Wish him well, but am grateful I won't need to keep seeing how
to pronounce his name properly.

He'll drop 30 on us next year.

Maybe he will give up his dream of being a point guard and get his hands
dirty. Seems like when VT gets a star like Rice or Neo, they want to be the primary ballhandler. Maybe those guys aren't good fits.

Don't really understand the move.
For a guy needing to be on the court for NBA evaluation, why go somewhere that you'll be competing with a bunch of 5 stars for playing time? Unless it's just about immediate cash.

He'll be playing with "better players" which should let his talent shine.

His minutes may well go down, so maybe his new HC can bring out his
talents in less minutes. Playing with better talent can be a double edged sword. If he is allowed to play true point, he may indeed show off his talents.

My point is he'll be playing less...
and may not play much at all, depending on the rest of UNCheat's roster. Which would seem problematic for NBA scouting. He averaged 31.7 MPG this year for reference. Doubt he gets that with the heels. ** Edited by LonghornHokie at 4/13/2026, 3:51:18 PM

In 4 years in school he’d make over $10 million
And possibly never sniff the NBA Regardless of whether he plays or not he has made a life changing financial decision. Good for him.

Prob a better fit for several reasons, but he still has 2-3 glaring issues
It won't hurt that he'll likely be healthy too.

OR will be better used and coached?

Did I not say "for several reasons"?

Better used and coached…
He had no handle and could not get his shot off when he faced ACC caliber players. Good luck at UNCheat. He was a waste of NIL money this year.

UNC coach knows the NBA and european players
He did win the NBA championship. Lets see if we see a challenging player for VT, evolving into a 1st round draft pick, in a different environment. Like others....

Does this say no NBA? Thought part of the problem was had to go because
We wouldn’t know if he would be gone to the NBA. Thus holding a spot that we couldn’t fill and would know too late.

He will still go through the draft process...
With a dollar amount higher than the end of the 1st round he will need a guarantee to declare. He would be taking less money with a pick after pick 20, but he would be getting the guaranteed money that comes with a 1st round pick. Will be interesting to see what he does

Do you really think he is worth 4 million?Or is that the going rate for an
ACC starter nowadays?

Its what it took to keep him from declaring and accepting a 2nd rd grade

Long term does this benefit the NBA by keeping 2nd rounders in college and
let them have additional development or is it competition for them and they would rather have these players in their system/GLeague?

Or have people stay in college who won't be drafted

curious - how, where do you know the amount? is it public info?

Relationships with a staff member of his finalist
They offered slightly more than UNC, but Malone's pitch was an NBA style offense centered around making him better with spacing

Crazy for the most overrated player to play at VT. Sadly I think he will
Be there in a year or two. Too bad not at VT. Can’t imagine him against anyone I saw in the sweet 16 yet alone the final 8. He needs a lot more muscle. He has the offensive skills but definitely lacked in muscle and defense.

Bet his arms will get stronger carrying all that money.

$4M for a player that got benched on a non-Tournament team. Well done, UNC!

In his shoes. Upward movement.

talking about upward movement, too bad he couldn't do it at Vt..
...it was an opportunity for our own fav program to elevate itself in terms of perception. Now, I'm hearing the opposite on all the channels covering this ("MY didn't know what to do with him", "needed more talent around him", etc.) ** Edited by GoldCoast at 4/13/2026, 10:38:58 PM
