Thatβs what I am thinking too. Although
Zoe struggled offensively in ACC play. Donβt know if itβs because she got tired from catching so much. Would like to see if another catcher can block the wild pitches more consistently.

I assume we would not be committed to offering a 5th
year. And just an issue for the first year, right?

I think several of our current players would be interested in playing
a 5th year. Might actually lighten the academic load for them as well.

Don't get the critique here. Just stated what's happening.
She's not having a good start to the season. Hopefully it turns around for her. If not, she could follow our other Hokies to the PSL where they are having success.

Went there last time and it was really fun. The entire team and coaching
staff came into a sports bar owned and themed by a VT guy and talked and took pictures with fans. Unexpected treat. Got to meet Young and get a picture with Cattoor, Basile and Mutts.

Good point. I had to check. In 12 games, she pitched 44.1
innings and gave up 25 ER for a 3.94 ERA. Against great competition but far from dominating.
Oddly, she pitched better in the WCWS - 29.2 innings, 10 ER, 2.36 ERA which is really good. The Super Regional against Florida was terrible for her. 8.2 innings and 10 ER and brought her total post season numbers down.

Agree. Last year several great college rookie players were reduced to
mediocrity in this league. NC may be looking at her value from strictly a PR perspective, name recognition. But, no guarantee she will dominate AUSL like she did college. But, we see this in other sports, where players are compensated more in college than they are in the pros.
So, it may be she is not that passionate about playing.

I would assume most players have made
their decision before the end of the season or once they had their season-end talk with Coach Pete. Most want to get their name out there ASAP once the decision has been made. So, I think that's a good indication that no one else is going into the portal. Sophomores who don't see themselves breaking into the lineup by their Junior years are most at risk. So far, knock on wood, we have not had any starters leave for NIL reasons.

And I am sure LSU fans are going "How can they be ahead
of us after we beat them twice handily in regional?" Which several have been saying with respect to UGA being ahead of us. In a 50+ game season, a couple of head-to-head games are not going to have that much weight.

I wonder if Pete will give Mazz a shot at every day DP. Don't
know if there is another Nora in the ranks of those who haven't played yet.

For sure and note that as great as our offense is, the pitching has
to improve to get us to the next level.

Zoe had a decent offensive year but she faded in ACC play. If someone can
emerge offensively, she could be challenged.

In AT's last two years our team averaged 3.6 runs/game. We hit
.268 with 34 HRs in 2007 and .240 with 21 HRs in 2008. I saw that we won the ACC tourney in 2007 with AT winning all 4 games and giving up a total of 1 run over 4 games. Poppin's it wouldn't have raised much money back then if you tied gifts to offense.

Jordan made some great plays but that is the highest number of errors
a player has made on our team in a while. When Peck was a freshman, she played 3rd.
Great glove, problems throwing. She made 15 errors that year and that felt like a lot.
Jordan only made 4 last year so not sure what happened there.

I had not seen that. So it's been a lot more active than I realized.
Maybe that is a good sign for us. Although I don't know that any non-starter transfers would hurt us at this point. But, there is a log jam if we have especially if we have any strong incoming freshman. Thanks for posting that.
I did see this. "The softball transfer portal officially opens on June 8 after the conclusion of the Womenβs College World Series." So, I guess players can declare but they can't be approached by teams.

Doubt the money is there for that in softball. It will happen in baseball
before softball I think.

I've noticed that transfer announcements are starting to come (saw one
from Arizona and one from South Carolina). I had thought that players would wait until the WCWS was done. But, maybe not. I feel good about our pitchers staying but am thinking that some Frosh and Soph non-pitchers may be looking to transfer with just two starters graduating. Is it a good sign that we haven't heard anything yet? Or will most wait until WCWS is over?

Right, teams get credit for their SOS and their record against that
schedule. If we had beaten them an additional time they would have still finished ahead of us in the conference standings. The difference - they swept GT.

In another comment you implied she was only good because her
strike zone was 2x the size of ours in BR. So, I think you would just credit her success to her oversized strike zone.

Good info. But, any pitcher that gets that will have to be able to carry a
team. Havenβt seen that yet with ours. Layton only one that I donβt have a good feel for.

Can be, but Grein wasnβt about money. Most, if not all, players that have
Left VT has been about playing time.

Agree. RPI drove VT and FSU's #3 and #2 overall seed in
2022. We weren't complaining then. And lower seeded SEC teams knocked out both teams at home. So I don't think RPI overrates SEC teams or underrates ACC teams. The only way to make that case is for ACC to perform better in the NCAA.

UNC staff would be upgraded by any of our 3 for sure. But, I am pretty
confident except for Layton. Pitchers don't mind being 1 of 2 top pitchers. But, 1 of 3 might feel different to someone who thinks they could be 1 of 2 somewhere else.

Clemson is the only ACC team with a comparable situation to VT.
Why bet? Just to put forth the VT victim narrative? Until Clemson is faced with this situation, we have no way to know.

We put a lot of weight on the SEC wins. And while the UGA wins
are still impressive, the USCe and Auburn wins didn't turn out to be.

Right. She wants to hit. If there aren't any strong hitters who could
fill the DP spot Aldridge vacated, I think Mazz would be happy to fill that role full time if that means pitching less.
Softball Board

I don't think any pitchers are leaving. There is not that much $$ for
transfers in softball. And while our pitchers are very good, they can't carry a team on their own and I don't think they would demand big bucks. Mazz and Bree are from this area. Layton is from Indiana but she did come here and got a lot of opportunity to prove herself.

We seemed to hit the ball well the first two innings, even when we made
outs. And then we struggled the rest of the game. Don't know what happened there. The first thought is they adjusted their pitch calling and we couldn't adjust. Or maybe their pitcher just got better at hitting her spots.
