Agree, just curious as to what happens
when 5 years down the road the fans and donors finally catch on and say "Hey, why are we still in the ACC? We have been told this is no problem". Then again maybe they won't. Got some friends who are FSU fans and they are scary delusional right now.

Academics means little to nothing. It used to be used as an excuse
to not let schools into a conference or when the BIG wants to say they are better than the SEC. We aren't having academic competitions here and academics are not affecting the value of tv contracts.
If your school brings money to the conference, then you can get in. period.

I am guessing they won't at least not for football
Conferences will want the best two teams playing in the championship game for tv ratings and more money. Divisions could hinder that. Go look at the earlier Big 12 championship games, just for one example in like 2004, they had an unranked Colorado play Oklahoma. Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas Tech were by far the three best teams in the conference but all in the same division.
Yormak said they were staying with a no-division format last year with the four new additions, I doubt two more will change it.

I think the point is to have personalities to help sell
seems every month or so one SEC coach is talking trash or throwing shade to another through twitter or press conferences
What makes Colorado relevant right now? Certainly not the product but their coach. People want to see what he says next and other coaches are referring to him. How many days go by before you hear another Deion quote or some coach talking about him
When the season starts, people will be watching them. They are like a mini version of old-school. People will watch in hopes he succeeds and people will watch in hopes he fails. The point is people will watch.

Not the exit fee but
buying out the GoR. I bet they will be able to negotiate a lower settlement, just not for a long time. like may 2033-4
All this whining and moaning certainly won't endear them to the other members as we see already. If they are in fact stuck for a while this might actually work against them.
Conference Realignment Board

OH I can't
because it makes no sense. Like you said complaining to get your way may work for a child of weak parents, but that's not the case here.
I can't understand their end goal. If you can get out, then get out. If you can't, but keep coming up with mythical ways to do so just to give your fans the illusion you are trying, what happens a few years down the road when the fans finally catch on?

If they had a leg to stand on
I assume they would be using it to walk out of the confernce right now, not stick around and complain.
So many assumptions about them leaving/being able to leave, yet here they are stuck in the ACC
Conference Realignment Board

Interesting thought on Warchant.com
Jeff Cameron and Tom Lang brought up an interesting thought - basically, all the FSU "moves" that keep going public might be an attempt to negotiate a lower exit price.
Not sure I agree but it is a different angle.

Doubt the Big10 let USC tell them anything
More likely big 10 knows oregon and washington do not actually benefit them at "full price". Offer them a lower amount and see if they bite. If they do, it's probably good business, If they say no, wait to see if PAC12 will actually stay together. If schools leave the PAC12, oregon and wasington will have no choice but to take the big 10 "offer".
this has noting to do with usc, but with money.
Conference Realignment Board

So that "merger" is going to tell ESPN
what payout they want for each school? and force ND to join? That sounds plausible
do you really think Arizona and Arizona State have any value?
I personally can't wait to stay up until 3 am watching trashy pac 12 teams play

But its not just athletics
it is "reputation" and public image.
Not sure how long you have been around but VT has changed for the better in many respects since 2000. Athletics gets you more "well known" and then applications increase
Conference Realignment Board

I might throw in LSU there
but very true. That is the thing that gets lost in all this. Just getting more money isn't going to make purdue compete year in and year out with OSU michigan, because they are getting the same increase in money and are already a big name. So are we to assume a bunch of schools are just cool with getting a load of money and never actually caring to compete?

Or maybe FSU thinks complaining and pushing for unequal
sharing is the way to go. Pretty sure before their moves USC/UCLA were asking for it, as were Texas/Oklahoma. Perhaps FSU thinks this is the thing you have to do first to try and get what you want.
Of course the length of the GoR is a much bigger factor in FSU's attempt

Apparently some WVU fan has found the way for FSU to get out of the ACC!
The ACC seems to have committed fraud with respects to FSU :)

