Posting History (103)

Its not about any of those things,

no matter what you hear. this is about football (so no one cares about the other sports) and its about name recognition and being well known. They are trying to reach the average fan more. They do this by adding big "Brands". average fan (one not associated with VT) probably will not rearrange their Saturday to watch VT play most SEC teams. Th n number of VT fans not affiliatedwitht the school is nowhere as near as the number of lets say UNC fans not affiliated with UNC. they don't have to be good they have to be recognized. I hope its not the case, but most "experts" do not include VT in this

thats a big IF

why have texas and oklahoma not gotten out of theirs if its so worthless?

First off

no one has seen the most recent amended GoR. Not saying it is not malleable but no one knows about that for sure And who is this published tweet from who? the thing going around from the guy from swim swam? that is the mist likely place this story would break... ** Edited by vtka93 at 7/7/2022, 1:56:27 PM

No i know there is....

But you don't see that that "huge" following will not bring in enough of an increase in TV revenue to INCREASE the annual payout to each conference member. if you dont see that maybe you are the one residing under a rock or you need to remove your orange and maroon glasses.

but the SEC network is already available in NOVA.

and no, NOVA is not strong enough to increase the TV revenue by enough right now to give every member in the conference a higher payout. There is a reason the big 10 did not include oregon and washington, and its because they would not beneift EVERY member's payout. This isn't so much about TV markets (because the SEC is pretty much in every major market right now) its about adding valuable brands. brands that increase your revenue enough to be worth bringing in for all the current memebers. I g

Yeah i thought that too

but still, see too many posts saying we bring so much stuff to a conference that we would be included. "we will bring the DC market". ha ha ha ** Edited by vtka93 at 7/7/2022, 11:04:44 AM

how are they going to neogtiate

their way out of the GoR? what ACC school is going to allow that? And if it did happen, wouldn't that open a window for other schools to now try abd get out of it? There are other sports in the ACC are under it, why wouldn't they be for football? And why would you give ND the flexiiblity to bail? No way any other ACC school votes for this and there is no way we could negotiate a deal close to the Big 10 (but i am not sure what you mean by "close") just adding teams does not make us more desirable for TV. you have to add the right teams and there are few of them left. teams that will actually increase your revenue enough for every member to benefit. we already have 3 of those teams in our confernce

for those of you who think VT is shoe-in for a spot

in a P2 conference, look how this guy explains "TV math". lots of people think we are going to 24 team conferences, but it may not add up

They want schools that will

increase the tv revenue enough to make sure every member's yearly payout increases. that is all they care about. Not "potetnail". they don't care about what you do with your resources and what the experience is lke. They are trying to attract TV viewers, not people to come "experience" it live.

They wouldn't stay.....

because this deal is not as great as the big 10 one. good is not excellent

I agree. SEC is fine with ND being independent

and am not sure they would do anything to push them to the big 10. That is why i believe the new expanded playoffs will give ND access as an independent, so they are in no hurry to do anything

obviously didnt understand the beginning

It was made very clear at the beginning that this is no prediction at al And i do agree with you on the Tony Siracusa part in that I think they made it seem easier to break overcome than it is. BTW he is not just some guy he is the managing editor of the last word on college sports. But there is some logic to what they said

Key there is you picked SEC games. And

still if you look at ratings for us in "big" games that do not involve SEC we are not really watched.... So why does the SEC need/want us? they don't. If they pick any school, they will sell the game out probably, but no one will watch it on tv, at least not because we are playing. over the last 6 seasons or we are like mid 30's in average veiwership. more people watch WVU than us in that time

oh yeah, and I lived in San Diego. when i went to watch in

bars, it was not packed. And very who were there knew anything about VT. Anyway this is all anecdotal evidence. Facts are facts, we are not a very watched team unless we play someone big, the masses aren't; watching to see us ** Edited by vtka93 at 7/6/2022, 6:17:58 PM

And what a surprse the peach bowl was sold out with UGA in it!

