It had my interest (a little) while the US was still in it. But now that they have been knocked out, I could care less. I did enjoy seeing the Scots partying like it was 1999 along with the Vikings. Great stuff on social media too.

It is clearly broke in my mind
But I guess it's hard to argue with something that is, by far, the most popular sport in the world. It just seems like there is too much gray area with the clock especially at the end of the game.

Yes. Absolutely
Can you imagine if the refs in college football had the same discretion? As much as I have grown to actually sort of like this whole world cup, the whole clock thing makes me cringe and sort of illegitimizes it to a degree. Yesterday, Norway had clearly dominated Brazil and was ahead 2-0 until a late penalty kick made it 2-1. The clock said +7 or something to that affect and they just kept on playing for about ten extra minutes. Imagine if Brazil would have scored again at +9 and tied it up and went on to win? It makes no sense to me.

I have never been a soccer fan
But I must admit this world cup thing is pretty cool. I have enjoyed the social media with the Scots and Vikings and seeing the reactions of all the various fans to food in our country. It is hilarious. And the games have been good too.
The one thing that I don't agree with is the way soccer keeps the time. The clock keeps running no matter what with injuries, out of bounds balls, hydration breaks, etc. Then they arbitrarily add unknown and nowhere near precise amounts of time back on the clock. Can you imagine if this is how the clock worked for the NFL or college football?

Most people don't know what it means to be a 5 star recruit
Being a 5 star recruit means that the high school player is projected to be a first round pick in the NFL draft. Since there are only 32 teams in the NFL, there are 32 5 star recruits in the entire country. In other words, there are very few of them in existence.

His team, Rye Cove, played for the state championship this year. I guess there is always a chance that he will come home in a year or two.

An ole E&H Wasper
He was at the helm at his alma mater when E&H went from DIII to DII and left the program in an excellent position for success which they are now enjoying. What a great career he had! RIP Coach!

Until I saw Fernando play a few games. I was sort of a fan of Pavia until he started running his mouth. My opinion quickly changed and I realized he was a punk and so did everyone in the NFL. He might have a future in Canada if he learns just a little about humility.

Very few people have any idea about what it takes to be a coach at any level. Heck, our high school coach works his regular teaching job during the day and spends more than 40 hours a week just on football.

There is only one right answer
Miami. I have despised Thug U since the 80's before I was a Hokie fan. One of my fondest memories was when Miami played Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl for the national championship. These two teams were polar opposites and underdog PSU beat them. It was good vs evil and good won that day.

This season's success lies on Drone's shoulders
Hopefully with new and better coaching from the OC he will take that step that we hoped he was going to take last year. He seemed very hesitant at times and his long ball accuracy was awful. Had he hit half his long throws, they may well have won 2-3 more games with just that factor alone. He also seemed to go to his first read and if that wasn't available he would get happy feet and/or take his eyes off downfield and tuck and run too quickly IMO.
Hopefully QB #2 is ready if he gets hurt. Schlee seemed pretty good until he got hurt last year.

Shoulda, Woulda
Many people fail to understand the importance of a top-tier, dynamic quarterback in college football. VT did not have even a mediocre QB last year. Take Syracuse's Kyle McCord, GT's Haynes King or someone similar and add him to VT's team last year and they probably only lose a couple of games. After Drone's great start the season before, everyone expected him to take a step forward last year and it simply didn't happen. Somehow, he actually regressed. I know he wasn't healthy for a good portion of the season and I am not ready to throw him under the bus yet. But, IMO, the major reason for VT's lack of success in 2024 was because of inconsistent and, sometimes, poor QB play. It's just that simple and it applies to most teams as well. Take Cam Ward off of Miami's team from last year and they are .500. The importance of the QB can't be overstated.

I would be willing to bet that VT had the least amount of talent of any or almost any team in the ACC this year. I saw CMY's facial expressions several times during the game yesterday and he was like WTF did you do that for? Hopefully, he can get some real upgrades this offseason. Every position could use an upgrade IMO.

I had a different take
When watching the game and particularly the first half, my thoughts were man CMY is a great coach. He took FSU completely out of their game plan and dictated the game and how it was going to be played. The players hustled and played good defense and ran the offense very well. I give CMY tons of credit for a well coached game and an excellent game plan.
When players get comfortable and play smart and free and hustle like hell, good things happen. Particularly when they don't turn the ball over and hit a few 3's along the way. It is tough to take a bunch of new players and try to mesh them together and expect them to perform perfectly right out of the gate. A good measuring stick for any coach is if the team improves throughout the course of the season and I believe that is what we are seeing.