I would think ND would want the ACC to stay
It gives them a home for all their other sport. They get in the neighborhood of 11 mil from the ACC. If their next NBC contract does go as excepted (everyone seems to report they will get 60 mil a year from it), then they will be fine as an independent in football
Conference Realignment Board
3 y ago
Oh I agree completely
Just my FSU "friends" can't see how no conference would be that stupid and it would never be that easy.
They can't grasp the fact that they will have little to no money coming in to use on their program. Also if its true that football pays the bills, what would happen to their other sports.
It's funny because they keep telling me I am stupid for not "understanding" how easy it is for FSU to do this. yet they haven't done it) :)
Conference Realignment Board
3 y ago
Exactly, these big moves
tend to happen in secrecy without much fanfare.
I do think people overestimate the desire/need for BIG or SEC to expand more.
Honestly, I more see both the BIG and SEC saying one day (like the next TV contract), "Hey the ACC has unequal sharing, maybe we should do that. If you don't agree go find another conference". The greedy always get greedier.
Conference Realignment Board
3 y ago
They wouldn't
I make the assumption he meant that ESPN would renegotiate to NOT lose FSU
BTW if this is to put pressure on ESPN to renegotiate, I can't believe they will fall for it.

According to the article
it has been scheduled for weeks, not just a few days
And you are right, it appears it has been scheduled for weeks, not just a few days
Just fuel for the conspiracy
"While the timing is interesting â any school planning to leave the ACC in the next year would have to notify the conference in writing by Aug. 15 â this meeting's agenda focuses on budget approvals and has been in the works for weeks, according to the President's office The agenda for the meeting includes 2024-2025 Legislative Budget Request; 2023-24 Linking Industry to Nursing Education (LINE) Fund Proposals; Creation of Direct Support Organization; Seminole Boosters, Inc. Loan.
The published agenda doesn't include any items related to athletics.".

#2 doesn't seem logical to me
Because it would potentially cost a lot to join the distant 3rd place conference. I do not see it as worth it right now.

First thing he said seems to be false
FWIW Tallahassee Democrat says the board meeting has been planned for weeks, not just announced as Gene says. See link below

Apparently, the report is now that
FSU will pay 30 million a year over the length of the GoR, not sure how they do that unless the ACC agrees to give them their TV rights. And I can't belive the ACC would do that
Conference Realignment Board
4 y ago
They wouldn't
I don't think this situation is as dire as everyone (ie media) is making out to be. Buzzwords like this conference is on "life support" or "days are numbered".
how "mega" can these conferences actually get? how many schools are left that will make your 100 mill a year payout become 110 mill?
I believe there will still be a place for at least two other conferences. Another interestingI don't think this situation is as dire as everyone (ie media) is making out to be. Buzzwords like this conference is on "life support" or "days are numbered".

Probably yes.
obviously won't increase it to SEC/Big 10 levels but could get us more than current levels. maybe not add all the pac 12/10 but some
I am sure they have or are in the process of getting consultants to look at it and what will increase the value of the ACC the most.
Conference Realignment Board

Too many people are assuming they will go way beyond 16 schools.....
all the way up to 24. I have said this many times and it bears repating. Are we sure there are 16 teams left that if add t to a conference will actually increase the tv revenue enough to ensure the current members don't have to take a pay cut on their yearly payout?
And i will say t again, there is a reason oregon and washington have not been invited to the big 10. It makes no sense NOT to add members, no matter who you are "waiting for" if they bring every current member more money. there is no need towait and risk them going somewhere else to benefit that confernce.
I have a hard time seeing that.

No way its 8. has to be atleast 10.
Also you leave oregon and UW out of that scenario (and potentially stanford and cal). who is to say big 10 doesn't take some of them, ND and maybe unc/uva?
and no one is going to add a school unless it guarantees the yearly payout to each member goes up. not sure all those teams do that and not sure these power conferences need/want to get to 24
Conference Realignment Board

and if its 10 vote, they will never get i
syracuse, BC, pitt, louisville and whatever other teams don't get offered a new conference (because 10 teams from the ACC are not getting spots) will never vote for it

