Stay put and let this settle, time may yet be on our side
Not convinced that chasing dollars is the end all the P2 make it out to be? At some point, how much money do you need? Is money really what is holding back our success in any sport? Is it really helping any school that isn't a well known entity already? Plenty of schools do well in certain sports without being in P2, UConn/Louisville in Basketball, UCF in football, etc.
I really wonder about all the un-intended consequences, and all the unforeseen ones of the P2.
USC/UCLA may well be hurting themselves in the long run. Nothing about this is for the 97% of kids playing Olympic sports, how will they react to having to travel insane distances to play, will they want to in the long run?
If it doesn't have integrity, then it is not sustainable, and I don't see a lot of integrity in what is happening. If the majority are disenfranchised, how is it sustainable? If Tech stops playing sports tomorrow, I pretty much stop watching all college sports.
If I was Whit, I would think long and hard before doing anything hasty. Maybe staying put, regardless of what happens with the ACC is still the best move.

if we dont offer bags of cash, we wont even get the P2 leftovers. they'll go to other schools who will offer $$$. I'm not saying I agree with that, but i think its true. i actually hate what this has done to college sports.

The Grant of Rights are pretty damn tight and it takes 10 votes to break it.
As long as 5 members stay together everyone stays, or each school can donate 100-150 million to leave.
This is so Big East again, and remember VT was kinda the same way (however, while they were leading the charge to stick together, they got the ACC bid and basically jumped.) I think VT is way smarter in any external statements of anything.
Dont, get me started on the super conferences, and the apparent selection criteria is only what ESPN wants to get their top media schools. (ie. reports USC does not want Oregon in the big 10, and its a big deal for them, (also to get ND, Big 10 might junk Washington or Oregon to get Stanford).... Also heard clemson is not really a lock in to the SEC (blocking by GA and SC). SO we see an exclusive playoff with only the two big conferences, they lock out previous participants such as clemson, Washington Oregon Cincinnati, and also with the playoff sites being the big bowls lock out all the other teams from Sugar, Fiesta, Rose, Orange and Atlanta. This is really so unprincipled. IT has nothing to do with fan base, support of the program or product on the field or even results. Sounds very anti trust.

all they had to do was to vote for the SEC expansion model. But the B1G used the ACC's and PAC's fear and hatred of the big bad SEC to blind them. The B1G played the ACC/PAC into signing on the The Alliance, meanwhile the B1G was plotting. Now thanks to that move, the ACC/PAC/Big12 have no guaranteed spot and who do you think has the best shot of getting (2) teams in? The SEC and the B1G - yea the same B1G who convinced the ACC/PAC to vote against expansion.
Yet people on this board convinced others that The Alliance was a good move for the ACC. Some posters/reads need to stop listening to people who tell you what you want to hear and hope to be true. Start thinking with your head.

...keep VT from joining whatever conference they end up in... I seem to recall we missed out on one bowl because UNC said they would not play us, so that bowl selected someone else as UNC opponent that year.

time in less than 24 hours someone has posted a different number on how many have to leave to break the GOR and so far WADR no one can post a link back it up. I am not saying you are not right, but can you link to back it up?

to leave will be way north of 100-150 million.
And don't leave fox out of this, they are just as guilty as ESPN now. While I hate finnebaum I think he is the one who said something to the effect of "this is coke vs pepsi and no one else matters".
you are right it is not fan-driven or performance-based. it is based on populariity and brand

keep the gap close and it is no where close today and will be gigantic in 2 years. There WILL BE a 6-team B1G West - so the travel will not be that much different than it is today for the PAC teams that join the BiG West. If VT sports go down the tube it will affect VT academics. I know that some dont want to believe that, but it will.

I tend to agree with you but...
how much 6 home football games and 10-12 conference men's basketball games are leading factors in attracting students is yet to be determined. Tech sports were way down on my list for wanting to attend Virginia Tech. Tech's academic standing is pretty much the same today than it was 30-40 years ago. College football and men's basketball are definitely good advertisement. I do think it's true that colleges get a bump in applications when they are doing well in football or basketball. What percentage of undergrads apply to attend Tech to watch six football games? IMHO, academics is more dependent on research dollars and funding (state, federal, endowments,...). than athletic dollars Tech is top 50 in research and development and about 40 in football the past decade. Tech just received its largest number of applications in 2021-2022. How much of an effect did a 6-7 football team have on that increase? UConn's academics have remained steady despite failing to enter the P-5. I hope Tech's academic reputation isn't dependent on Power 5 football or sports in general.

Tech is in much better standing than it was 30-40 years ago. Not 100% sure it is totally football related but it had an effect.
I will say my son goes to tech now and I am in a parent facebook group and there are constant posts about how students get tickets to games because they don't want to miss out. Maybe the performance of the team doesn't; matter so we could be ok if we aren't in a P2?