this link shows you our tv ratings in BCS bowls. notice we are either last or next to last for everyone except the championship game https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/college-football-playoff... we are not a school the averge fan wants to watch,

so you cherry picked games

that were once-in-a-lifetime things. Of course the sugar bowl sold out, it was our first BCS game ever and we played texas whihc is close to new orleans and their first big game in a whle. did you go to the orange bowl against nebraska the next year? very little interest. all other sugar bowls/orange bowls we went to were not sold out. I literally saw people dropping handfuls of tickets on the ground before the Michigan game. average fan does not care about VT-michigan, or VT-stanford, or vt-kansas As far as usc game at fedex. most usc fans i met were not in from california. they were transplants ont the east coast who finally got a shot to see them live. but again you missing the point. it is not about us selling out a few big games. it is about someone who is not affiliated with us making time to watch us on TV. we were the 62nd most wached team in 2021. behind UVa. how did you leave off the game in bristol in your argument? but all this is besides the point.

and the rest of the country does not care if they get to see

VT-fla VT-uga VT-texas, VT-auburn they want to see fla-tx, uga-tx, auburn-tx or fla-ND, UGA-ND, Tx-ND it would be the equivalent of thinking we (VT fans) are waiting in the edge of our seats to see usc-purdue

I don;t believe there are that may games.....

that can be created. yes, you used VT and i will do the saem but it could be any number of schools. Will Georgia fans care they play us? wull texas fans care? betterr yet will average joe want to watch 1-4 vt play 5-0 texas or georgia? To interest a large unaffiliated audience. maybe vt-a&m and VT-Tennesee but i dont t think you can throw us with any other team and say people ouotside of VT will love it. its not about getting VT (or whatever school) to watch it's about creating matchups EVERYONE wants to see. VT fans will watch no amyter what. their opponent's fans will watch. its getting the people with no vested interest to watch. I will give you an example. I lived in southern california in the mid 90s. after tech played at 9:00 am there was always some pac 12 games on. I just randomly started watching oregon and just had fun watching them. Next thing i know they start winning and did so in an entertaining way. To this day i try to catch games where oregon plays someone of note, like usc, UW or oregon state. if they are playing arizona i dont really care too much. I am not going to watch south carolina play kentucky, but i will watch auburn alabama. thats the kind of games that need to be created Now i would tell the SEC, let us in and we will play Tennessee in bristol every year. new (possibly "bigger") version of the world's largest cocktail party.

Not sure its just unc and ND

but agree there are a small few "brands" that would make sense. i would include oregon and probably clemson and fsu. but i agree that just adding to add does not makr sense. Conferences should only be adding schools that guarantee to increase your revenue enough to make it so that every member also gets a larger yearly amount. just adding 8 schools will probably not do that

exactly what I have been saying

People are assuming we are going to 24 team super conferences. if for example, the big 10 does get 100 mill payout each for member with their new contract, then the 8 teams they add will need to almost double their tv contract to keep that amount for 24 teams. Are there 8 teams that do that?

Then i tend to agree

let's go play some sort of division 1a football with the pac 10 leftovers and big 12 teams and whatever is left of ACC and group of 5. have our own national championship. see how sustainable this 40-48 team " league" is

Don't think it is population-driven

the more " desirable" schools like Notre Dame, Clemson, and oregon.are not from big populous areas seems to be more bout name recognition or "brand". the bigger the brand the more desirable. Not sure our brand is big enough to help us. I think we are borderline. Its not like they are not going to show games in virginia if vt or uva is not in one of these conferences

biut why exapnd unless

you know for sure that the teams you bring in will at minimum contribute enough to keep each school getting the current payout? if each big 10 school is on course to get 100 mill, do they invite any school/combo that does not contribute that much to the tv deals? i guess when do you stop adding because the extra schools you add will start to decrease the amount the others get each year

Have to disagree

Tech is in much better standing than it was 30-40 years ago. Not 100% sure it is totally football related but it had an effect. I will say my son goes to tech now and I am in a parent facebook group and there are constant posts about how students get tickets to games because they don't want to miss out. Maybe the performance of the team doesn't; matter so we could be ok if we aren't in a P2?

Why are so many people thinking that they go to 24 members...

