SEC deal has aged a few years with inflation soaring. The SEC has a bigger payout, but they are on a fixed income until 2034. They are going to feel it. It's not just The ACC that has bought into the ESPN plan for "long term security." The SEC has done it too and now they're working on the PAC 12.
I hope the other networks get involved in the bidding for PAC 12 rights. And I hope they avoid long-term GoR commitments in case other PAC schools get a chance to move up.

Negotiations ended when the Big 8 took the top four teams from the SWC to become the Big 12.
We should do that same, and take Wash, Oregon, Stanford and Utah.

Add Oklahoma State and Kansas then whoever else makes sense to create a western wing.
I think the overall sports product would be awesome. I believe you could go to a regional then national model for conference championships.
Football is the only one that is hard to work in. If they'd allow conference tournaments....
I know two conferences that would vote for that.
If we go 12 team playoff there will be a lot of ACC+ teams invited anyway.
We'll be receiving less money than the big 2 but you work with what you're given.

PAC12, ACC, BIG12 pods and fill in the gaps with other National followings or up and comers if you need to (BYU, UCF, UConn, maybe in it the service academies if needed). Keep a lot of the regional rivalries and you can limit the cross country travel to a minimum.
Ignore playing any of the BIG10 or SEC teams in any sports. Maybe a few big shot billionaires (e.g. Phil Knight) leads the charge on bankrolling a network to do it right.
It’s a dream and needs a big time leader/sponsor but think big.

Add Washington, Oregon, Stanford, and Utah. Let them be primary opponents with each other to minimize the extra travel.
90% of the new ESPN money is because of those teams anyway, and it gets us a sixth game with ND every year.
Why do we have to be the good guys and save the PAC? The Big 10 killed it, not us.
Our job now is to make the ACC worth the most it can be.

until the season starts and then it will be 2 years.
That said, ND will not join a conference until there is a P64, 4 conferences with 16 and that is the only way that you can make it to the playoff. The 4 conferences and 16 is an educated guess recently restated by John Skipper. The second part about them only joining a conference for the long run when it is the only way to make the playoff, is a fact that comes from Notre Dame. In fact , the two that post basically Independence or die for ND, even have admitted that more than once. That's why what happens with the realignment of the top tier football schools/sports is so important for them.

If they were ready to give that up, ND would be Big 10 bound by now.
(In response to this post by goldendomer)

that's 6 games accounted for out of 8 for conference play. Seems like the benefit of adding 2, let's say you had 2 permanent West Coast rivals, would be worth giving up a smidge of schedule flexibility for opportunity at ACCCG to elevate playoff prospects. Still could keep your home TV contract

If the ACC adds Stanford, then that can either be an annual game that knocks the 5 down to 4 (rotate the rest) or ND can drop Stanford as an annual opponent and add Cal to fill in the years Stanford is rotated like other ACC teams.
I don't think ND will be interested in adding any more annual ACC games, no matter what.

Assuming we end up with Stanford actually in the ACC, and ND allowed us to treat those six games as conference games, 3 home and 3 away each year. ND then would earn their way into the ACCCG by having the best or second best ACC and overall win %'s. That is, they would have to be in the top two for both to replace the normally #2 team.
This would add a ton of interest to the ND/ACC games, and the ACCCG (equaling more $). And it would help FSU, Louisville, GT and Clemson work their SEC rivals into their schedules.
And ND could still claim independence, because the special arrangement lets them have their national "independent" schedule, and TV contract, etc.
I think on balance, it is worth it.

More cash from the ACC deal for ND + A better deal with NBC for home games will keep ND competitive with the B1G on the balance sheet. And the SEC and B1G cannot break away and play for their own title if ND, Clemson, Oregon, Miami, Washington and FSU are in the same conference.
If THAT happens, the NCAA (led by the ACC, ND and Big XII) will exclude the SEC and B1G from the NCAA basketball tournament and they'll lose money there. The NCAA basketball tournament can exist without Kentucky before it can exist without Gonzaga, St. Peter's, Duke, UNC, Kansas, VCU, Butler, Santa Clara, Richmond, UMBC, you know all those teams that make it great...
(In response to this post by goldendomer)
Interesting post. The P2 would still have IU, UK, MSU, and UCLA blue bloods
But yeah, their tournament would suck. But they might be so loaded ($), they don't care.
I agree with you about the football side too. I think there is enough football cachet left behind in the best of the rest to be a problem for the P2. But the ACC/B12/PAC need to do something IMO is form up in someway that allows the top powers to play in the regular season. I like the idea of a promotion-relegation system within the three conference "alliance". If someone has a better idea, I'd love to hear it.

I know ND doesn't want to join a conference and enjoys being able to play and recruit nationally, but an ACC/PAC arrangement provides top flight academic affiliations and a national footprint. Obviously not Plan A for ND but I think it gives them something to think about. Does ND want to be A big fish or THE big fish.

Occur. Do I believe it would be a good thing? Debatable. I just am concerned with ND getting to involved an another wild ACC attempt to stave off ruination.

then ND is more likely able to remain indy.
I would think they'd have a very close eye on what is going on and if they can tweak it to their advantage, they would. ND already plays half its regular season against that group and neither of those conferences wants to fall further behind B1G and SEC.

I mentioned this before when another poster wondered why ND never tried to create its "own" conference.
ND has never had the desire to be the leader of a conference.
I don't know why ND just cannot renew the NBC deal in 2025 and forge ahead in football without such things as this idea?

They will get their NBC contract for all of their home games. Road game money against ACC schools will go to ESPN via the ACCN agreement. If some kind of media alliance between Pac10 (and counting) comes to fruition, then TV money for a game at Stanford will accrue to ESPN via the "new" agreement. TV money when ND plays at USC-w will go to B10 and Fox.

Just look at all the Directors Cups they win. Their campus is amazing as are their Olympic sports facilities. The Avery Aquatics Center is the best in the world. There is display outside it with all the swimming and water polo Olympians over the years that is astounding. And they don't really care that much about football. They may just be above all this. They have ridiculously wealthy alumni who give, they have an incredible academic reputation, they have world class facilities, their campus is amazing (you can smell eucalyptus year round), the weather is amazing.........they will still get amazing recruiting classes in the other sports, send athletes to the Olympics, and survive above the fray.

That doesn’t seem too big of a change. It’s not an actual merger of the two. At least not yet.
I just don’t get how espn is affording all of this. Aren’t they consistently losing money for Disney? Maybe it helps them at tax time and for marketing the more profitable parts of the company. Well looks like we are stuck with the acc for another decade.

It would give the PAC 12, 10, or whatever, more eastern exposure and the ACC more western exposure. It will be interesting to see how this might play out.
