Past Hokies

Kitley is out of the WNBA. Still injured? Doesnt want to play anymore? Aamore doesnt look like she can play at this level at all. What happened?

Bunt

Screw the bunt, drive in the run. Way to go

No

We dont have an AD so no one is getting fired. If we have a new ad by the beginning of the school year, I would say many coaches need to be looking over their shoulders if they dont do well next season. ** Edited by Battlesuggs at 5/30/2026, 12:10:10 PM

Praise of the Athlete

I praise the athlete because you are who you are. Trying harder doesnt necessarily make you any better. These kids are trying as hard as they can. And the other teams are trying hard as well. To expect more from the players may not be realistic. To criticize coaching decisions or the AD or the administration for not investing more in softball to take advantage of the big run a few years ago and in a team that continues to win, thats completely fair. I frankly think the Franklin hire was a mistake. One, we arent ever winning a national championship and 2) all the other sports are getting short changed.

Schedule

We have played a weak schedule. Stats are inflated when you play weaker competition

Perspective

Lets be realistic here. We are a good team. Maybe a very good team. And all the players are great and seem like good people. They are a solid #2 seed. No shame in that, especially when you look at the rest of the athletic dept major teams. The team will make the post season. Did football, mbb, mens soccer or womens soccer. No they did not. Will baseball no they will not. Only WBB made the postseason. Lets give these kids credit for what they are doing to make the postseason for the 5th or 6th year in a row. But there is no curse, there is no slump, its not bad managing, they arent collapsing. Its simple analytics here, not advanced metrics like useless offensive efficiency and pitching efficiency, but wins and losses metrics. Of our 38 wins, 21 have come against teams with overall winning records and 17 have come against teams with .500 or losing records. But lets take that a step further, 13 of the 21 wins against teams with winning records are against teams that have .500 or losing records within their own conference. So 30 of 38 wins are against teams with overall .500 or losing records or overall .500 or losing conference records. Glad we beat south carolina but they are 5-13 in the sec. Glad we beat auburn but they are 3-15 in the sec. Of the 8 wins against teams that have winning overall and conference records, that list is Winthrop, USC Upstate twice, Clemson twice, Georgia twice (but only 10-8 in the sec) and Duke. Not a top 10 team on the list. We also have the 68th best strength of schedule and there are 53 teams playing softball in the power 4 conferences. How can you have such a lousy strength of schedule and be in a major league. With these metrics, its not surprising they lose some games. But it also doesnt mean they are bad or collapsing. They are a solid team and thats ok. But they will make the post season which is something virtually every Va Tech team fails to do. So lets give these kids credit and support them.

Seat Prices

There already is a tiered system with higher prices for the reserved seats. Its called, donate to the Hokie Club. Since the people sitting in the better seats donate more to the hokie club, they are in effect paying a higher price for those tickets. Just like in football or mbb, donate more to the hokie club, get better seats. Its a simple concept. Want a better overall sports progam, donate to the hokie club. If you dont donate much or at all to the hokie club, stop complaining. Why would a business penalize those that are willing to pay more. Its funny how people criticize open seats and want great seats to the one or two games they want to go to. Do you go on a wed in nov against Presybeterian or a thur night in Dec against Unc Wilmington. I doubt it. If there was also such a great demand, there would be a huge resale market. Guess what, there isnt, but you probably could still get a good seat on the resale market if you tried. Good economics thought here though. Lets raise prices on something where your highest attended game barely filled half the arena and you never have sell outs. Yes, that would work. As much as many of us like the womens game, me included, there isnt a massive demand. Less than 8 pct of living alumni donate to the hokie club, lets see more people pony up

Stats

This is not a bash at Mackie post, because I wished she stayed. But to Kings point, in the 7 games against our toughest competition, the 6 acc games against the 5 teams ahead of us in the acc standings and the ncaa tourney game against oregon, we were 0-7 and not competitive at all in 5 of those games. In those games Mackie was 15 of 46 shooting, avg 6.6 pts a game and had 29 assists to 20 turnovers. If we are going to be competitive in those games, we need much better point guard play. I wish her all the best and again was sorry to see her go. But if we want to compete, we need to upgrade the roster around carleigh