What is the benefit to go to 24 for the big confernces? Are their 8 teams that increase the revenue enough to make it worthwhile? for argument's sake let's say each school in the big10 and SEC is going to get 100 mill a year with their new tv deals. wouldn't that mean that any school you invite from here on out has to increase those deals by at least 100 mill in extra revenue minimum to be "worth" adding? I am no business major but is there not a point of diminishing returns here?

pretty sure the donation

to leave will be way north of 100-150 million. And don't leave fox out of this, they are just as guilty as ESPN now. While I hate finnebaum I think he is the one who said something to the effect of "this is coke vs pepsi and no one else matters". you are right it is not fan-driven or performance-based. it is based on populariity and brand

now would be a good time

For the Pac 10/12 commissioner to use this as a reason to redo/sign another GoR. Let them see who is thinking about leaving or not

is it the amount they would have made

or the amount they will make in another conference? how do you determine the amount they would make over 14 years when that can change, especially if there is an expanded playoff that includes the ACC. one thing people also do not seem to mention in all of this is the time/cost of the inevitable lawsuit.

maybe they don't want anyone to know yet

maybe there isn't one. who knows besides the ACC i assume i would like for them to maybe come out and clarify some of this. ** Edited by vtka93 at 7/4/2022, 11:00:17 PM

no way

the tv contract will only be for 240 million. Isn't CBS looking for a conference ot telveise now?

yeah

That's the biggest porbelm I see with it being so large, but then again our payout maybe become smaller if we don't do anything. if we aren'tl invited to the big 10 or SEC we are doomed.no way another conference is formed and makes the money the big 10 and sec will make.

I wondered the same thing

do I continue to watch as much as i did before? I don't know that answer. not sure it drops 50% but there could be some backlash. what happens if ESPN can't survive as a streaming network once cable is irrelevant? Disney shareholders already don't like it.

I think they may be nuts if they do

the PAC 10 has little value right now. the interest in college football is not big enough in the west. i would atleast cut out oregon state and wazzu. I think it would better for a "merger" between some ACC schools and Big12 VT UVA Duke UNC Clemson FSU MIami GT Baylor Kansas KSU Iowa st Okie St TCU Tex Tech WVU BYU Houston Cincy UCF maybe even SyracusePitt/bc/NC state. Syracuse and bc would give a decent northeast presence make 4 pods of 6 teams. for football you play the 5 teams from your pod and rotate to play another 6 team pod every year it would also become the premier basketball conference. imagine games involving unc, uva, duke, kansas, bayor, texas tech, vt, fsu, miami, wvu, etc. ** Edited by vtka93 at 7/4/2022, 5:01:08 PM

did your 5 hour calc brain figure out

if there is a limit to the expansion? let's say the big10 and sec with16 teams have a payout of 105 million per team. wouldn't that mean that each team they add would have to increase their tv deal by at least that much, otherwise why add more teams and diminsih the payout per team? I don't know the answer but if adding clemson, fsu, vt, unc doesn't increase their tv deal by like 500 million what is the point? How much do the networks (ESPN) have ot give out? will disney allow this when they are trying to move to streaming? but i do agree we need to be proactive PS - i can only do math when it attached to chemistry ** Edited by vtka93 at 7/4/2022, 4:29:02 PM

wouldn't be surprised

i could definitely see that happening. what really is the point of the SEC/Big 10 continuing to add more members? reports seem to say that the new deals for each will give each team 100 mill a year. if you add another team, they have to increase your tv deal by at least 100 million to make it worth your while. when do you get to a point of diminishing returns?

i would agree mostly

because it hasn't really hit us directly yet. There is still thus hope the Grant of rights will save us. small hope ND will join with us. That's probably the biggest thing, waiting to see what ND does (if anything). There may be an assumption that it will be ok because we will just go to the SEC (which is certaily no guarantee). The thing is we do not know what is going on behind closed doors. there are reports about teams leaving ACC for other conferences and where they could go, but nothing I have seen where the ACC itself has responded or is even considering being proactive

and that probably won't happen

so either something is done proactively to try and survive or they go ahead and fold and let teams go to the highest bidding conference. at least half of the ACC will get screwed in this scenario. ** Edited by vtka93 at 7/4/2022, 4:09:29 PM
