For me , bottom line is we didn’t have the talent on this team to compete

I would be willing to bet that VT had the least amount of talent of any or almost any team in the ACC this year. I saw CMY's facial expressions several times during the game yesterday and he was like WTF did you do that for? Hopefully, he can get some real upgrades this offseason. Every position could use an upgrade IMO.

I blame UNREGULATED NIL for ruining college sports.
I fully support the concept of NIL but not this wild west unregulated deal we have now. I also have a lot of problem with the potential P2 split which may or may not happen in the coming years - I think that will be a death knell for college athletics.

and these school president's that have allowed a college education from their institutions to be cheapened to a footnote for football and basketball players.

They were pushed around offensively and defensively all year. Need to be stronger / tougher.

And it wasn't pure turnovers as much as it was just simply not anticipating and seeing the floor generally.
How often did someone drive to the hole without any apparent plan - resulting in a TO or low percentage shot? Way too frequently. How often did you see a ball get to the paint, see defenders converge and then see the ball kicked out to an open man for a high percentage shot? Very rarely. How often did you see a pass go to someone in an even worse position than the passer - forcing either a bad shot or turnover? Way too often. How many times did you see someone being a beat too slow and giving up an open shot and instead making a bad pass? Or the inverse, being a beat too slow and missing the open pass and instead settling for a low percentage shot? Again, both way too often.
The list is endless. This team played hard but just had a collective low basketball IQ.

“A lot was missing [this year],” Young said. “Just call it what it is. They’re great kids and a pleasure to work with. We’ve got to get more talented, and we’re going to, quick. … I’m not living through that again.”

Insane in a good and bad way.
The NIL will definitely be a good boost but it’ll be interesting to see how MY staff targets. Typically young has a swing for the fences approach that often means better fit prospects are missed out on. I remember GC writing about that with this past years HS recruiting class I believe (or may two HS recruiting classes).

Agreed though, a interesting thing to say on the record.

We can forget being truly competitive. He has proven he can coach if ghee has talent. Success now is a function of $$ instead of building relationships with young men.

decent core of supporting talent, several of whom should take a step up next year (fresh to soph). Up his NIL budget and if he can't get us into a post-season tournament the next two years (at least NIT both years) then I think we might have to consider a change.

That's not to say he was dealt a good hand. He wasn't. And in some ways he got more from this team than he should have. But mentally this team showed very little improvement and in some ways regressed.

to “make the NIT once every three years or we may have to consider making a change!”

do people realize that in his other 5 seasons at VT, he has won a grand total of ONE ACC tournament game?
The ACCT win was wonderful. I loved every minute of it. Never thought I'd see it.
But in the totality of Young's career, it is a remarkable anomaly, not the standard.
It is really sad how quickly VT has reverted to a program where a career barely-above-.500 coach is viewed as the best we can hope for.

These guys aren’t great but the utter and absolute inconsistency displayed night after night falls to the coach. Add the success of many recruited misfits at other schools and one has to wonder what’s up or not up in Hahn Hurst.

Tech over money. Give the guy a competitive budget and we can have success and continuity.

get his system, and his system taking multiple years to get is outdated in this world. He could also borrow an out of bounds play or two from Buzz Williams. Overall though what we saw yesterday was a bunch of guys that panic in crunch time and have all year. I guarantee you Rech has been told a million times not to go to the corner like that. Schutt playing hot potato with the basketball any time it came to him. And the free throws? Geez. Bad players with poor basketball IQ.

the players hands came out.
CMY had thought he would be playing this year with Rice Pedulla, and Nickel. Instead he ended up with all role players. It will have to be addressed in this next portal.

question root causes to include coaching. That could certainly be fair and constructive critique. But blaming all the players for leaving after last year? That's pretty much strictly funding issues. Players leave for more money. PERIOD. I don't think that's on young. That's on all Hokies everywhere, both employed and alums that don't do what it takes to fund a good basketball team.

Transfer to a title by beating 2 Final 4 teams back to back in their 3rd & 4th straight nights playing…you think that coach is the problem?

I want to see him do well, but he didn't even come close to dominating the mid-major conference he was in his whole career - and that was pre-NIL.

He coached at wofford…. When Mike young got there wofford had zero ncaa tournament appearances, when Mike young left…. They had 5….Virginia tech has 13 NCAA tournament appearances…..13… that’s it. Mike young has 2 of them…. Let’s be for real….

I think he’s a great fit for VT and as good of a coach as we can find unless we put TONS of money into becoming a bball power and just decide to hire someone like Bruce Pearl or Will Wade.
I’d rather not do that and support him with how HE wants to build a successful program.

Are we not competitive with coaching salary to them? Just asking.

It’s their sole revenue sport. They sell out a 7,000 seat arena because they have a brand & more successful history than we do in the sport
It’s also a school that takes players we often can’t get admitted into VT. Yes that’s a thing

He’s probably the best our program can expect to ever get. He’s a good coach. We’re a second rate program in a conference that is rapidly becoming second rate.

That’s all on the players not listening or not getting it
Did he recruit the players? Yep. But he also just had to take who he could to field a team after last year. Nickel, Pedulla, Collins, Kidd all left for more $
He took a chance on Miller that backfired and no he didn’t know what Miller was involved in

had the budget is crazy. This roster was a bargain basement band of misfit toys. He was simply working within the budget that he was given. Bottom level spending is going to yield bottom level results. If he can not produce better results with competitive spending levels, then we can have a conversation about how he isn't getting it done. I just hope that the revenue sharing sharing money makes us competitive in spending next year and affords him the opportunity to prove it.

Our talent was bottom of the barrel and we still won several ACC games, which in hindsight was a minor miracle. Coach Young was not the issue here. A near-total lack of talent relative to our competitors is what sunk us.