Not As Bad as it Seems

Lets be realistic here. I am sorry to see several of the key pieces hit the portal and had hoped and assumed they would be back. With that said we lost all players who are upper classmen who probably werent going to make dramatic steps forward. We were 0-6 against the 5 teams ahead of us in the acc standings and not even remotely competitive in 4 of the 6 losses and not competitive in the 4th quarter against Notre Dame. We also werent competitive in march madness against Oregon. Carleigh is back and thats what matters. She is the heart and soul of the team. As she always says, Go Hokies. Now lets give her some better help next year

No point in increasing athletic budget

If we dont have the NIL funding there is no point in increasing the athletic budget so much. No point to hire more useless administrators and support staff and pay coaches millions if you cant attract players. We have been lied to. But again, why is Whit still here. Lets recap Whit this year. Football - no bowl game, mens soccer - no ncaa tournament, womens soccer - no ncaa tournament, mens basketball - no ncaa tournament, womens basketball - first round loss. Wrestling - was good. Not a good track record. Softball will probably make the ncaa tourney while baseball wont. 7 major team sports. Only 2 post season and only 1 with a chance still to advance. Get rid of Babcock now. He doesnt deserve the increased athletic budget. Someone else doe

Funding

I said it before and I will say it again. I realize NIL funding can be a separate pot of money than the basic basketball budget, but if it is true that basketball spending will be flat or decline, how do you increase your athletic budget by $50 or $60 million and not put any of that money towards your 2nd most important sport. Going all in on football is just pure stupidity. I am glad we got Franklin, but its not like we are going to make the playoffs every year. Lets be real here. The athletic dept wants us all to give more money, but if you refuse to try and improve basketball, I refuse to give you more money

Contender

If true, how can you increase the athletic budget $50 to $60 million and not find a way to improve your 2nd biggest sport. I know some of the NIL money is separate pot, but still. Why do we still have the people running the athletic dept that we do

Answer

1 - Forbes Wake Forest 2 - Brownell Clemson 3 - Young Va Tech 4 - Odom - Va 5 - Capel Pitt There was no agenda here. Just a list of ACC current coaches. As one poster said, Brownell is clearly 1 or 2 here based on the data I provided, but he has had long stretches with no success and fans wanted him fired at Clemson for years. But now he has made 3 march madnesses in a row. Is that because of increased NIL, has he improved, I dont know. But he is the rare guy in todays game that has been given a long rope Forbes has not made march madness at all in 6 years at Wake. Young - Draw your own conclusion Odom - appears to be hot, but has the smallest sample size. But he has made march madness with 4 schools. He may be the real deal if UVa keeps funding up Capel had Blake Griffin when he was good. Other than that, he has done nothing. Maybe he is also underfunded Thanks for playing

Blind Coaches Resume

Rank these coaches based on their resumes. All have been a head coach at mid majors and power 4 schools. Before I get you cant compare these things, this is for fun. Obviously its not a perfect comparison because of the schools they coached, how long they were at the mid major before going to power 4, the history and tradition of the schools they were at and most importantly the financial resources the schools provide. But have some fun and rank them anyway. Coach 1 11 seasons 10 overall winning seasons 1 overall losing or .500 season 8 conference winning seasons 3 conference losing or .500 seasons 1 march madness appearance 0-1 record in march madness 2 conference regular season titles 2 conference tourney titles Coach 2 24 years 22 overall winning seasons 2 overall losing or .500 seasons 16 conference winning seasons 8 conference losing or .500 seasons 9 march madness appearances 6-8 march madness record (in it this year) 3 conference regular season titles 3 conference tourney titles Coach 3 24 seasons 13 overall winning seasons 11 overall losing or .500 seasons 12 overall conference winning seasons 12 overall conference losing or .500 seasons 7 march madness appearances 1-7 in march madness 4 conference regular season titles 6 conference tourney titles Coach 4 12 years 10 overall winning seasons 2 overall losing or .500 seasons 9 conference winning seasons 3 conference losing or .500 seasons 4 march madness appearances (in it this year) 1-3 in march madness 2 conference regular season titles 2 conference tourney titles Coach 5 17 seasons 10 overall winning seasons 7 overall losing or .500 seasons 8 conference winning seasons 9 conference losing seasons 4 march madness appearances 6-4 in march madness 1 conference regular season titles 1 conference tourney title Each coach has some positives and some cons