Tech has been ranked between 65-77 for 40 years.
Those academic rankings have been about the same for every college. Tech has been stuck in the low to mid 70's for a few decades with pretty much the same schools. In the early 80's, President Bill Lavery got the reasearch park going. He knew Tech's growth and prosperty depended on research and development. There was little building construction on campus when I attended Tech during that time (early to mid 80's). The focus was on the research park. The Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine was only a few years old. Undergraduate academics are pretty much the same today as they were 40-50 years ago, the research is what has improved or elevated Tech's national academic profile. Football, especially during the late 1990's and 2000's defintely increased Tech's popularity and brand. I'm surprised that Tech doesn't have a larger graduate enrollment. UNC's research and graduate school greatly improves their academic reputation. The same with schools like Pittsburgh, Michigan, Rutgers and Maryland.

WADR, saying money doesn’t matter, is putting your head in the ground. If UNC basketball suddenly paid their Coaching Staff half the amount of the top basketball teams, do you think over time they would stay on top?
Also, I love the non revenue sports, but they also will fade fast if the P2 can just come in and buy their top coaches for double. The LIV Golf is showing for the right money you can turn the PGA Tour on it’s head.
Sorry, none of us can afford to put our heads in the sand so that things can be like they used to be.

Folks that have no respect to VT or don't know anything about the program see a program in SWVA and perceive the student body (they think 10-15k ) all just from SW VA and no national programs and dont bring in any markets (they just look at the map).
Internally, in the ACC, UNC, and frankly tobacco road, really have had no respect to VT, (you know they know nothing about the DC market or care). They have been against VT since the southern conference, the formation of the ACC and hated when VT worked the political realm to force membership. Externally, some of the cursory marketing folks in the networks have the same opinion. They are basing this on perception not any analytics.
Peeling the onion, VT is the college media ratings leader for the DC Richmond and Hampton Roads market, with view shares, interest in the program. VT frankly is all over Northern VA and DC market and in some media analytics, actually draw more viewers than Maryland. VT has 30,000 members of he Hokie Club, and its pushing clemson in participation. VT is beginning to be a force in many ACC sports, (and dont you think ACC blue bloods hate that VT won in 'their exclusive basketball tourney). Also, UVA has no market presence in DC market and Hampton Roads, and barely in Richmond, but as long as they where their Mr. Jefferson brand they think it is all they need. UVA got play into the SEC because, SEC was talking to VT and UNC, and UNC basically advised, if you want us, we do not want to go in with VT, we can go with UVA and UVA can carry the state. (Who does UNC think they are Texas???) and SEC folks are not going to intimidated by UNC, who are rookies, hell they delt with Texas and Ok, who eat programs like UNC).
I respect your concerns, and I feel VT knows who are the snakes. but optimistically, I think VT is preparing for this.. When it was reported the AD meetings even before for the 3-5-5 meetings, Whit was very active (and Pissed), in the meeting. Knowing VT was getting screwed, - our 3 could have been either BC or Louisville instead of Wake). There is a reason why the ACC commissioner looked worn out after appearance on the ACC Huddle. Also, I think the sudden cancelling of the Packer Durham show is big. ESPN is stuck in the GOR contract as well. If they can starve the Network and ACC coverage, maybe they can force the ACC to renegotiate (and reopen the GOR) and boom the opportunity is opened for an ACC attack.
For VT, I think the 400 million campaign is going well, and should keep us stable. Also, VT I think is prepared, if they stay in the ACC through the term, to raise enough money to stay in the game. I think VT is prepared to 1) demand compliance to the GOR, and if folks leave, give us the damn check. (we did this the Big East and Metro and can be very crappy) 2) be prepared with resources to be flexible to pivot quickly- I think internally they have been working scenarios so decisions can be made quick. 3) VT is going to make decisions for what is the best VT - hell with UVA, hell with the ACC.
There got to be a legal issue, when 2 big conferences can automatically eliminate any options for Programs such as Washington oregon, Miami, Oklahoma State, the Big 12 and the ACC in a playoff, and limit access to bowl games as well.
thank you for allowing me to diatribe about this. The bottom line, is VT needs to win football games. and coach Pry has alot on his shoulders.

OU and Texas owned the Big 12
When they leave to be equals in the SEC, there is your sign.

Losing Texas is nothing more than squashing a Hornet before it stings. OU is the big loss.

It will not be either the B10 or SEC, but that's ok. I believe the B12 would be fine under those circumstances. IF the ACC is able to make sure it doesn't fall prey to either B10 or SEC, it would be able to play on the B12 level. I personally would be fine with that.

schools. The lower level schools in the SEC and BIG are improving recruiting, as they build better facilities that other conferences cannot compete with. Compare facilties at Arkansas, Purdue and Minn, to lesser facilities at USC and UCLA. Then you see why USC and UCLA are moving. You also see why USC and UCLA are not what they used to be.
