VT needs to think bigger than Mullen in their next hire.
Also, get rid of Whit

However, with the increased funds and some creativity we've got to make a better hire than DM. He's a safer bet than a rising star (I think) but is VTs goal to be 7-5?
VT cannot afford another 6-6 or 5-7 type hire just because we're allegedly so insignificant and poor.
Maybe someone like Cignetti would prefer a chance to build a legacy at VT over having a couple extra $1MM.....VT will eventually be in the SEC after the next round of conference raids.

Is the last coaching search and how it ended at all instructive?
The absudity of some of the names I've heard floated is only exceeded by the absurdity of the posts claiming those names aren't good enough for VT.
If by some freak miracle Mullen actually agreed to come to BlacksVegas VT should immediately put iron chains on him and charter the plane before he has a chance to change his mind.

Time to stop looking down our noses at uber qualified candidates and thinking VT is better than them. News flash: the program needs them more than any of them need this program. VT is old news. A barely was relevant program. If VT can convince Dan Mullen or anyone of his caliber to come Iβll be surprised.

Neither had cultural ties to SWVA and just wouldn't be accepted by the donor class.

First, are they undead? Thatβs harder to do than youβd expect.
Second, to your point about the donor class, most major world religions have issues with the undead and atheists just wonβt believe itβs possible.
Third, regardless of the type of undead weβre talking about, locker rooms after a bad game or practice are going to be rough. Keeping and recruiting players will become difficult.
Iβm here all week folks! Donβt forget to tip your waiters and waitresses. Try the veal!!

If he moves at all. He may really like UNLV and just want to stay somewhere you can win 8-9 games a year and keep your job. Not a bad gig if you donβt mind living in Vegas.
IMO VT has to find this years Cignetti or Elko. Either a guy with a good head coaching track record that was likely constrained by resources (Iβm assuming VT steps up) or quiet competence of a seasoned coordinator (could care less about charisma and winning the off season) whose team gets worse and not better. after he leaves. Itβs not easy process which is why Pry had to be let go in September. And itβs still a 50/50 proposition if you do it right.

They're already accepting that they need more $ in this insane age of NIL and arm$ race.
At the end of the day $ and ability to hire/pay assistants and NIL players is what is needed....in addition to being able to have the freedom to build their own program.
TSL board has zero impact on hiring so what are you suggesting by replacing hubris with humility? BOV? AD? Sands?

That same donor base has a history of looking down its nose at people like Elko and Cignetti. Hopefully weβve learned a lesson and donβt just throw a lot more good money after bad.

donors, Whit or anybody was convinced this was a genius hire but it seemed like a decent hire.
If I recall correctly, the guys I wanted didn't pan out....one of them being the coach for Marshall.
I also believe Mike Young was an A+ hire.

a living talking about Razorbacks, SEC and whatever topic of the day might be (in that order) they were discussing the Ok State firing and ranking the early season openings. They rank VT as the best opportunity of the current openings....but they expect Arkansas to enter the party at some point this season...Along with their AD.
The VT brand might be bigger than the "sky is falling" crowd might think.
The kicker is...now get this...they were also whining that Arkansas doesn't have sufficient funding to compete.
I drove off the road.
Keep in mind that this is the same team that had enough Tyson Chicken money to go get Calipari from Kentucky and fund a NIL budget that will keep him happy.

Way too much uncertainty. And more importantly, not nearly enough money. IU's B1G TV contact pulling in about 30-40 million per year more per team than the ACC.
And is the current JMU coach bigger than Mullen? I don't think most people would agree. A diamond in the rough? Maybe.

Dana Holgorson leaving WVU for UH before UH put him back in the B12. He was not being shown the door at the time. Sometimes there are other factors, pay of course, ability to succeed, working relationships, connections, etc. You have to look at it on a case by case basis with each potential hire.

between Indiana and VT now? Something else worth considering is that Luke Fickell may be on the hot seat at Wisky. Cignetti's name is being mentioned as a likely candidate for there. If Fickell is fired, then it could turn into a stay at Indiana vs. accept Wisky HC vs. accept VT HC situation for him.