Injuries

Look at that. Duke lost 2 starters to injury about 10 days ago. They collapsed. Oh wait, they won 3 straight and won the acc title. We blame our season on lawal and johnsons injuries, yet somehow lawal came back and played the last 16 games and we were never ever able to regain chemistry. We were not as close as most think. We won 19 games but were 12-0 against teams with a losing record. Against teams with winning records we were only 7-13 with 3 of those wins against mid majors st joes, gmu and colorado st, none of who will make march madness, and who were ranked a lowly 84, 90 and 124 in the net. Take those away and we were 4-13 against teams with winning records from the power conferences and st marys and vcu (who both usually make the dance). Pull back the covers and peel the onion and what do you get, a team that wasnt competitive. Dont be fooled by 19 wins

Really

Like many posters here I dont realize that if Tobi and TJ were in those games we would have been comfortably ahead and without them we had team chemistry issues. Did you not read what I said. I started with in the first paragraph and closed in the final paragraph that injuries hurt this team and we might have won 3 or 4 more games. You missed the point totally. We had the advantage for 38 or 39 minutes in those games without those players. Its not asking a lot to play 1 or 2 more minutes without them to hold on. We wouldnt have collapsed against Stanford had TJ played. Are you serious. TJ didnt play and we had a 13 point lead with 3 minutes to go. So you are saying we dont need TJ to build a 13 point lead but we need him to not blow one. I pointed out losses to Stanford SMU and Miami and you respond to that by saying if Tobi and TJ are there those games arent close at the end. Thats an incredible leap. Our one excellent win of the season over UVa was lets see, without Tobi TJ or Dorn. I like Tobi and wish he wasnt a senior but he played the last 12 games and we were 4-7 (I wont count last night since Hansberry was out). Even without TJ, a starting 5 of Hammond Avdelas Hansberry Lawal and Bedford is pretty good. I would say one of the better ones than we typically have. The problem with posters who have inside information or coached before is you think you are smarter than everyone else. You have no clue the background of posters. The other point the staunch defenders of the program miss are this, we fans arent just fans, like a public business, we are shareholders of the program. Why is this, because we donate money to the athletic department and spend more money by having season tickets to multiple sports. And we are begged by the Athletic Department to give more. Our opinions are just as relevant as yours. Sports arent rocket science. Missing injured players or not, you have a lead for 38 or 39 minutes and consistently lose it, you collapsed ** Edited by Battlesuggs at 3/11/2026, 7:36:19 PM

Paying Players

I agree with you. Thats my point in all this across all college teams. The combined number of wins and losses amongst all teams basically results in a .500 winning pct. Every school ups their NIL budget and pays kids more each year to play. But the fact is someone still has to go 4-8 in football and 12-19 in basketball its basic math. At what point do people stop giving if their team doesnt improve or stays middle of the pact. How many consecutive years does someone want to pay for a $2 or $3 mil qb to finish 6-6 or maybe have a great year maybe once every for or 5 years