Whoever came up with that number has no real clue
that would be on the generous side to let teams leave considering their tv rights are about to go to 80-100 mill a year

first off....
ND is never going to go for that.
secondly adding some of those teams will definitely NOT increase the money per school
Every says the conferences are going to go to 24, but i am not sure tht i is viable, because as you add more teams you get to a point of diminishing returns. there simply aren't enough "name" teams to guarantee their addition gets everyone more money
and that could change our GoR so teams could leave. and if given the chance the would
Conference Realignment Board

If orgeon and UW are so vaulabe....
Why hasn't the BIg 10/Fox already added them? Why can't the big 10 just add notre dame and be done one day.
If they (oregon and uw) truly will bring on more money for every big 10 school right now, then there would not need to be a waiting period would there? All you do is risk this valuable asset goes somewhere else.
Mabe they are begin overvalued by everyone. They would have to bring in at least an extra 100 million EACH to make it worth adding them
It makes absolutely no business sense to not add teams that will make you money and no sense to add teams that will decrease each members payout.

The money is known. Big 10 and SEC are getting it. No one else is
Because no other combination of teams will be nearly as attractive.
Conference Realignment Board
4 y ago
Come on now.....
If you are just going on recent history maybe, but then with that argument neither can we.
Or guess it should be clemson and Pitt moving on based on the past few years.
FSU has won national titles. they carried the ACC for a long time. The are a big part of ACC football
And its not about being good right now, its about being a bigger brand. FSU is a big football brand stil
and i am not sure its about competing anymore.
Conference Realignment Board

Umm the SEC network is already in VA. so is the big 10 network
he also suggested the ACC add Rice......

Yep that's thats the key. it's not if you are good, it's if
people want to watch. the ACC needs to figure out a way to make more people want to watch. or add more teams that people want to watch (as long as they increase the value of your league)
Conference Realignment Board

Its not that they are just a bigger basketball brand. they
are a much bigger brand overall. yes, its d due largely to basketball and even more to MJ.
I have always been surprised that my friends who did not go to a school with a D1 football program are fans of UNC basketball AND football. Thye are fans of all the sports teams, not just basketball
UNC is a huge brand.
Conference Realignment Board
4 y ago
So then the ratings are determined by us playing bigger teams at good times
I completely agree that the ratings like this don't mean much because it is a function of the schedule times and who you play.
if thats the case, it should not be in the argument.because we can't prove people are watching to see VT play.
you don't have to like it but UNC is a bigger brand name than VT and that's what this about
Conference Realignment Board
4 y ago
did you look at the 2021 tv ratings?
I know 5 years of data is a bit i know 5 years of data is a big stronger than one year, but they had significant improvement while we sh!t the bed

Cincy and ND or cincy and memphis. basically ..
find the biggest states that are relatively close that do not currently have the ACC network.
and both have good basketball programs (ciny and memphis)
Conference Realignment Board

I agree with a lot of what you said
i have been arguing for days that a lot of these teams people mention (like VT for example) are not what conferences are looking for. I do believe skipper did allude to the fact that no one will just add teams to a conference if it makes each member's share go down.
Like you mentioned not all of these schools are as attractive as people think, if oregon and washington would make the big 10 richer why are they waiting? then get ND after they add them. Why exactly are they waiting for notre dame if they can make more addadding other schools? maybe its because these other schools do not bring the value people think they do. I think it comes from the perception that this is about creating better competition by adding "good" teams. it is about adding times that the avergae fan, not affiliated with the confernce wants to see play, whetehe they are good or not. I only see ND and UNC as that type of national brand right now. Maybe duke.
I do still see some value in adding states but only on one condition. I live in Virginia. I have the big 10 network and the SEC network. The only value I see to adding a state is if it is a state where my conference network doesn't already exist, that could cause cable companies to add that network to their service. while cable is declining, it is still a great deal for these networks. like I said, I have the big 10 network. i pay for it as part of my cable subscription whether i watch it or not. It may not be worth it 6-7 years from now, but right now these networks can make a lot of money by be inc included in cable services where they are currently absent.
And there is an addition that would help the ACC, but chances are they don't join for football because right now they do not have to
