overflow north end zone stands in Lane Stadium. I had a Charlie Coffee cap ( up until a few years ago when it disappeared ). I still have my Hokie Central car magnet. Also honorable mention memory is first time I drove in for a game and saw someone selling tickets at a pull over as we came off 460 by-pass. Our tickets had never been in demand enough to attract scalpers.

I could tell you about the WV games between 1981 to 1984 They were tough battles where @bourbonstreet could write 30 pages of gibberish understood by many, but barely understandable to VaTechie. West Virginia won them all 1981 27-6 1982 16-6 1983 13-0 1984 14-7 In 1984, a drunk VaTechie suggested taking down the West Virginia flag off the Lane Stadium flags. I do not remember how they picked the flags to fly back then, but it could be flags of visiting teams for that year since we were independent. The flag was on a very thick rope and actually had it pad locked. Drunk VaTechie and another drunk returned to the group and told them it would take a big sharp knife to cut it down. A Franklin county girl in the group had a nice knife in her purse and I returned with my good friend and her boyfriend. We cut the padlock off which fell to the ground and it came down within seconds to the cheering crowd. If memory serves, Tech 7-0, 7-7, and West Virginia scores at the end of the game for a 14-7 win. VaTechie left drunk with the flag yelling: WVU sucks and I have your flag. I went by some middle aged WV lady and she elbowed me as hard in the stomach like the midget punched boubounstreet in the nuts at the Wild West Saloon. Her husband had a really worried look on his face wondering what I was going to do. I laughed my ass off and said I was too drunk to feel a damn thing to their amusement. All was good, and down I went with the flag. The Collegiate Times had an article on the stolen flag. They were looking for the students that cut down the flag so they could kick them out for the rest of the year minimum and they would have to pay for the repairs. VaTechie and his Franklin county moon shine drinking friend got off scot-free. It happened too quickly and my huge group was not going to turn us in. Since I graduated in March that year, the flag has hung on the wall at the Grey House known to have great parties. It was my pregame spot since I was very good friends with everyone living there from my one year in a dorm. We actually lived together three years in a townhouse by the cemetery on Roanoke street. We were known for putting a keg in a field to start the annual tackle football. The last game we had, a freshman came with his roommate who was a friend. We drank heavily, had loud music playing, and played like we were NFL guys. The cops came because of the loud music. They decided to just give me a warning for music that could be heard for 500 feet where 50 feet was the law. The game almost ended when the freshman had his teeth go through his fat lips. He and his roommate left. We re-balanced the teams, and played on. Everyone missed the first two days of classes because they were so sore and could not even get out of bed. A few missed 3 days. My brother and I were two days, but barely made it to the third day. A total of 12 to 14 people. Fast forward to 1987 where I went to a party hosted by a co-worker and his wife. I was the mentor for the co-worker. He tells me about his first day at school and he played tackle football that two wild brothers set up with a keg in the field and he got his lip busted where it required a bunch of stitches. His parents were not happy. I told him that it was my brother and I, and we finally recognized ourselves from his first day. My brother, who was in Chemical Engineering, lived at Mr.Fooz. In his last quarter he mentioned he was graduating that year in Chemical Engineering with a 3.0. The Mr. Fooz staff gave him his first pitcher of beer free per visit for the last few weeks he was at VT. He was in there at least 5 days a week. Plenty of free beer. In 1984, my brother came to the UVA game. That was a big UVA win and they stormed the field. My brother jumped the field, broke his foot unknown to him, but claims he clocked a few Hoos. He had to leave the field before he was going to be arrested because the cops had warned him the first time he jumped the wall (broke foot), but returned for round two. In my first UVA game in 1980 with Ray, we left the game jubilant and I jumped on the back of a limousine celebrating. Then the cops started coming at me and I realized I was on the governor’s car. I ran through the hedges. The cops did not have a chance to catch me. My brother went on to be very successful before he died at 52 (long story another day). He saved a few hundred Wheeling, WV blue collar jobs. The company had corporate approved the US flag be flown at half mask for his death for a month. They later put a memorial plaque with his picture on it and it hangs at the factory. It has been 13 years since he died, and I miss my brother everyday. Headline In the European American paper ‘herald tribune’… The paper only had one page of American sports, and was usually just college scores, with rest of that one page focused on NFL that time of year…EXCEPT that one college headline🙃 of THAT game

Alabama’s archives showed VT had 216 rushing yards vs UA 77 (see the link to Bama archives). Regardless, UA had 2 TDs to VTs 1. I recall being very disappointed in supposed elite Jack Simsack place kicker even though he made 2 FGs…maybe a couple botched but not sure. One bright spot was VT 19 first downs, UA only 13. About Bear Bryant, he was every bit as statuesque as the legend foretold. A fellow grad student friend in ‘73 was a freshman LB that in ‘69 and, of course, he had a couple friends at Bama. He said the rumor was true that Bama FB players would cross to the other side of the road to avoid passing the Bear on the sidewalk.

However, did enjoy our music city bowl game win over bama…they filed out well prior to game end..