Failure to Make March Madness

Its fair to say we had injuries that greatly impacted the season and its also fair to say if we are in the bottom third in the ACC in NIL we finished in the standings about where our NIL budget is. But is also fair, despite the two things above, to be disappointed in the finish and not making March Madness. The two points above didnt cause us to lose at SMU, at Miami, home against Stanford or at least one of the Wake games. Hold on to 3 of those and its a great year and your in March Madness. The players on the court regardless of injury or NIL gave us decent leads after 38 minutes of play against SMU Stanford and Miami. We werent cursed in those games like some say here, we lost because we collapsed. The loss to SMU from halfcourt wasnt a miracle. The miracle was blowing a 4 pt lead in the final 8 seconds. The miracle was a 75 and 87 pct free throw shooter both missing the front end of one on ones in the final seconds. The miracle was a stupid in bounds play where all 4 players are lined up on the baseline and you throw it in the corner and get trapped and lose the ball out of bounds. The miracle against stanford was once again not the guy making a deep 3 but the fact we let a 13 point lead fall away in the final 3 minutes by poor shooting, poor decisions, poor coaching and poor defense. Against Miami we are up 4 with 2:34 to play and miss our remaining 4 shots as well as a free throw and lose by 1. Make any of those 5 shots and you probably win And dont say this team was ok in close games as they were 7-6 in games in ot or decided by 3 pts or less. While the home close wins against cal and uva were good wins, the other 5 close game wins, providence 9th in big east, south carolina 14th in sec, colo st 7th in lowly mountain west, syracuse 14th in acc and Elon 11th in the awful CAA were against terrible teams. Maybe these games shouldnt have been this close at the end. This team couldnt finish and isnt cursed. They just lost when it mattered most. Without injuries and with more NIL money could we have possibly won 3 or 4 more games and been safely in March Madness, absolutely yes. Do our factors make it an uphill battle. Yes they do. But the fact is, this team should have won those 3 or 4 games despite our negative factors. ** Edited by Battlesuggs at 3/11/2026, 3:00:06 PM ** Edited by Battlesuggs at 3/11/2026, 3:01:50 PM ** Edited by Battlesuggs at 3/11/2026, 3:03:02 PM ** Edited by Battlesuggs at 3/11/2026, 3:05:29 PM

ACC Bias

Why would the ACC and the officials conspire against us. This mindset that the ACC office is against us is stupid. There are now more non original ACC teams (12) than original (6) ACC teams in the conference. I am sure the ACC brass would have preferred us win because we were on the bubble and wf was no where near the bubble. The brass would want us in for the extra money it would generate the league. And there is no curse either, we dont win because we cant close out important games when it matters

Spot On

This Year: Football - bowl game - no Mens Soccer - NCAA tourney - no Mens Basketball - NCAA tourney - no Baseball - not looking good Whether we are underfunded or not, we turned a profit in the athletic department the last few years. Yet the teams are not good. Why does Whit Babcock have a job.

Perspective

I initially thought this team under achieved until I figured out this stat. We were 3-9 against teams we tied with or who were ahead of us in the ACC standings. We were 5-1 against teams below us in the standings. Bottom line, no matter what you want to blame it on, coaching, injuries, bad luck, poor team chemistry, we realistically could only beat teams who had worse records than us. Throw in what we thought were good wins at the time (Providence and South Carolina - who turned out to be at the bottom of their league), we just couldnt beat the better teams. But that is VT sports in a nutshell, in all sports. Still love the hokies, but the truth is what it is. Since joining the ACC mens basketball wins ACC games at a .446 clip. Young has won .46 of his ACC games. This year we won .44 of our ACC games. That is who we are.

Start

We outscored them for the last 38 minutes and 18 seconds. Unfortunately the 5-0 UVa start in the first 1 minute and 18 seconds of the game was the difference. And obviously it became 12-0 before we started playing. Way to come out prepared. And once we tied it at 51 UVa had layups or dunks in their halfcourt offense on 4 of their next 5 possessions. Way to take advantage of the momentum. And what a stupid ass challenge call that was. This was a winnable game just like Stanford SMU and Wake and we failed. Again.

Travel

Why do they let women travel when they shoot 3 pointers. You see it all the time. Both of UNCs 3s tonight were a travel. You cant leave the floor on both feet land on both feet and go back up. I dont care if it is their normal shooting motion and it gives you momentum to go back up. Its a travel. They call it in softball. Ask Emma

Big Credit

You have to give the players and coaches big credit in this one. They gave up a 23 pt lead on the road with it finally getting tied for the first time with about 8 minutes left. UVa at home had all the momentum and it felt like they would go right past us and we could have easily folded. But that never happened. I dont normally blame refs, but that 4th qtr was a joke. Every time UVa got in the lane in the 4th qtr it was a foul. Nice job ladies

VT Quad 1/2

If the NCAAs website on net rankings is correct, we are 32nd in Quad 1/Quad 2 wins and tied with at least 10 other teams. We are not 26th

Great job

Ladies. Nice bounce back beating both California teams. Glad Freelon came back in the game

