Heading to B'burg Regardless - Need Options for Family
I had tickets for myself and the family to the VT-UVA game and managed to score a hotel in Blacksburg for a decent rate - I was ready to start jumping. Now that it's cancelled, we've decided to still go to Blacksburg and show the kids around. We are going up Friday evening and catching the MBB game at Cassell and then staying until Sunday around noon when we'll head back home. It's been 20 years since I've been to Blacksburg other than for football games and am looking for options to show my wife and kids how awesome the town and campus are. We'll obviously spend a while walking around campus but what are some good options for this weekend? Looking for recommendations of things to do, places to eat, etc. The place has changed quite a bit in 20 years (graduated in 01). Kids are 9 and 11 and enjoy anything new and exciting. Any recommendations???

If you can stay that long. You should be able to walk through Merriman and check the football displays.

...and...right around the corner on Jackson St there is an arcade (that also has ax throwing!). Not sure what their holiday hours are but could be a good pitstop for two boys (the arcade games, not so much the axes :)...)

School closed but if open, check out the
Inn at VT. you might find that they have the Christmas trees set up i included a link to admissions center but you would have to be there Friday. Its spectacular. If you're lucky you and someone lets you into lobby of Goodwin Hall. The suspended rolls Royce engine is worth checking out

weekend for thanksgiving. If wanting to kill any time, go to squires for bowling or shoot pool (but same thing here- I wonder if it's closed)

Eastern Divide...cool space, has great food, and plenty of "run around" room for kids. Fun place.
Moon Hollow...often has good food trucks, so worth checking their schedule.

We do a fair amount of hiking with the kids and the Cascades is cool (from what I remember) but really want to focus on things that are specific to Blacksburg and VT

Share some awesome pastries and hot cocoa at Carol Lee's donuts, visit the 4-16 memorial and see the steam tunnels at Burruss Hall, visit the pylons & War Memorial Chapel, walk across Torgerson bridge, pick up some VT mementos/gear at the bookstore, stroll around to seek out the 15 gargoyles on campus buildings, pose for some photos at the Beamer statue outside Lane Stadium and enjoy a family style country dinner at Blacksburg Tavern. Maybe take in some bowling/entertainment in Squires Student Center or lunch at West End Market (if open).

Haul a cow to top floor of Pritchard?
Throw a vending machine from an upper floor into the pit?
Long range water balloons with a big slingshot aimed at the cadets while they're drilling?

The Dietrich Dash? That means making the kids eat something to produce the Dietrich Dash.
Crawling Downtown?
Schultz doesn't exist anymore but if it did, the Schultz Sh*tz Run was a thing on my hall.
Is the fountain in front of Squires still there? If so a bottle of dish soap in it will produce a pretty sudsy reaction when it is on.
On a serious note, paying respect to the April 16th Memorial. I knew a few of those people, tell them they are not yet forgotten.
War Memorial on the Drill Field.
Walk around the Duck Pond.
Go wander Blacksburg until you find the Big Boy - a few year's ago it was in the woods behind my freshman year roommate's house.
Gumby's.
Too cold now for Slusher Beach but tell your son he needs a view from his room when he lives on campus.
Make the kids march across the drillfield at 7am in the cold and wind.
Sarah Lee's and Souvlaki. Lord I hope those are still there.
This post has created a total nostalgia-gasm for me. I now really want to make a trip back.
