Trying to imagine this board if Pry came back as D-Coordinator if we hired
Franklin, would be comedy gold

might be a good defensive coordinator when that is all he has to focus on. In addition, he may make Franklin more comfortable here, resulting in success. I guarantee you that he and Franklin have been on the phone.

He seemed like a mediocre defensive playcaller when he was doing that here. Not a trainwreck but was nothing special or innovative. He had his hands heavily on the defense during his tenure it was pretty rough at times especially, against the run. Never could get linebacker (his apparent specialty) right which caused most of the issues against the run. Nothing close to redeeming enough about his tenure here to have any P4 team consider him as a DC candidate. Also not to mention it would be horrible for the culture to hire a guy who the team literally gave up on and got fired 3 games into the season back to be the 2nd or 3rd most important coach on the staff. People please stop suggesting this it’s objectively not a good idea.

career going back to being the DC at Penn State. Just because Brent is not a CEO right now or maybe ever, it doesn’t erase that he’s been an outstanding DC for a long time.

when you get rehired by the school that is paying your buyout?

I remember watching a OSU v PSU game a year or two before Pry was hired. Pry's D had the Bucknuts stymied in the first half. Herbstreit was lauding Pry and the D, gushing over him! Problem was Franklin had no Offense and a terrible O Coord. Buckeyes pulled away in the 2nd half and wasted the Defensive effort. Sound familiar??

Maybe I’m having a brain meltdown, but thought there were two at PSU.

brought or could have brought Sean Spencer with him to VT.

He was unable to adjust to lower tier players.

then we can only conclude that he is an utterly inept head coach. He hired a rookie DC and gave him the reigns of the defense while he did other things. What an idiot.

He couldn't believe it when Tech hired him because most fans wanted a new D coordinator anyway.

Yeah, LB development absolutely blew.
We finally have a true freshman inside linebacker who we desperately need to keep! He's getting better every game!

excellent D Coord and LB coach. LB coaching was his schtick on coaching clinics and circuits. It's the mystery or one of the mysteries of his time at VT.

Hand them mediocre players and you see what they really are - a mediocre coach.

How did he do so well as PSU's D coordinator and LB coach, yet not so well here. It can't be that much of a talent difference.

and inconsistency on the O side as they had 4 or 5 different O coordinators during his time at PSU. He was the glue trying to hold it together similar to Bud quite honestly.

at VT, I'd prefer him just coach LB's until he got his feet under himself again.

Coming back so people can boo if the defense underperforms wouldn’t be as much fun.