Clemson

You praise us for having the 26th most quad 1/quad 2 wins. We are 7-8 in quad 1/quad 2 then you say we have better wins than clemson. Beating uva may make us have a better win than Clemson, but clemson is 10-6 in quad 1/2 games and has played fewer quad 4 games. Clemson is tied for 15th most quad 1/2 wins. Why do you always think you are so much smarter than everyone else. VT may not be the easist job and certainly we have no great historical record. But after you give a coach and staff 7 or 8 years, if you continuosly fail to make march madness its time to try something else. Hopefully we win out and make march madness ** Edited by Battlesuggs at 2/15/2026, 7:12:28 PM

March Madness

You criticize people when you dont like their post. We have a losing record in quad 1/quad 2 games. My main point is no one on the bubble should be on the bubble. They want to expand the tournament, the reality is it should only be 48-54 teams

Analysis of the Seasons Wins/Losses

The team is 17-9. There are 6 wins that dont really mean much, Bryant, Charleston Southern, UMES, Western Carolina, etc. That essentially makes them 11-9 against the teams from the better conferences and thats giving the Atlantic Ten and Mountain West the benefit of the doubt. Records shown are league play Wins Colorado St - Mtn West - 6-8 record George Mason - A 10 - 9-4 record St Joes - A 10 - 7-5 record Providence - Big East - 4-11 record South Carolina - SEC - 2-11 record Syracuse - ACC - 6-7 record Cal - ACC - 6-7 record Notre Dame - ACC - 3-10 record Georgia Tech - ACC - 2-11 record Clemson and UVa - 10-3 and 10-2 So of the 10 wins, 2 are good, the other 9 are all against teams with a losing record in their league or from mid majors who are no better than 3rd or 4th place in their league While the Stanford Wake and SMU late losses are what is really holding this teams record back, had we won those games those teams would have league records of 4-9, 3-9 and 5-7. So those are games you need to win because they are not good teams. At the time the Providence and South Carolina wins seemed like good wins, but those teams have proven to be terrible. Now I know other teams above us on the bubble have similar profiles, but lets be real here. Only Two good wins in 26 games and bad losses to Wake FSU Stanford. There are more bad losses than good wins. This team has under perfomed big time. The true reality is the last 5 or 6 at large teams that make the ncaa tournament dont deserve it

Knee Jerk

We are 6-7 in the conference. By my math, thats a losing record. I wouldnt call a losing record in the acc this year as well as 3 of the last 4 years a knee jerk reaction. Some people would like to see more. Maybe a new coach would do worse. But 7 years is a long time. We won an ACC title and for that we thank the staff for there efforts. But there has been nothing now for 4 years. A big win here and there which is offset by a losing overall conference record isnt a winning solution.

Props

Props to the team. I dont care who you are playing, down 3 starters and 19 points and you come back to win. That shows some guts and determination. Great work guys.

In State Mid Major

Its nice to finally beat an in state Mid Major in something and not have to sweat out the finish

Great Win

Could be Duffys best win. Very nice. Looked good as well

Suffren

Has wells replaced suffren in the rotation

This Year

This team is looking like a 12-16 or 14-14 overall team at best so Trent and Jenkins need to play 20 minutes a game each to see what they can do and try to develop them

Kennys Players

I agree Kenny may not have trusted or gotten the most out of those players, but my point was he brought them here, not Duffy.

Update

Northwestern Purdue and Texas Tech were 9-43 in their conferences last year. Thats where we are going after portal players. I wish the kids well and hope they are difference makers, but it sure seems Duffy has no ability to recruit

Recruiting/Portal

I am not criticizing any player, this is on the coaches. Why would anyone think this team would be improved. Our 3 portal players are jr/sr, yet 2 of them were never really starters at their prior schools and they all came from avg to below avg teams. Why would anyone think starting a 6 foot 1 player at center when they are a g/f would work. The reality is 4 of the top 6 players are Kennys players. Duffy hasnt really brought anyone in that has made a difference. If current freshman can do that, play them

Sad

If they dont win tomorrow this could easily be a 5 game losing streak. Would that put Duffy on the hot seat? Should a search committee be formed