Lots of history with E&H football
Back way back when, E&H played the University of Tenn and VT in football. E&H played in the Tangerine Bowl as well.
There is even a play that is still used today called the "Emory and Henry". I heard coach Saban mention it on college gameday this year.

Coach Johnson was something else!
I have always thought he could have been a very successful coach at a D1 program. I think he loved E&H and just decided to make a career of it at little ole E&H. He was definitely gone too soon.

CMY certainly has Coach Johnson's DNA flowing through his veins
I played football at E&H and Coach Johnson was actually my position coach. The school was so small that the head basketball coach was also the secondary coach for football. CMY was a senior when I was a freshman. I can assure you that there is not another head coach in America who preaches mental toughness, hustle, and playing smart more than CMY based on his teaching from Coach Johnson. He was a remarkable man and tough as nails and a superb coach who influenced my life more than I ever realized at the time. He was an army ranger who was a platoon leader in the 101st Airborne Div during Viet Nam and saw some serious combat. He instilled discipline and the 'never quit" attitude with all his players. He is a legend at Emory & Henry and is probably CMY's biggest influence. Coach Johnson has an impressive coaching tree as well.

He has proven otherwise
He put together a team of misfits and was competitive from the get go. You mention players not staying with him. Of course not, these players were paid hundreds of thousands of dollars more to play elsewhere. Any time a player like Lynn Kidd leaves and we find out he was offered $750k then it is going to be tough sledding in Blacksburg. Every year the amount of money has increased and it is obvious to anyone that VT is not spending near the amount of money in comparison to many other schools. CMY can compete with anyone provided he has enough $$ to buy talent. But he is SOL without enough NIL money.

CMY is trying to compete while be totally handcuffed with the lack of NIL money. Had he had the 4 starters who left this past year on this year's roster and been able to add a few players to complement them through the portal then this year would be totally different. As it turned out, he had to scramble to get players to fill the roster and his best portal guy wasn't on the team a week before the season started.
There is no way that you, or anyone else, can accurately say he is "not suited for this era of college athletics." All that CMY has ever known is basketball and we are lucky to have him.

The team would have been pretty good had not 4 of 5 starters left for bigger NIL pay days elsewhere. And then his best transfer coming in isn't on the team 2 weeks before the season started because of his trouble at his previous school. Everything that could have gone wrong went wrong and, in no way, do I believe it is on the coach. Either pony up with some real NIL money for basketball or they will never be competitive no matter who the coach happens to be.

Prime started coaching in high school before Jax St and then CO.
Nobody in their right mind would would hire Vick or anyone else to have their first coaching job as the HC in a P4 league.

Miami is the exception
I would pick any team to make the playoffs over Miami regardless of what conference they happen to be in. Sorry but my hatred for Thug U goes back to the 80's. BTW, I think Bama would steam roll the Hurricanes and I am delighted that they are not in the playoffs or have a chance to play in the ACC championship game. Had they not had Cam Ward, they would be a .500 team and Cam is gone next year.

I have despised Miami longer than I have been a Hokie fan and rejoice anytime they fail or lose. They have been a fraud all season and there is no way they deserve to be in the playoffs over Alabama. Take away Cam Ward and they are a .500 team.

Name one redeeming quality he had
His players didn't want to go to a bowl game so they tried not to win which is like a mutiny. Many players left the program under Fuente. He ruined recruiting relationships in VA that took decades to build. He thought it was a good idea to focus on TX to get recruits all the way to Blacksburg. He only won with Beamer's players the first couple of years. He had the personality of a rock. He had no culture. He was a horrible recruiter. He ended the bowl streak. Most importantly, his team regressed each year. Other than that, he was great.

Fuente did not have a single positive trait
I don't get the comparison. I wouldn't hire Fuente to run a hotdog stand. Everyone complains about Pry's staff but Fuente's was infinitely worse once Bud Foster left. Everyone is disappointed about the season and there were several games that we should have won that we didn't. I am an optimist. The culture is drastically better under Pry. Heck, the players had a mutiny against Fuente. Pry inherited a roster that had the least amount of talent in 30 years. It is a wonder that he won a single game. While this year's record was the same as last year (not including the bowl game) the largest deficit in a loss was 10 points and that was to Clemson. I look for the team to take another step next year. I believe Pry will be very active in the portal as well.

