I am assuming that it will be another big rebuild for men's hoops next year
Who are some possible names from the transfer portal that may be interest for us. This is likely a make or potential final year for CMY, so I think it is NCAA or bust...and I worry about the bust part of it.

Minimal/no school spirit or pride, mostly just paid mercenaries. Every year is a rebuild year when you have to buy the best players you can afford.

you're going to need a war chest to bring in a replacement, and (2) how likely is our investment going to generate a big ROI? This year was a stress test for that theory and I think we see the results. We are either going to have to invest much more or we are going to have to be content with where we are in the pecking order.

Theres not a world where Whit Babcock is withholding money from the basketball program in order to help the basketball program
Here's the deal...
VT announced "Hey, we have a ton of money coming in"
Except...they didn't have the money
But wait, we have a new football coach...
...ok, we will give the football coach what we actually have
...but what about basketball?
Our fans are stuck on practicing zone defense and free throws, you think theyre gonna notice we aren't funding the program?

2026-27 will be the placeholder year of all placeholder years, as we go through the motions and wait and hold out hope that in March of 2027 the powers to be, whomever they may be, declare to the world that Virginia Tech is finally serious about basketball.

Doesn't have this abysmal year coming up attached to his name. Everyone can get the Chester Frazier to HC out of their system and VT can finally move on with a new administration.
A lot of people swear MY only got the job because of the good ol' boy system...but if thats the case, the same people who hired him must actively hate him and hope he doesn't succeed. So hard to believe MY has ever had that kind of pull in the administration.

I would like to have info on the actual dollar amount that VT MBB is going to receive from rev share. Then what’s the projected VT NIiL MBB projection.?
What were they paying NEO, Lawal and Pasha?
I also believe that the VT MBB program was in the red last year and that the VT Athletic fund raising for VT MBB didn’t appear to be very good.

If true, how can you increase the athletic budget $50 to $60 million and not find a way to improve your 2nd biggest sport. I know some of the NIL money is separate pot, but still. Why do we still have the people running the athletic dept that we do

If it stays the same I wonder if other ACC schools are going to increase, stay the same or reduce their NIL budgets? That will likely dictact how good of a team we have where we could be competitive though it will be tough to make the dance.

Contender to win the ACC? We are never considered a contender for that. Or, a contender for an NCAAT berth? That’s a little different question. Or, not competitive, like the 24-25 team? That would indeed be unfortunate.

Pretty much the same funds at least to be competitive. But it does seem a stretch to think they would make the NCAAT without the funds most other NCAA teams have.
At least “competitive” gives reason to watch the games. There has to be some kind of fun factor to watching the games. We should have enough funds left to keep the core together, not sure after that since Hammond and Hansberry are going to need more to stay.

Love to know where all this money is going. If it's all going toward football then we must be running with a top 5ish budget as $190M is a healthy amount for any P4 Ath Dept, especially if other sports aren't getting anything more than before. Hopefully the results make up for possibly depressing hoops even more and ushering MY to a sad end.

VT like every other school can pay ~$20 million [total to all scholarship athlete] in revenue sharing from the athletics budget. after that the roster budget is supplemented by NIL, and NIL is an unpublished figure that varies widely from year to year depending on a multitude of factors, not limited to..
1) donor finances that year,
2) donor focus/priority on a particular sport - influenced to some degree by AD priorities.
3) momentum of the sport/program that can elicit a "strike while the iron is hot" reaction or a "I'll hold this money until next season..." reaction.
4) Specific star player(s) interested in VT who are seen as 'worth paying for' by major donor(s) with money to spend
5) A coach who instills confidence and has a track record of success (ties in with #3) who can sell a vision to donors as well as they can sell a vision to recruits
last year basketball budget had a bump from #3 and #4, but this upcoming year.. those factors are not the strong positives they were last year. #5 doesn't seem like a plus for Men's BB right now either. So we're relying on donors who love VT basketball enough to ride the ups and downs.

…sales opportunity - “we did it, adding an additional $47M to the VT athletics budget to bring us in line with the top ADs in the nation. If you can give now to our our MBB nil, we can bring MBB to the top of the ACC and back in the field in march! (Which was the sated goal)”
Too hard? Get some type of excitement and push to a revenue generating program with a solid core?

Makes me think that if he believes he doesn’t have the funds to compete he might go ahead and retire, on sudden notice like Tony Bennett did. And I wouldn’t blame him if he did. If we are going to play in this league we might as well pay the price to be a top 6-8 contender and try to grab that last NCAAT bid. We weren’t that far off this season.