Happened to me

Same date Oct 15 for $44 and change. I havent been to a tech game of any kind since attending a softball game in March 7 months ago. I disputed this with my bank. This is the third time Aramark and VT concessions has screwed me over. On the prior two occassions they kept running my credit card over and over and over every day for a week. My bank kept automatically freezing and unfreezing my card embarrassing me when I would get declined trying to make a purchase somewhere. Aramark reached out to me and the athletic department give me some concessions credit which I refused and they ultimately sent me a visa gift card. So this is the third time i have cancelled my credit card and had it reissued because of Aramark and the incompetence of the VT athletic department. Its so much fun having to go to all your automatic payments and change the account numbers. The laughable performances this athletic department puts on the field or court is backed up by their complete incompetence on all other fronts. And they send out this fan experience surveys. I also got a call today from the athletic department today asking if i am going to renew my football season tickets. To be honest, i havent made one game this year. But I thought the first question they asked me in their script further shows the athletic departments total lack of reality. "How are you enjoying your fan experience this year." Hello, I dont care about if the coke tastes good or you improved the potty experience. I want to see the team be competitive and win. End of story. Lets see about that experience, Vanderbilt Loss, ODU loss (are you kidding me), Wake Forest loss (are you kidding me). 1-3 at home with a win over useless Wofford and you are asking me if I am enjoying my fan experience. By a stinking clue.

Firing

Will the firing happen before midnight tonight or tomorrow morning. Will Babcock also be fired after this game or will he be fired at the end of the season

Will we ever win again

Yesterdays loss dropped Pry to 0-7 against the Power 4 conferences not counting the ACC. The sad part here is look who we have lost to. Not exactly a murderers row West Va at Lane. 5-7, 3-6 in Big 12 Purdue at Lane. 4-8, 3-6 in Big 10 Rutgers. 7-6, 3-6 in Big 10 Vanderbilt. 7-6, 3-5 in SEC Rutgers in Lane. 7-6, 4-5 in Big Ten Minnesota. 8-5, 5-4 in Big Ten South Carolina. ? Most likely 8-5, 4-4 in SEC If they Lose at home to Vandy this week Pry doesnt deserve to make it to game 3 I will say this, the defense looked much better yesterday. I think this team has a chance to go 6-6, maybe 7-5.

Laughable

Your takes are laughable. When you are the underdog and have sucked for 5 years you play aggressive not conservative. Thats playing 2 lose

Unreal

How do you get the ball with 3:42 left in the half with 2 time outs and the 2 minute warning and only get a real long fg attempt. This coaching is just pathetic

Season Ticket Renewal

Is it just me, or does anyone else find it silly that the athletic department has already sent out season ticket renewal reminders for football and basketball season tickets. Not only has neither season started, but heck, classes havent even started

Last 5 minutes

You can be a good rah rah guy, be a good recruiter and/or be a good x and o guy. But if you cant make the right decisions, at least some of the time, in the last 5 minutes of a game, it doesnt matter how good a coach you are, your team wont be successful

New Game Called - See if you can spot the improvement

So I provide no analysis here and once again I am only focusing on the men’s side. Just data. I will say again. Women’s sports under this administration, especially the big 3 sports (basketball, soccer and softball) have done quite well and I wish the men could mirror their success. For this bit of data, I have not cherry picked at all. I have included all the men’s team sports for the last 5 years that on the hokiesports web page show an overall and acc won/loss record. Because of the nature of golf, track, etc. where many of the events are invitationals with lots of schools participating, no won loss records are shown so they are not included. If someone has win/loss records for these other men’s sports and will provide them, I will gladly add them to the chart. But this is a game for everyone to play and please provide your answers. The game has 4 questions to answer: 1) How many sports by your own definition are doing well? 2) How many sports are trending up? 3) How many good seasons can you spot? 4) Which sport is close to breaking out? Again, this is just the last 5 years as it is most recent. Does it predict future results. No it doesn’t. Men’s Basketball with this years recruiting has given real hope for optimism next year. My posts all started the other day by the athletic department emailing us that they will embrace the new college rules and β€œkeep being competitive.” I merely asked a simple question, are the last 5 years or even 10 years (from my original post) the athletic departments definition of β€œcompetitive” or should we expect better results? I realize this is a multi sport post, but I put it here because I figure more people look at the football board and I didn’t want to limit it to subscribers answers only.