Not if APR and his buddies play well
McCord is a pure pocket passer and if VT can pressure him anywhere near what Pitt did last night he will be held in check. Luckily, he is not much of a runner. He takes a lot of chances with the ball too. His O-line looked bad which didn't help his cause.

Every good pass D starts with
a great pass rush. It makes the secondary's job exponentially easier if the QB is running for his life. As seen last night, McCord is not overly athletic and is a gunslinger. 3 Pick 6's in a half is something that I have never seen. I guess Ohio St saw something in him that they believed he was not the guy to lead them to the promise land. And I can believe it after watching last night. Syracuse's OL looked pretty bad too. APR and company should give him fits.

Not giving him enough credit
Has nothing to do with him being a Hokie. His resume will speak for itself. He may not be the tallest but I wouldn't say he is small by any stretch. Packing 210 lbs on a 5'9" frame is solid with a low center of gravity. He is hard to bring down and gets tons of yards after contact. No way he is a practice squad player. Not sure how some are saying he is slow either. He has ripped several long runs and I don't remember him being caught from behind. He is every bit as good as K Herbert IMO and we are lucky as hell that we picked him up in the portal.

VT & Nebraska have many similarities
Both of these schools have among the best fan bases in the country and both desperately want to get back to national prominence. Of course, Nebraska has a much better history than VT with multiple national championships but the two schools football programs are in similar places scratching and clawing trying to get back to their winning ways of old.

I am thinking VT should dominate. Vandy gets a FG sometime during the game and then a TD during garbage time late in the 4th quarter. The D looks like days of old and is stifling and perhaps gets a defensive score.

FSU thrived with last year's QB
The DJ kid formerly from Clemson and Oregon St is not in the same universe as Jordan Travis. Plus, they graduated a ton of talent. I don't see FSU running the ACC this year. I believe Clemson will be solid and NC State and VT to surprise many folks. Not real sure about Louisville. Based on the past 20 years, I think Miami will be Miami and go 7-5 even with all their talent. VT must beat Rutgers to get on a roll to lead into conference play and that will be no easy task.

Versatile
I watched his highlight film and it looks like he can do many things extremely well on either side of the ball. Depending on the roster at the time, he could line up as running back or receiver. He is a very elusive and has great speed with size. I believe he could also play safety on defense and return punts. Great recruiting win against some serious competition like PSU, UT and Georgia.

Not all will pan out
Some of these 4 & 5 star players do not reach their potential and some are even busts altogether. Devon Hunter is a perfect example. He was almost a 5 star and ended up being mostly a special team player throughout his career at VT. Some of these rising seniors will likely crush their senior seasons and become 4 stars.

Recruiting VA
Pry is having to re-establish the relationships within the state with high schools that Fuente neglected or, for the most part, ignored. This is already paying dividends but should be a huge deal for the future IMO. He is getting 757 players which is a very good thing. The class that he is putting together currently doesn't seem as strong as last years but that is subject to improve with time (hopefully). He has done very well in the portal.

I don't think he would be ranked as the highest possible 4 star (97) without that being his legit height and weight. 247 factors in everything including height and weight when they rank high school players. I assume he was behind several other highly ranked DT's at Bama.

Yes I agree about the rankings.
But he was most likely behind multiple 4-5 stars and buried on the depth chart. Bama stacks DL talent like cordwood. He is a little undersized but I bet he has a huge motor to make up for it. I still believe he will make an immediate impact. Time will tell but I’m glad he’s now a Hokie.

DT's will improve the entire D's success
It is amazing what a dominant front 4 can do for the defense. Obviously, if a DT or DE can make a tackle in the run game it is a good thing. But also with a good pass rush, it makes the secondaries jobs much easier. The D had great success last year getting after the QB and I think those numbers will jump even higher this year which should translate into more INT's as well. A QB running for his life makes mistakes and turns the ball over.

This dude is a beast
I think this new transfer may be the highest rated player on the team now according to 247 ranking. They show his grade as a 97 which is the highest grade one can have as a 4 star. A 98 is a 5 star. Defensive line depth is critical and he is a great addition to the team. I believe the defense will be among the best in the conference. The only position group that concerns me is the O-line now and maybe they can pick up another transfer to help. The D-line should be much improved this year.
